Stories of the local folks make me feel like I'm a fly on the wall in Primo's Bar, and I wish I were! Hawaiian folklore combined with the crazy mischief Mike's characters get into make for a great, relaxing read. Almost like being in the islands....Is 'Chicken Skin' a Local Delicacy (Primo's) OverviewThe second book in the Primo's series. A series of interlinked short stories, humorous and a little spooky, set in and around a bar in the town of Kapa'a. Check out the offbeat characters who frequented this bar in the early 70's. Waikane (last full-blooded menehune on Kauai), Moki and Kimo (the Hawaiian version of Laurel and Hardy), Kim Chee (pawn shop owner and nickel squeezer) and Malama Largesse (five-times married owner of the local crackseed/bakery/candy store). Learn what happened when the US Air Force mistakenly dropped an atomic bomb on Kauai. See how bungee-jumping was invented off the Kalihiwai bridge. Killing the Messenger: A Story of Radical Faith, Racism's Backlash, and the Assassination of a Journalist ReviewThomas Peele is a new voice, and a refreshing one. He managed to take a complex subject and make it simple, dramatic and unique. What's amazing about "Killing the Messenger" is that it so easily blends two topics that have been largely unexplored: The rise and metamorphoses of a certain societal sect that has been alternately popularized and ridiculed; and the safety and sanctity of a profession - journalism - that is under siege, and not just economically. We learn that these areas of life are alive and well, even as they merged violently when Chauncey Bailey, a journalist himself, was gunned down as he pursued a story about a family and its connection to the Black Muslim movement. We learn that, despite the fact that the journalism profession is threatened more often than people realize by this violence, on top of its own economic instability, journalists like Peele and Bailey still go to work every day, pursuing the truth, no matter what the risk. That's what Peele did, doggedly picking up and finishing the story that Bailey wanted to write about a family that exhibited a remarkable amount of power in Oakland, Calif. while carrying the banner of a movement. As I said, Thomas Peele's writing is a refreshing new voice in a literary world that seriously needs him. He has the street-tough story-telling ability of Elmore Leonard, only better. I doubt that there are others who take such topics and blend them together in a book as well as he did, a book that provides both a history lesson but also a necessarily analysis.
