Sweet Trouble (Bakery Sisters) ReviewI'll admit that I haven't read the other books in the series, so I might have been missing out on some of this story. But maybe not, because the reason I didn't like this story is that I found the characters so unlikeable.
The heroine wasn't too bad, but really, who ends up in bed with their sister's man? Even if, like she claims, "nothing happened", why would you be in that situation if things are totally innocent? And yes, kissing is cheating--you don't have to actually have sex with someone for it to "count".
And the hero! I hardly know where to start with him. He is unjustifiably angry at the heroine, and his reasons didn't hold water. He claimed that she should have let him know she was having his kid. Umm...hello? She did! She told him she was pregnant, she told him it was his, she even offered to submit to a DNA test to prove it, but he would have none of it. He refused to even consider the posibility that it was his child. What was she supposed to do, hold a gun to his head and force him to be a part of his son's life?
The hero decides he's been done wrong (although how he gets there I'll never understand), and decides to get revenge on the hero by destroying her life and suing for custody. When his lawyer tells him that such action means he might end up having to take care of the kid, he replies that "that's what nannies and boarding schools are for." What a heartless pig! Children are not meant to be used as pawns in adult power struggles. Ripping an innocent child away from a loving mother (and the only parent he's ever known) and them abandoning him to be raised by strangers just to satisfy a petty need for revenge is just plain wrong!
I couldn't stand the hero's "poor pity me" attitude. He's the one who refused to take responsibility for his child. He made his own mess. This is not the way a hero is supposed to act. I spent the whole book wanting to punch him in the nose.
I've enjoyed books by Susan Mallery before, but I recommend skipping this one.Sweet Trouble (Bakery Sisters) Overview

Sweet Spot (Bakery Sisters) ReviewNicole is bummed that she's in the middle of a divorce, not speaking to her youngest sister, and everyone around her (including a stray dog) seems to be pregnant. One morning a teen comes into her bakery and attempts to steal donuts. She calls the cops but instead sexy football coach Eric "Hawk" Hawkins shows up. Brash Nicole wants nothing to do with the smooth charmer, but agrees to let Raoul work off the donuts at her store. Raoul soon proves to be an invaluable asset and she gives him a full time job, and soon he moves in with her when she discovers his foster family has kicked him out. Meanwhile everyone seems to be taking pity on her single status, so she opts to make a bargain with Hawk to pretend to be her lover in exchange for, well the fringe benefits of being a lover. Widowed Hawk never even considers that he might actually fall for the often prickly baker. And then there is his impetuous princess of a daughter...
Mallery's second installment in the Bakery sisters trilogy is a bit disappointing. Nicole is absolutely obnoxious throughout 95% of the first novel, and pretty much half of this one, so I had a hard time actually liking or caring what happened to her character. I did like that Raoul brought out the softer side of her, but disliked the way that she treated just about everyone else around her. And what about her supposed BFF, Wyatt - he was completely MIA in this novel.
POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT: I really hate the trite plot device that some authors resort to in order to get a couple together - the dreaded unexpected pregnancy. Really, can't they find a better way to bring a couple together? Use a little creativity. This novel could have been so much better had Mallery not resorted to impregnating all three of the Keyes sisters in order to get their respective men (well, don't know for sure about baby sis Jesse since she is in the next book, but my money's on it). She has realistic dialog, pretty good secondary characters, and a heroine who (finally) grows. It could have been a pretty good story; instead, it's just pretty average.

Sweet Talk (Bakery Sisters) ReviewClaire, a concert pianist on tour since the age of 6, comes home at the request of sister Jesse to take care of third sister Nicole (Claire's fraternal twin) who needs an operation and somebody to care for her during recovery. Nicole hasn't spoken or had contact with Claire for 20 years because she blames Claire for ruining her life (blames Claire for their Mothers' death) - won't take calls, answer mail - invite Claire to her wedding(she is currently separated from husband Drew). Nicole is also not speaking to sister Jesse and plans to never forgive her for a mistake that Jesse recently made, on top of inviting Claire to come and care for Nicole. Wyatt, Nicole's good friend, but no sexual chemistry with Nicole, is a single father who vows never to have another "relationship" with a woman other than casual sex. Nicole has filled Wyatt's head with hateful descriptions of Claire for years, so Wyatt has an immediate dislike for Claire when she arrives to care for Nicole and try to mend the familial fences. Claire and Wyatt are the love interests.
There was absolutely no "Sweet Talk" in this latest offering by Susan Mallery. While I have loved all of her previous books, this one offered chapter after chapter of of one sister declaring "you ruined my life" louder than the next. These characters are so very immature, shallow and thoroughly dislikable that you don't care for them even after they get together. I kept hoping that the sisters would open their eyes, grow up and start acting like adults, unfortunately, that didn't happen. The dysfunction of this family is front and center from individual issues through relationship issues. There wasn't even any good romance with only two very short sexual encounters between Claire and Wyatt. The rest of the book was hashing and re-hashing, but not dealing with, the "you ruined my life" themes. This was not a fun read.Sweet Talk (Bakery Sisters) Overview
