The Back in the Day Bakery Cookbook Review*Cheryl & Griffith Day!
The UPS guy looked stunned today when I rudely grabbed this cookbook from his hands! As I quickly shut the door I said, "Sorry! I've been waiting for this cookbook forever!" He replied, "Sure hope you like it." I am known in the nabe as 'The amazon lady.' USPS, UPS, FedEx, they all deliver amazon books to me on a weekly basis. This book was worth the wait.
Sadly, this born-and-raised Geechee (born in Savannah 70 yrs ago) lives in NYC and hasn't been home in almost 30 years. Therefore, I haven't been to any of Paula Deen's restaurants or the Day's wonderful Back In The Day Bakery. After ripping it out of the box and thumbing through the pages, I was ready to pick up the phone and book a one way ticket back home just to visit their store!
Although the adorable couple are not from Savannah (not even the South!) they so fit in with what is so special about the town. Quirky, eccentric, unique, colorful and wonderful folks live down there. And they all love good food!
The cookbook has 247 pages of fab, fun recipes, and is beautifully photographed. Photos of the bakery bring a tear to my eyes because I remember Savannah way back when with the screen doors of the small stores had Merita Bread stenciled on the front. Back In The Day Bakery evokes these happy memories.
How blessed Savannah is that this couple decided to touch down there and open a bakery that creates such fun pastries. Love Peach Cobbler? How about some Peach Cobbler Muffins (yay) for breakfast! Make sure you order some Georgia Peaches (and Pecans) from Pearson Farms catalog this year! The best.
The cookbook (an instant classic, by the way) is divided into: Breakfast, Coffee Cakes, Quick Breads & Sweet Yeast Breads. Cupcakes & Cakes. Pies, Cobblers, Crisps & Tarts. Puddings & Custards. Cookies. Brownies & Bars. Confections and Savories. Whew! 100 recipes, all winners! If this book doesn't win the James Beard Best Cookbook Award for 2012 somebody is asleep at the wheel!
How about some Creole Brownies tonight as you're watching a movie on-line? Or some Rustic Cheddar Pecan Rounds and a glass of Chardonay as you thumb through your personal copy of Back In The Day Cookbook! Sneak some Brown Sugar Fudge into your backpack to give you an energy boost mid-day. Bring a thermos of White Bean Soup with Bacon to work one day. This book has it all!
The Lavender Shortbread cookies will be the first item I bake. I have a jar of baking Lavender in the pantry that is just dying to be made into a cookie! If you can't find it in your city, Amazon.Com has some sellers who will be happy to send you some.
Cheryl tells a sweet little story about how she sold Girl Scout Cookies on the back lot of the Desilu Studios when she was a young girl. Her dad worked there. As a homage to the wonderful GS Mint Cookies, she has created her own recipe for Chocolate Mint Cookies that look so delish I licked the photograph! Of course you know the founder of the American Girl Scout's was born and raised in Savannah. Juliet Gordon Low. But you knew that, right? Why not make a batch and wander over to Ms. Low's homes and take a tour.
There are breads and jams and soups and nuts and banana recipes and cakes and candies, oh, my! One more wonderful than the next.
What are you doing sitting here reading this review? You should be ordering this adorable book from amazon right now! When it arrives you will agree with me it is a page out of your childhood regardless of where you were born and raised. Thank you Cheryl and Griffith Day for making my day! Actually my year! It will take me that long to make every recipe in the book! The only problem is, where do I begin? Hearty congratulations! I just hope someday I can meet you in person. I miss Savannah a lot. Now I have an excuse to come back home! The Back in the Day Bakery Cookbook Overview
