The Bachelor Preferred Pastry (Zebra Contemporary Romance) ReviewI enjoyed this book. However, I was not blown away and I could put it down, and did on several occasions. It never sucked me in like a great book should. I enjoyed the story, and enjoyed the characters. I bought the book mainly because it takes place in Boston and I'm a sucker for books set in Boston. That being said, here is my opinion of The Bachelor Preferred Pastry.
First, let me say it was well-written. The characters had distinctive voices and were well developed. The Hero (Daniel) and the Heroine (Olivia) had a moderate amount of chemistry, but nothing that was setting the pages on fire. My favorite character had to be Olivia's sister Josie, and I would read a book about her and Jake. The story also moved quickly and everything seemed necessary.
However, Ms. Jump lost me near the end when it was revealed that Olivia didn't do the baking (I had always assumed it was Josie and didn't realize that Olivia was trying to pass herself off as the baker rather than business owner.) and that it was really Josie. I never saw this as a personal revelation because she stuck with running Pastries with Panache at the end because her love was running a business rather than baking? But she was never baking? The whole thing felt to me like someone told the author Olivia needed to experience Personal Growth and this was it.
On that same note, Daniel was astoundingly one dimensional and I could never warm up to him like I should have. For 3/4 of the book, all Daniel talked about was how he was so spoiled with his wealth and lack of job. I liked how he had to go out and try to make on his own, and WANTED to make it on his own. I also liked how he admired Olivia for these same traits. However, about 50 pages til the end, it is suddenly revealed that Daniel was adopted and his butler, was his father. AND HE WAS OKAY WITH THIS.
It was like, oh, how nice I'm the son of the butler. That whole part ruined the book for me and felt very, very, tacked on and I'm not sure what it had to do with anything. If it had to be a part of the storyline, it could have been brought up near the begining and have been the catalyst for Daniel going out into the world to make it on his own; to come to terms with his new identity. Talk Nerdy to Me ReviewThis book is such a riot. It is the first Nerd book that I've read, and I immediately went out and bought all the others. So far I've read Nerds like it Hot, and My Nerdy Valentine, and this one is still the funniest.
This author writes with so much humor, that you are almost laughing at every page. The secondary characters are funny. In this case, there is a kinky neighbor, who tells people she was abducted by an alien and learned other-wordly sexual techniques. At the same time all the characters are 'normal' in the sense that they have normal human faults and insecurities. That's part of what makes the series so enjoyable - the very humanness of the characters.
The premise of the story is that there is this beautiful model, who is also a genius at aerodynamics, who gets into a little bit of trouble with her advanced design on a hovercraft. The dichotomy between her being so gorgeous, and so nerdy at the same time was wonderful. Highly recommended. I've never laughed so much reading a romance novel.Talk Nerdy to Me Overview

The Icing on the Cake (True Vows) Review"The Icing on the Cake" is the delightfully romantic new novel from Alison Kent. I adore Alison Kent's novels. They're fun, flirty, sincere and oh-so-romantic. When I read that Alison was actually writing the first reality-based romance novel, I was intrigued, but not necessarily in a good way. I don't really care for reality TV and knowing that the characters I was reading about are actual people? Not my first choice in a novel, but I had faith in Alison's writing so in I went... And there I stayed. Each chapter starts with one of the cupcake descriptions that Michelle and Todd actually use in their cupcakery. Delicious, tantalizing names and flavors met me with each turn in the story. Oh, how I wished I lived in Washington, D.C. rather than Central Ohio! But Todd's from Central Ohio and it was a treat seeing my hometown featured during several scenes. Details like that drew me in and kept me reading.
Honestly, it took me a lot longer to finish the book than I expected. I'm a voracious reader and while Alison's writing and the story progression kept me hooked, real life (I'm mom to three kids, six and under) got in the way. I realized that if it weren't for Alison's fantastic writing, I would still be working my way through the book instead of hiding under the covers with a flashlight at night so I don't wake anyone up. But flashlight in hand, I loved reading this sweet romance.
And the "eh" feeling about reading a story based on real people? Gone. Every romance has a Happily Ever After ending and it was a pleasure to read about how two regular people can find an extraordinary connection that's real. Like FOR REAL. Not all Happily Ever Afters start with flashes and bangs and loud choruses of angels announcing the Fall In Love moment. Many start - and stay - just as Michelle and Todd started their story... with friendship, taking a chance, and seeing where life leads.
The only thing that would make this book better would be to have one of Michelle and Todd's cupcakes included. :)The Icing on the Cake (True Vows) Overview

Ethan is going to try shale oil. He wants to be the first in some years in this family to be an old fashioned oil tycoon. He has an assistant, Lizzie Landry, who takes care of both his business and his personal lives well too. She wants to stay in Midland TX and open a bakery--it's been her dream to create the bakery her parents had. She had a wonderful life with her parents in the bakery. Her parents, mother was a french woman and great baker, are gone and she hopes to create that special feeling again. She plans to stay in Midland while Ethan goes to Montana to have his dream too.
Lizzie has worked for Ethan for 5 years now and made his life the best. She even takes care of his lovers who stay overnight with him. She's been telling Ethan of her plans for some time now but he talks her into going to Thunder Creek with him but she gives him a time limit then she's returning to Midland.
When Lizzie & Ethan arrive in Thunder Creek she's got a nice home leased for them with all the particles taken care of--Ethan doesn't have a thing to worry about but business! They've also got a wedding to go to! Ethan's brother is marrying a local woman and settling in Thunder Creek. The local bakery is going to bake the wedding cake but it seems the owner has left town with the money for a cake and only 1 week before the wedding. Lizzie comes to the rescue by baking the cake. She's always been part of the Traub family get-together's and here in Montana she's also getting close to many of the locals.
Lizzie has always loved Ethan but never thought of herself as his girlfriend material. This move has made both aware of each other in that special way. The Next Best Thing (Hqn) ReviewI have a love-hate relationship with Kristan Higgins. I've read them all, and I'm sure I'll continue to read anything she writes in the future. But. There's always a "but," different for each book. The last one, "Too Good to be True," was definitely her best so far, so I had high hopes for "The Next Best Thing." And it does have a lot going for it. For one thing, I couldn't put it down. I read it in a day. The characters are compelling, and the idea of getting over a marriage that seemed perfect is heartwrenching. But. :-)
The quick summary: Lucy's marriage to Jimmy, the love her of her life, ended after just eight months when he was killed in a car accident. Five years later, when her sister has a baby, she decides she's ready to re-enter the dating scene because she wants children of her own. This involves breaking off her "friends with benefits" arrangement with Ethan, Jimmy's brother, who has been her rock and best friend for years. I confess I've never suffered through the death of a husband, so maybe I'm not the best judge here, but Lucy's utter devotion to her dead spouse FIVE YEARS LATER seemed overdone to me. I could completely sympathize with her reluctance to begin dating again, and her inability to visit his grave rang true. But two-thirds of the way through the book, she is still breaking down into broken-hearted sobs on almost a daily basis. She is unable to have the simplest experience with another man without comparing it to the wonder that was her marriage with Jimmy. She still watches their wedding video so often that she leaves it in the DVD player. She just seemed pathetic to me. I skimmed through about a third of the book, partly because it didn't seem believable, but mainly because I felt so sorry for Ethan.
And as others have said, it's hard to understand Ethan, anyway, because he never really gets to have his say. He's a very likable, nice guy, and I thought it was a nice change for a romantic hero that he wasn't drop-dead gorgeous, just a nice looking guy. But as far as we know, other than a two-month affair with Parker (who ends up being Lucy's best friend), he hasn't ever had another girlfriend in the eight or so years he's known Lucy. Which seemed a little unbelievable. And what was the deal with the whole town letting her win her softball games because they felt sorry for her? Sure, the season after Jimmy's death, that would be sweet. But five years later, it's insulting. The more I thought about all the little details after I put the book down, the less sense I could make of it.
It does have a good ending. Lucy finally learns to be a little more realistic about her first marriage and comes to truly value Ethan. But the whole thing would have worked better for me if it had been three years since Jimmy's death instead of five. Or if it needed to be five years, if Lucy wasn't still so hung up on him. It's a great read if you're spending a day on airplanes and in airports, but not much more than that. In fact, if you haven't read "Too good to be True," just skip this one and read that instead.The Next Best Thing (Hqn) Overview

Second Chance at the Sugar Shack: A Sugar Shack Novel ReviewShe'd just go back for her mother's funeral and then return to her fashion job. After all, she had no need to stay there and no time to do so.
Ms. Terry makes her main female character, Katie, a strong young woman who will do whatever she needs to succeed in the fashion world. Her mother didn't think it was possible, so Katie left town ten years ago and never went back. The author adds her mother as a ghost, which is very interesting way of solving past differences. While this is all fantasy, it does sound like a conversation that should have taken place in real life. And her mom is a great character; who else appears in her old Buick with Tom Jones playing on the radio?
Besides the family issue, Katie learns her boyfriend from high school still has interest in her. He's a local cop running for sheriff and a hunk besides, but her life in the glitzy fashion world of Los Angeles is where she loves living now. Ms. Terry has given both of her main love interests a chip on their shoulders, and they are doing their best to keep it there and not get hurt anymore.
The story is well paced and the author easily gets you emotionally involved in her characters. (I wanted to pick Katie up and shake her!) I really enjoyed her mother's ghost giving her advice. Whenever Katie got huffy about it, Mom's ghost faded out. Now if we could just do that in real life...
I kept turning pages through this read because I was anxious to find out how Ms. Terry resolved the issues between the two lovers. The sex between them was incredible, but could they merge their visions of the future?
Why not buy yourself a copy and see? And, there are two more stories coming out in this series about her brother and sister. I bet Mom has some advice for them, too! For a fun, sexy read you should grab a copy of Second Chance at the Sugar Shack.

Meanwhile someone wants to hurt Sophie who has no idea who or why. Rafe vows to keep her safe as he and his daughter have fallen in love with his sister's BFF.
The lead couple is a nice pairing whose issues are external and mostly due to family problems. The strong cast anchors the small town location and many residents play matchmaker involving Sophie and Rafe so they can see how they really feel about one another. Although the villain is over the top of Mt. Rainer and his daughter goes from confused tweener to mature adult, readers will enjoy Sophie's choice to come home to start over.

By Bread Alone ReviewNew Zealand author Sarah-Kate Lynch has come up with a quirky, original, touching charmer of a book about an English wife and mother who is anything but ordinary.
Esme Stack makes sourdough bread every day of her life, and its texture, aroma and "ambience," if you will, measures out her days. But when the book opens, Esme cannot bring herself to bake her bread, something she has been doing for decades. Her husband Pog (Hugo) is worried sick; her irrascible and nasty father-in-law Henry is secretly worried, and her divinely unique 4-year-old son Rory is not right at all.
As the story unfolds in delightfully fey meetings between Esme and her deceased Grandmother (you have to read it to believe it) and in flashbacks to the past, it gradually becomes clear that Esme and Pog have had a great tragedy: one that is barking at the heels of Esme's sanity. But what? On the outside, Esme is a ferociously organized housewife, baker, artist, nurturer of sick and lame animals (the bits about the donkey are hilarious). We know she once had a career, but not why she left it. We know she is holding something terrible at bay, but not what it is.
The gradual breaking of Esme's shell of protection is heartbreaking in its intensity and almost joyous in its resurrection of her soul.
This is simply a fabulous book. I am looking forward to reading "Blessed Are the Cheesemakers," by the same author! What a find!By Bread Alone Overview

Seriously Serendipity (A Holiday Romantic Comedy) (Christmas in Miller's Village) ReviewSanta Claus has come to town, and he's moving in on Camille's grandma. He's also brought along his grandson, and once he and Camille meet sparks fly. Not an issue if they weren't ultimately made to work together to save Santa's bakery.
There's lots of slapstick, lots of snark, and lots of funny. I'll just say I agree with others here and say it's cute. Go girl power.
That being said, I'm a huge fan of Shopaholic and Bitter is the New Black, so I'm all about strong personalities and quirk in my main characters. Not everyone is. Just be forewarned.

A New Dream ReviewA New Dream by Elaine Cantrell is a good read. It is a clean read but does make references to sex.
What do you do when your dreams are suddenly gone? Local football hero and NFL kicker Matt McCallum finds himself in this quandary. Matt wakes up in the hospital with a mangled left leg and a amputated right. His fiancée has left him and his career as a kicker is over. As they say, when one door closes another opens. This story is about Matt's journey to redefine himself with a little help from a local good girl named Violet Emerson. If only it were that easy - as Matt begins to excel in his new life his ex fiancée returns claiming they have a child together. Matt and Violet now have to see if they can make it through these obstacles placed before them. Can they forgive each other and heal their relationship?
My main complaint with this story is that Stacey (the ex) doesn't end up having any negative consequences from all bad choices. She is just evil. For me personally she should have had to face some major consequences for her deceit and shallowness. For this reason I could not give this story 5 stars.A New Dream OverviewAfter an auto accident destroys his pro-football career, Matt McCallum struggles to find a new dream for his life, but nothing engages him the way football did. After a stint in rehab, he takes a job managing a grocery store where he meets Violet Emerson.Violet works in the bakery department, but her dreams carry her far beyond the doors of Chef's Pantry. As soon as she can save the money, she plans to open a catering business. And she thinks the new manager's broad shoulders and blue eyes are simply divine.Thrown together at work, Matt and Violet find a common dream for their lives, but a loose end from Matt's past returns to jeopardize their future. Will love be enough to save their new dream before it turns into a nightmare?

Sweet Trouble (Bakery Sisters) ReviewI'll admit that I haven't read the other books in the series, so I might have been missing out on some of this story. But maybe not, because the reason I didn't like this story is that I found the characters so unlikeable.
The heroine wasn't too bad, but really, who ends up in bed with their sister's man? Even if, like she claims, "nothing happened", why would you be in that situation if things are totally innocent? And yes, kissing is cheating--you don't have to actually have sex with someone for it to "count".
And the hero! I hardly know where to start with him. He is unjustifiably angry at the heroine, and his reasons didn't hold water. He claimed that she should have let him know she was having his kid. Umm...hello? She did! She told him she was pregnant, she told him it was his, she even offered to submit to a DNA test to prove it, but he would have none of it. He refused to even consider the posibility that it was his child. What was she supposed to do, hold a gun to his head and force him to be a part of his son's life?
The hero decides he's been done wrong (although how he gets there I'll never understand), and decides to get revenge on the hero by destroying her life and suing for custody. When his lawyer tells him that such action means he might end up having to take care of the kid, he replies that "that's what nannies and boarding schools are for." What a heartless pig! Children are not meant to be used as pawns in adult power struggles. Ripping an innocent child away from a loving mother (and the only parent he's ever known) and them abandoning him to be raised by strangers just to satisfy a petty need for revenge is just plain wrong!
I couldn't stand the hero's "poor pity me" attitude. He's the one who refused to take responsibility for his child. He made his own mess. This is not the way a hero is supposed to act. I spent the whole book wanting to punch him in the nose.
I've enjoyed books by Susan Mallery before, but I recommend skipping this one.Sweet Trouble (Bakery Sisters) Overview

Sweet Talk (Bakery Sisters) ReviewClaire, a concert pianist on tour since the age of 6, comes home at the request of sister Jesse to take care of third sister Nicole (Claire's fraternal twin) who needs an operation and somebody to care for her during recovery. Nicole hasn't spoken or had contact with Claire for 20 years because she blames Claire for ruining her life (blames Claire for their Mothers' death) - won't take calls, answer mail - invite Claire to her wedding(she is currently separated from husband Drew). Nicole is also not speaking to sister Jesse and plans to never forgive her for a mistake that Jesse recently made, on top of inviting Claire to come and care for Nicole. Wyatt, Nicole's good friend, but no sexual chemistry with Nicole, is a single father who vows never to have another "relationship" with a woman other than casual sex. Nicole has filled Wyatt's head with hateful descriptions of Claire for years, so Wyatt has an immediate dislike for Claire when she arrives to care for Nicole and try to mend the familial fences. Claire and Wyatt are the love interests.
There was absolutely no "Sweet Talk" in this latest offering by Susan Mallery. While I have loved all of her previous books, this one offered chapter after chapter of of one sister declaring "you ruined my life" louder than the next. These characters are so very immature, shallow and thoroughly dislikable that you don't care for them even after they get together. I kept hoping that the sisters would open their eyes, grow up and start acting like adults, unfortunately, that didn't happen. The dysfunction of this family is front and center from individual issues through relationship issues. There wasn't even any good romance with only two very short sexual encounters between Claire and Wyatt. The rest of the book was hashing and re-hashing, but not dealing with, the "you ruined my life" themes. This was not a fun read.Sweet Talk (Bakery Sisters) Overview
