Food Lovers' Guide to Austin: Best Local Specialties, Markets, Recipes, Restaurants & Events (Food Lovers' Series) ReviewI live in Austin, I eat out a LOT and I love good food and fantastic cocktails. So those are my qualifications for reviewing this book. I read about the book on the author's blog (that I've followed for about a year) and other blogs including Austin360.com and rebeccamendations.com. I won a copy from rebeccamendations.com (full disclosure) and I picked this up to read about two hours ago and since then I haven't put it down except to go to the restaurants' websites (as listed in the book) to find more information. Here are some things I love:
- Crystal has done her homework! There are a TON of reviews in here and I can tell by her specific menu item reviews, mentions of "best times to go", special features of the restaurants, etc... she knows these restaurants. And I really like that the restaurants, locations and types of spots are so varied.
- The format of the book is accessible as is the size.
- Food Trailer info! As a wannabe of this area, I'm very excited to have a guide to some local faves. I see these trailers all over town but I've been too nervous to stop by (because I'm lame)... but now I have a couple I am going to visit soon!
- Restaurants are listed by area of town (including maps).
- Sample listings of menu items and cocktails... if she hadn't listed the cornbread stuffed trout at Moonshine Bar & Grill, I probably would have stopped reading!
- Recipes I wouldn't find anywhere else (you had me at "THE corn" from La Condesa... also known as THE corn from my favorite restaurant in NYC, "La Esquina")
- Website listings for Austin foodie news in the beginning of the book! I am always looking for new sites and blogs, I can't wait to check these out.
- I like that there are "shout outs" to local institutions who have been around for forever... way before Austin was a foodie destination! They deserve it!
- I felt like I was reminded of so many of my favorites (and I agreed with the reviews!) and introduced to many places I've never tried.
The only thing I might change is that I would have liked to see the maps listed by number instead of alphabetically so I could tell what the restaurant was at an intersection instead of having to hunt down the number... but that's so minor!
To Crystal... were ALL these restaurants started in Austin?! I looked in the intro, but couldn't tell. I feel like some are chains but may have been started here... i.e. Eddie V's, Perry's Steakhouse? I think Perry's might have been started in Houston? Maybe if they are chains and weren't started here (but we STILL love them), there could be some indicator? I know that ALMOST all (if not ALL) of these restaurants are local... and that's what makes this book so awesome! So if they aren't all local, I would love to know the difference so I can do some extra bragging about my local places.
Overall, a useful and comprehensive guide to our local hotspots. Annnnd.... now I'm hungry.
