Roman Pompeii: Space and Society ReviewPOMPEII: SPACE AND SOCIETY is another book published recently to deal with the analysis of space in Pompeii. Drawing on the work of Andrew Wallace-Hadrill and others, Laurence then goes a step farther to subject Pompeii to a statistical analysis in order to determine such matters as "which part of town had the most brothels?" "Where did the gambling go on?" "Where were the cheap places to get drunk?" "Which streets had the most traffic?" Of course, there are problems with this approach. How does one identify a brothel? After all, they were probably not purpose-built, but adapted from existing buildings. Does finding dice at a particular location automatically make it a center of gambling? What exactly constitutes "decadent behavior"? Does finding pornography at a site always indicate prostitution? I certainly don't agree with all of Laurence's ideas, but the book is certainly stimulating and shows how interdisciplinary are the techniques of modern archaeology. If you've read some of the other recent books about Pompeii (Mary Beard, Andrew Wallace-Hadrill, Paul Zanker, etc.), your appreciation of this book will be enhanced. I think this is an important work of scholarship because it shows both the potential benefits and drawbacks of using statistics.Roman Pompeii: Space and Society Overview
