Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York Review"Well, it was open last week, I went in and bought something" A familiar thought if you live in a city, large or small, across the Nation and discover that the store that had been there for decades is now closed: probably for good. James and Karla Murray have done us all a favor by capturing, for ever, the changing store front scene in New York. Amazingly, as mentioned in their introduction, almost a third of the stores in the book have closed!
The 220 photos (with some repeated in four huge fold-outs) cover the five boroughs with each getting a simplified street map and the relevant neighborhood indicated, some copy provides background to the name and how the area originated. What gives the book a lift though is the frequent addition of interviews with the storeowners who provide insights about the history of their premises and the products they sell.
All the photos are straight on shots of the store fronts but don't think for a minute that this might be sort of boring because these stores are a kaleidoscope of colorful window displays with products, notices and neon signs, awnings, and an amazing selection of lettering for their names, plus many of them desperately need some renovation and this adds texture to the surrounding building. Photos that are this content rich just don't need any gimmicks or trendy angle shots. The book's large size also adds to their impact (check out the Product Details).
This is a large, chunky, beautifully produced coffee table book (though a shame it wasn't printed with a finer screen than the 175 used). I wouldn't have thought that photos of store fronts would have yielded such a fascinating collection of stunning photos but here they are. A visual treat!

The Corrosion of Character: The Personal Consequences of Work in the New Capitalism ReviewAmidst the cacophony about the wonders of globalization and the new millennium's everlasting prosperity and bull market, Richard Sennett has the intellectual courage to present some of the negative consequences of global capitalism on a vast number of workers whose skills and dedication the economy and markets depend upon. Jobs are replaced by "projects" and "fields of work" and the moto for organizing working time is "no long-term". As workers are forced to go from one job to another, the new capitalism increases the risk of the workers in choosing employment, while it robs them of the sense of security enjoyed previously and, in Sennett's words, corrodes their character. The book covers the trends and nuances of the new capitalism and with many examples illustrates the decline of job security of both workers and managers, the fact that the fastest growing sector of the labor force is those working on temporary jobs, often called "permatemps", and that the frequent turnover in employment increases the risk of choosing a career or even a job. Murder Half-Baked ReviewThis novel was excellent in all sorts of ways. I love the characters as they span several generations and show them all to an excellent advantage. The sleuth is a woman in her forties that happens to be getting married to the local Chief of Police within a short time.
Ellen McKenzie has a delightful sense of humor and balance which serves her well in the unexpected and shocking situations she finds herself thrown into. Her groom, Dan Dunham is very human and also has a layer of sophistication that often cozy authors leave out.
Their friends and family are well represented as well.
The location is a small town in California, Santa Louisa. I sense I live near this fictional town but not exactly clear where it is. What fun. They have bakeries, which from my earliest childhood, are listed as my favorite stores to visit. Especially Italian bakeries. If I had any complaints it was not having any recipes included.
The mysteries were contemporary, action-filled, startling and pulled at my heart strings. You should read this book to find the other qualities which I haven't listed.
