Pantaloon (A Golden Classic) ReviewPantaloon, a black poodle, was on his bicycle racing toward the bakery. He licked his chops and tooted a few musical notes on his horn in anticipation of those "delicious baked-and iced things." Mmmmmm! Pantaloon just loved sweets. Baker, a big jolly man, was placing a "Help Wanted" sign in the window when Pantaloon was arriving. There was nothing better, except perhaps wanting to eat sweets, he could have wanted than to be a baker's helper. Baker would have none of it and quickly turned him away saying, "You look to me as if you'd eat more than you'd bake."
Pantaloon left the shop with his head down, but had an idea. Not long after he left a "very nice old lady in a big bonnet and a blue shawl" showed up at the bakery. She tippy toed on her red heels, swung her purse, and claimed to be a marvelous baker. Well, Baker soon figured out that disguise and Pantaloon was out the door. Next up was a haircut. Perhaps Baker could be fooled into letting him be a helper. On his way back, Baker accidentally tripped over Pantaloon's bicycle and injured himself. Who was going to do the baking? Was Baker ever going to let him be a helper after this fiasco?
This delightful, humorous tale about Pantaloon, a desperate wanna be baker, will simply charm the reader. I loved the determination of Pantaloon and could picture him wanting to help out the "Cake Boss." The nostalgic illustrations caught Pantaloons desire to be a helper, but also brought out the humor of the situation. The illustrations definitely have that 1950s Golden Book flair to them that will make the adult reader smile when they remember not only Pantaloon, but numerous other Golden Book characters.
