Hitter of the Year ReviewMr. Ghivizanni, a Seattle criminal defense attorney, nailed the legal thriller with Employee of the Year, his first novel. Hitter of the Year, his second, takes the genre to a new level. This case begins when possibly reforming mobster Lolly Ruggiero's mother is killed by a hit and run driver. Ruggiero hires a private investigator who identifies the driver. Days later, the decapitated body of the driver is found in a canal. Ruggiero, the obvious suspect, swears he's innocent this time. Returning protagonist, defense lawyer Joe Bari and his streetwise private eye, Cammy Brown, come to believe him and set out to find the true killer.
The plot thickens immediately, but never slows down. There is non-stop action, twists the reader (at least this reader) couldn't predict, and perfectly nuanced wry humor in every chapter. Most definitely a thrilling, fun read. The novel's lasting impression, however, is created by the author's deep intelligence and insight about human behavior and personalities. Grief-riven survivor of a personal tragedy Joe Bari; flawed but stalwart Cammy; sweetly good yet steel-willed Rosa Rinaldi; and Ruggiero, the most unlikely lovesick swain; by the author's skill, all become not just characters in fiction, but memories of people as real as life.
