The Bialy Eaters: The Story of a Bread and a Lost World ReviewMimi Sheraton was fascinated by French Toast in Paris, Turkish Delight in Istanbul, Danish pastry in Copenhagen, Scotch Salmon in Glasgow, and Parma Ham in Parma. So why not hunt for the elusive Bialy in Bialystok? I am a Kossar's Bialy (Grand Street at Essex in NYC) afficionado, so I approached this book with a chip on my shoulder. But Mimi knows her stuff. She even studied the art of bialy making at Kossar's (she includes a Kossar based recipe in the book). Mimi Sheraton (formerly with The New York Times) took off on an adventure to Bialystok (which was once the home of 50,000 Jews), packing some bialys (bailystoker kuchen) for the trip with her husband, Dick Falcone. Her COBD, or Compulsive Obsessive Bialy Disorder, originated after a 1992 sidetrip from her Conde Nast Traveler assignment on Polish foods. After placing an ad seeking stories in the Bialystok Shtimme Yiddish newspaper, she sorts through the stories, and then visits Israel, Australia, Argentina, Paris, Lincolnwood, Scottsdale (jalapeno flavored), and NYC's Lower East Side over seven years, and creates this history (herstory) of the bialy and the community that is now lost. By the way, did you know that Bell Bialy of Canarsie Brooklyn ships 96,000 bagels and bialies to Japan's Hokushin Corp. each month (where they sell for over $1.10 each)? Or that bialy's should never be sliced like a bagel? Or that Jews created a settlement in Bialystok officially in 1558 and were granted citizenship in 1745. This is a fun read. Now if someone would just tell me the difference between those who say kugel and those who say kiegel. The Bialy Eaters: The Story of a Bread and a Lost World Overview

Making Miniature Food and Market Stalls ReviewI have many books for polymer clay, but Angie's techniques are among the best I've seen. Her instruction for caning was so well described that I created perfect lemons, oranges, and limes the first time, and all in one evening. She gave me so much confidence that I decided to try a more difficult project. I made the cutest crab tonight. I can't wait to do the other projects in this book. Angie's fish are without a doubt the most realistic I have seen anywhere; so, with the confidence she's given me, I plan to attempt one of these in the very near future. If you are interested in milafiori, I highly recommend this book. After you have completed her projects, you should have developed a working knowledge of this process. I hope that she writes other books. I also suggest that you look at her instructional videos. They are extremely helpful.Making Miniature Food and Market Stalls Overview

Food Lovers' Guide to Atlanta: The Best Restaurants, Markets & Local Culinary Offerings (Food Lovers' Series) ReviewI originally bought this book because I know Malika. I brought it into work because my team is mostly from out of town, and they go back to this little book of goodness every Friday to help them make plans for the weekend. Thanks, Malika, for compiling this jewel. When does your next edition come out?!Food Lovers' Guide to Atlanta: The Best Restaurants, Markets & Local Culinary Offerings (Food Lovers' Series) Overview

Food Lovers' Guide to Maine: Best Local Specialties, Markets, Recipes, Restaurants & Events (Food Lovers' Series) ReviewJust like a good chowder, this book is filled to bursting with not only quintessential lobster shacks, but also fine dining, coastal brewpubs, bakeries, coffeeshops, food festivals, ice cream shops (even warrants its own section!), farmers markets and tips on finding donuts (who knew they were invented by a Maine sea captain in 1847?), fiddleheads, whoopie pies and the best farmstands. No oyster shell (there is a whole guide to Maine oysters) is left unturned in this book. The addition of Maine recipes, including one for fresh blueberry pie, is a delicious touch. Unlike many travel guidebooks, which barely update restaurant listings, this book gives its full attention to finding the best that Maine has to offer. It's also more readable than most guidebooks. And all this info is neatly packed into a book that will fit easily into a purse or bag for a trip exploring the culinary delights of Maine. Highest recommendation.Food Lovers' Guide to Maine: Best Local Specialties, Markets, Recipes, Restaurants & Events (Food Lovers' Series) Overview

Clotilde's Edible Adventures in Paris ReviewThis guide is just perfect for a foodie. Clotilde not only provides suggestions for all types of restaurants, she goes even further to give information on every food-related aspect of a vacation in Paris. With this book we will now be able to shop the best farmers' markets we otherwise might have missed. We're looking forward to experiencing the different neighborhood streets and markets, each with their distinct characteristics. We also now know the very best bakeries and shops for chocolate, pastries, candy, ice cream, spices, cheese, specialty food items, cured meats, prepared foods, fish, gourmet products, tea, coffee, wine, books, cookware, tableware, and even food shows. There are also great tips on French phrases and customs that will allow us to enjoy our trip to the fullest. This is the only guide of its kind.
Although comprehensive, I only wish there was more. However, that would probably just require additional and lesser suggestions. If we asked a friend for recommendations, this is just the guide we would want. Unlike most guides, there is not a long list of lackluster destinations taking up space with descriptions of why they are not recommended. Only recommended spots are listed, which is all we really need and allows the book to be a good size and easily referenced.
Clotilde boils down the city to its essence, providing only the best information in a well-organized format. The book is a good size to carry around. There is also more content on Clotilde's blog. We can't wait to put all of this information to good use in a few months when we're in Paris!Clotilde's Edible Adventures in Paris Overview
