Insiders' Guide: Portland, OR in Your Pocket: Your Guide to an Hour, a Day, or a Weekend in the City (Insiders' Guide Series) ReviewI had a free day in Portland after a business meeting, and thought this would be perfect for finding my way around town, especially with its pop-out maps. But this guide had me wandering lost in the streets of Portland.
The listings (attractions, restaurants, etc.) are OK although it's not clear how things were selected and the descriptions are short and only have street addresses, no directions or nearest MAX stops. The cover promises itineraries, but there aren't any to speak of.
But it's the maps that make this guide really awful. First, they don't have things you would expect a guide-book map to have. For example, some but not all of the MAX light rail lines are on the map, and those are all shown in the same color so it's impossible to tell which line is which. Even worse, the map is horribly inaccurate. I wanted to visit Powell's City of Books, so I followed the map to the intersection of 18th and Burnside. The problem is, Powell's is 8 blocks away at 10th and Burnside. Similarly, the map shows the International Rose Test Garden near Pettygrove Park, but it is really a couple miles away in Washington Park.
