They are manageable and organized by neighborhood, as well as by day of the week. This is especially useful, since shops, museums, etc. may be closed on odd days. The Food Lover's Guide to Seattle ReviewYes, I know of no other book guide to Seattle's ethnic food culture. Considering how important a food town this is, it's really a shame this book wasn't written sooner. But, it's here & it's very good. I agree w. almost all of Ms. Calcott's food recommendations.
My quarrels are w. what is left out. What happened to ethnic restaurants?? I know there are many of them & it would've added to the size of the book & the time it took to research it. But a food guide that leaves out restaurants has left out something very important.

The Slow Food Guide to San Francisco And the Bay Area: Restaurants, Markets, Bars (Slow Food Guides) ReviewLet me start off by saying that the New York edition of the Slow Food Guide is superb. It's like the notebook of a few exceptionally informed diners, sharing their best spots. The New York Guide even bested the highly-esteemed Michelin Guide to New York Restaurants, released the same year to much fanfare.
After moving to San Francisco, I immediately sought the SF edition to lean the culinary landscape of my new home. My first experience with the book was not so good though. A dim-sum restaurant marked inexpensive (dim-sum is usually cheap!) turned out to be very expensive. My friends were upset. I was upset. I'm not sure if this was because of a typo or just bad research.
One mistake is forgivable, but the subsequent recommendations I followed didn't fare much better. Some picks were just lackluster and some were less exciting than restaurants I had found on my own.
So it was time to start leaning on my foodie friends to show me the best eats in town. When I started finding really exciting places, just out of curiosity, I checked to see if they were in the guide. Had I missed them before? Nope. They're just not mentioned. After a while I quit consulting the guide and have relied on word of mouth since.
To summarize:
1. Sketchy research
2. Bland restaurants
So ultimately, I'm confused. I don't know how Slow Food could produce such a good guide for New York City and such a poor one for San Francisco.The Slow Food Guide to San Francisco And the Bay Area: Restaurants, Markets, Bars (Slow Food Guides) Overview

Frommer's Seattle 2010 (Frommer's Complete Guides) ReviewThis Frommers book was my top choice after reviewing other travel books. It was spot on. I carried it with me in Seattle and tabbed the pages for fast reference.
The maps and helpful hints enabled me to save time and see and do more. I would look at it over a coffee and map out my next couple hours and then use it again at the next coffee break. There are plenty of coffee shops in Seattle and the book made finding the best ones easy. Also, it helped me to locate super great inn. It also helped me to learn the public transportation system and thanks to the book, I got an advance ORCA pass for senior rates as the book led me to investigate the on line King County Metro system.
Was very helpful for locating ferries too. Kept it for my next trip.Frommer's Seattle 2010 (Frommer's Complete Guides) Overview

The Chowhound's Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area ReviewWhether you are a tourist who wants to eat like the locals or a Bay Area native, this book has the most compact yet comprehensive list of ideas for delicious dining in a unique, humorous and easy-to-read format.
As a long time Bay Area resident, I found myself using it immediately
Things I love about the book
-It's lightweight, so I can carry it my purse
-There are tips about places I frequent that I didn't know about
-Great cross indexing. It's very easy to use.
-It doesn't have the same tired general knowledge tips
-Really amazing that not only is SF and immediate areas covered, but that the entire Bay Area is nicely represented.
It also captures the essence of Chowhound of having fun while finding something wonderful to eat.

Clotilde not only provides suggestions for all types of restaurants, she goes even further to give information on every food-related aspect of a vacation in Paris. With this book we will now be able to shop the best farmers' markets we otherwise might have missed. We're looking forward to experiencing the different neighborhood streets and markets, each with their distinct characteristics. We also now know the very best bakeries and shops for chocolate, pastries, candy, ice cream, spices, cheese, specialty food items, cured meats, prepared foods, fish, gourmet products, tea, coffee, wine, books, cookware, tableware, and even food shows. There are also great tips on French phrases and customs that will allow us to enjoy our trip to the fullest. This is the only guide of its kind.
Although comprehensive, I only wish there was more. However, that would probably just require additional and lesser suggestions. If we asked a friend for recommendations, this is just the guide we would want. Unlike most guides, there is not a long list of lackluster destinations taking up space with descriptions of why they are not recommended. Only recommended spots are listed, which is all we really need and allows the book to be a good size and easily referenced.
Clotilde boils down the city to its essence, providing only the best information in a well-organized format. The book is a good size to carry around. There is also more content on Clotilde's blog. Food Sake Tokyo (The Terroir Guides) ReviewI feel so fortunate to have stumbled upon this book before my very last-minute, first-ever trip to Tokyo and Kyoto.
As a culinary professional - I am always compelled to seek and sample the best food a country has to offer. I knew Japan would be challenging, given my time constraints and the overwhelming number of choices in such large cities, and especially because of its famously rich and sundry culinary traditions. I couldn't waste the limited time I had there on searching out the best soba noodles, the crispiest tempura, or the perfect sushi (there were gardens, museums and temples to see, too!). I had just several hours in Kyoto's Nishiki Market - not the several trips I would've preferred to have made, had I several more days in Kyoto. Still, I was intent on making the right choices...
Enter Food Sake Tokyo - carefully and conscientiously researched by someone who clearly possesses real knowledge and discerning taste, and whom, gratefully, saved me from the useless and practically non-existent recommendations from the (almost-as-useless-otherwise) guidebooks I'd purchased.
Thanks to this guide, I tasted the most perfect (not to mention atmospheric) plate of Soba noodles. I sampled the crispy/tender delights of a properly-prepared tonkatsu. And I was experiencing sensory overload at Tsukiji Market (on a very cold, rainy, jet-lagged morning) when I sat down to not one (the donburi at Nakaya), but two (the fried anago filets at Tenfusa) memorable breakfasts.
Then there were things like the hit-the-spot soy doughnuts in Kyoto! After the first couple of successes, I felt comfortable giving up "the search" for this or that, and just following the author's lead.
I also really appreciated the way this book has chapters which include suggestions about shopping and food items to purchase and bring home, and categories that include cheap-eats and market guides.

Vegetarian Paris 2008 proved to be a very accurate, invaluable aid. It provides very accurate descriptions of the vegetarian restaurants in Paris, listed by arrondissment, with Metro stop information, restaurant websites (where they exist), description of their cuisine, and hours of operation. Don't leave for Paris without it.
I only recently became aware that there's a 2009 edition. Search Amazon for 'Vegetarian Paris' and look for the book with a 2009 publishing date. Boulangerie: A Pocket Guide to Paris's Famous Bakeries ReviewThis book is a jewel. It made our first Paris trip that much more special by introducing us to some exceptionally fine bakeries. This pocket-sized book not only gives you a listing of the fine Boulangeries (organized by arrondisements, includes the address & phone number, closest metro or bus stop, when they are open, and what's special about each) but tells you where to go (nearby picnic spots) and eat the bread and goodies that you buy at these Boulangeries -- this is what truly made the book special. We tried "Robineau" in the 7th and "Gerard Beufort" in the 5th as listed in this book and we were not disappointed. Both had wonderful baked goods, the former within a short walk to the Champ de Mars and Eiffel, and the latter, a 3-minute walk away from Arenes de Lutece, the ancient Roman amphitheater which is a perfect picnic spot.
