Earthly Delights: Corinna Chapman Mystery (Corinna Chapman Mysteries (Poisoned Pen Press)) ReviewIn Flinders Lane in Melbourne Australia, there is an architecturally, interesting building based on the roman design named Insular. It is home to Corinna Chapman, a Junoesque woman who owns a bakery Earthly Delights on the ground level. Each apartment has a roman name and their inhabitants are an eclectic quirky bunch that includes techno geeks, a dominatrix and a female witch. It is a peaceful place until the flyers start coming to the tenants claiming it is home to a temptress, whore or witch. The person goes from sending flyers to painting graffiti to attempted arson.
While Corinna is very concerned about this, she is dealing with other troubles. She saved the life of a heroin addict who almost died near her door. She meets Daniel, a man of mystery, who is concerned that people are dying from heroin because they are given it in its purest form. She meets Jason, a recovering addict who attaches herself to her, helps her with her baking and is the key to finding the clue that will let them discover who is behind the junkie's deaths. Corinna also is thrilled to realize that the handsome Daniel is in love with her even though she is not a size five.
The Corinna Chapman mysteries are nothing like the Phryne Fisher tales because the women are different as the latter is comfortable in all settings while the former struggles when somewhat outside her norm. The heroine of EARTHLY DELIGHTS is a determined woman who chooses her own path and takes risks on people that most individuals will avoid. Although there is very little action, this tale is a pleasurable interesting reading experience with mysteries great and small.

To Have and to Kill LP: A Wedding Cake Mystery (Wedding Cake Mysteries) ReviewMary Jane Clark comes up with a great recipe for this murder mystery as the murderer certainly wasn't the one I thought it was !
Clark keeps the reader guessing as Piper, a struggling actress who is trying to get over a broken engagement and moves back in with her parents, to get her life back together joins in the family cake decorating/baking business. When she agrees to do the cake for a television star, life gets mighty interesting in the kitchen.
I liked the book; sure, it wasn't intense, but I read it for the sheer enjoyment of her writing style. The only thing that would have made the book even better would have been if Piper, the main character, and Jack (the handsome FBI Agent) had gotten together. They are friends, but if they had gotten together as a real couple in the end it would have been a nice ending.
My wife is anxious to try Piper's "Simple Buttercream Icing" recipe for the wedding cake that was included in the book. Also, I thought it was interesting that Piper was using Twitter -- looks like Clark is interested in showing that she's "with it" ! (smile)
An easy read because the chapters are short which enables readers to put it down and pick it back up. A good book that is enjoyable and will keep your interest.To Have and to Kill LP: A Wedding Cake Mystery (Wedding Cake Mysteries) Overview

Pie ReviewPolly Portman owned a pie shop called --- what else? --- "Pie" in the very small town of Ipswitch, Pennsylvania. Alice spent many happy hours with her Aunt Polly at the shop, keeping her company, being an extra pair of hands, and learning a lot about the art and science of pie making in the process. What was most unusual about the shop was that Polly never charged for her pies. She just could not bring herself to accept money for doing what she loved to do --- bake delicious pies and give them away to anyone who wanted one. Fresh fruit, cartons of eggs, bags of flour, and other pie ingredients mysteriously appeared each morning on Polly's doorstep, and those gifts were turned into wonderful pies with crusts that were amazingly delicious.
A reporter for the local newspaper wrote an article about Polly and her pies. When the Associated Press printed the story, Polly and her pies became famous overnight, and folks came from all over the country for the delectable treats. All the local pie bakers wanted to know the recipe for Polly's pie crust, which had won her many, many awards, called Blueberries, but that recipe was the one and only thing that Polly refused to share.
When Polly quietly died in her sleep, the residents of Ipswitch were saddened to lose such a good friend. No one was sadder than Alice, who dearly loved her aunt. In her will, Polly actually left her secret pie crust recipe to her very huge and very unfriendly white cat, Lardo. And she left Lardo to Alice.
Confusion reigned, and it turned the little town upside down. Someone broke into the pie shop and vandalized it while searching for the recipe. The recipe simply had to be somewhere. How could a cat own a pie crust recipe? People even wondered if it was written on Lardo's huge belly. Alice's father was highly allergic to cats, and Alice's mother was threatening to take Lardo to the pound. Then Lardo disappeared, and Alice feared he had been catnapped. The little tourist industry that had grown up around Polly's famous pies was losing business since Polly was gone and the shop was shuttered. Now just about every woman in town was baking pies, hoping to finally have a chance to win the coveted Blueberry medal that Polly had easily won 13 years in a row.
This mystery moves along fairly quickly, and the book is filled with interesting characters like the bodybuilding spinster principal of Alice's school, the publicity-driven mayor, and Charlie, Alice's inquisitive friend who wants to help her solve the mystery. In addition to being an entertaining story, each chapter begins with the recipe of a delicious pie, from buttermilk to raspberry peanut butter and many others. Some lucky readers who are pie lovers may be able to convince a mother, grandmother, or kindly aunt to bake a pie using one of Polly's recipes. But be advised that the pie crust recipe is not included.

Sweet's Sweets: The Second Samantha Sweet Mystery (The Samantha Sweet) ReviewAfter reading a review stating this book contained "santanic ritual" I wondered if the author had decided to veer away from the delicious recipe for her first Samantha Sweet book. Instead I found myself feasting on her likeable characters and enticing storyline. In my opinion, the worst thing about this book is the cravings I'm still fighting after finishing it... Amaretto Cheesecake, Pumpkin Cake with cream cheese filling and chocolate ganache icing, and every chocolate confection imaginable! However, if you are a person who thinks a DREAM of standing in a red room "with strange white symbols painted" on the walls and being told "Your strength will not fail you and many good things will come to you" describes a "satanic ritual", you should probably save your money. To Have and to Kill ReviewThis series featuring the main character of Piper Donavan, a sometimes employed, soap opera actress, was enjoyable. This mystery series is definitely more on the light side of things and that is just fine with me to change-up my heavier reading with something light. The mystery was not that difficult to solve, but I think that is almost beside the point in a series like this one. If you are looking for a light, airy mystery that is written pretty well and will hold your attention without taking too much brain power, this is the one for you. I read a variety of different genres and tend to shy away from the light stuff since it does not tend to hold my attention, so the fact that I am interested in reading another book in this series says quite a bit. It is not a perfect series, because character development needs to occur on a deeper level and maybe the mystery needs to be just a touch more difficult to solve, but I think Clark has a good starting point.To Have and to Kill Overview

Bread Alone: A Novel Review
I'm glad this little book found me, as I was hungry to read something of quality.
Wynter Morrison is a woman adrift. She's been cut loose from her secure mooring by a wayward husband (a jerk of the first water) and she's unsure what comes next. Forced from her home in an upscale LA neighborhood, Wynter finds herself on a plane to Seattle to visit her childhood friend, CM.
On her trip, Wynter discovers a small neighborhood bakery complete with an odd cast of characters. When the bottom drops out from her LA world, she relocates to Seattle and starts to work at the bakery. The routine of bread making in the middle of the night soothes her and gives her direction.
It's been a long time since I've read such a well crafted first novel. I loved the characters...flaws and all...and I loved Hendricks' detailed description of the process of bread making...
This is an author to watch...

Cookie Dough or Die (Wheeler Large Print Cozy Mystery) ReviewOlivia Greyson is the owner of The Gingerbread House which occupies the first floor of her Victorian home in Chatterley Heights. It is a shop that features cookie cutters and other baking items. Olivia lives upstairs with her tiny dog Spunky. Olivia (Livie) and her friend Maddie run the shop and Maddie bakes and creates the most yummy cookies. Olivia gets to be close friends with prominent Chatterley Heights citizen and business woman Clarisse Chamberlain who also has a passion for cookie cutters. She often helped out at Livie's shop and gave her business advice.
No one it town is more shocked than Livie when she learns of Clarisse's death. The sheriff calls it an accident, maybe suicide, but Livie can't wrap her head around those ideas. Clarisse was too meticulous and too strong, neither of these options fit. She knows Clarisse had something on her mind of late but until Livie can figure out what that was she can't be sure, but her gut is telling her this was not an accident. Some one killed Clarisse Chamberlain and she is going to find out who before the last cookie crumbles.
I really liked this story. It is a wonderful debut to what I am sure will be a wonderful series. Cozy mysteries are my favorites and I am continually amazed by the variety of settings used for each series. A simple cookie cutter shop is an excellent setting and I can see many possibilities for future mysteries.
The foundation has been well laid in this first story. Letting us get to know just enough about they main characters to want us to keep reading more about them to learn who they are below the surface. The supporting characters in this story were fun, quirky, opinionated, smart, and witty. I hope they are around in future installments.
This is not only a new series but a new author. An author I can't find anything about. Not a web page, a Facebook page or email. Leads me to wonder if this is a new author or an author we already know using a pseudonym. If Virginia Lowell is indeed a brand new author, this is an excellent written mystery for a debut. I hope we can learn more about her in the future and that she continues to write books as good as this one. Through my research I did find out that book two in this series A Cookie Before Dying is slated to be released December 6, 2011.

Cream Puff Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) ReviewI have been a fan of this series since the beginning and have faithfully read each and every one of them as they are published. It's one of my favorites and I look forward to settling in with Hannah and her friends and family as well as having a mystery mixed in for good measure.
This one was different for me. The first 100 pages or so I was really enjoying the book. Definitely a "cozy" story since no murder had been committed yet. I was appreciating getting caught up with the characters from the previous novels and zipped right along. Around page 110 things started deteriorating. The mystery portion was introduced and I thought it was fairly weak. Lots of unrealistic situations occur to the point of spoiling it. All cozies have bits of reality that you have to ignore, but this one pushed it past acceptable. All of the police department's detectives are unable to work the case for some reason or another, so they decide to have a cookie shop owner run the police investigation? It's one thing for a mystery to revolve around a person sticking their nose in where it doesn't belong, its another thing to have us all swallow that four different police officers recruit an amateur and let her solve the mystery. A detective is brought in from the big city and even she lets Hannah take the lead and do all the investigation. Just too over the top for me.
By the time the last 100 pages came around, I was finding it hard to stay with the book. I wasn't motivated to finish other than out of loyalty to the series and a personal desire to finish every book I read.
I did like the Mike/Norman/Hannah situation and was glad to see some movement in that story line. I also got a real kick out of Moise (Hannah's cat) and the mystery of the disappearing food. I actually liked that mystery better than the main murder in the novel.
I'll keep reading these since they have been so good so far, but I am hoping for better in the future. If you have never read this series, I would recommend going back and starting with the very first one. Since so much of this book is dependent upon characters, it would be really helpful to have all the previous background -- won't stand alone very well.Cream Puff Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) Overview

Plum Pudding Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) ReviewThe book starts out with a murder, and then backtracks to the day before a man was shot to a scene at The Cookie Jar. Hannah is selling cookies to the local Christmas tree lot for the holidays, and she and her partner, Lisa, are busy baking cookies, and preparing for the holidays. Hannah's Mom is wondering why her partner in the antique business has been cancelling so many social outings. Norman is helping Hannah put her first Christmas tree in the condo. Mike is worrying about some suspicions he has over local citizens at the tri-state mall. Andrea is selling houses and keeping her precocious daughter, Tracy, busy. The plot thickens when it becomes obvious that a local business owner may have been cheating several of the town's citizens. Norman is helpful, kind and sweet, and Mike shows up for handouts of food late at night. Mike's dalliances with other women are brought up by Hannah and then dismissed. Hannah continues to date both men, and I found myself wanting Norman to dump her. He deserves a woman who appreciates his care for her, and Hannah seems to be attracted to the bad boys. The end of the book brings yet another former suitor into the pictures. This book is really the story of Elsie and Reba, two young women, separated by 63 years, but facing similar life altering choices in their lives. I fell in love with Elsie immediately, her heart so pure, so honest and always thinking of her family and how each move she makes will impact them. She grows up so quickly, because of the war, because of her situation, and her childhood is over. She adores her parents, and she keeps their traditions and the art of baking close to her.
Loving Reba was only a little harder. Her young life wasn't easy, and she didn't have that strong family support system to lift her up. I think I wanted her to question her life with Riki less, but of course Sarah McCoy knows how to weave this story, and I should never have doubted her.
Trying to give a synopsis of this book is not easy, and yet I want to put it into my own words. Simply put this book is beautiful and heart breaking. The back and forth in the story is done so very well. I was excited to read each story, anxious to see how they would progress, and eventually intertwine. The historical research is accurate and so strikingly frightening. I must say this second novel far exceeded my expectations, I won't soon forget these characters and their story.
I've given this book 4.5 out of 5 stars, and if you love history, love stories, or a story of love over hate, this book will stir in your heart for a long time.The Baker's Daughter: A Novel Overview

Hannah was in her usual keen sleuthing mode. I liked how the second short story referred back to Joanne's story and recipes. I am especially thrilled to be introduced to Leslie Meier. Stories of the local folks make me feel like I'm a fly on the wall in Primo's Bar, and I wish I were! Hawaiian folklore combined with the crazy mischief Mike's characters get into make for a great, relaxing read. Almost like being in the islands....Is 'Chicken Skin' a Local Delicacy (Primo's) OverviewThe second book in the Primo's series. A series of interlinked short stories, humorous and a little spooky, set in and around a bar in the town of Kapa'a. Check out the offbeat characters who frequented this bar in the early 70's. Waikane (last full-blooded menehune on Kauai), Moki and Kimo (the Hawaiian version of Laurel and Hardy), Kim Chee (pawn shop owner and nickel squeezer) and Malama Largesse (five-times married owner of the local crackseed/bakery/candy store). Learn what happened when the US Air Force mistakenly dropped an atomic bomb on Kauai. See how bungee-jumping was invented off the Kalihiwai bridge. Devil's Food (Corinna Chapman Mysteries) ReviewKerry Greenwood is the author of two delightful series featuring two unusual and interesting women: the Hon. Phryne Fisher and the zaftig Melbourne baker, Corinna Chapman. This novel is the third appearance of Ms. Chapman and her collection of unusual neighbors; ex-junkie apprentice, Jason; Israeli lover Daniel; and assorted cats and dogs. The series not only brings to the reader the smells and tastes of her bakery, Earthly Delights, but the various mysteries and troubles in which she gets involved which she has to solve.
Corinna, assisted by Daniel and others, are faced with three situations in this entry. First is the appearance of an herbal tea said to guarantee weight loss, but which almost kills four people. Then there appears a mysterious customer, a monk, requesting her to make 'famine bread,' a tasteless concoction which easily could be made of sawdust. The two problems merely have one thing in common: an aversion to obesity, which, of course, is anathema to Corinna's beliefs. Lastly, her estranged mother turns up after her father disappears, demanding that Corinna find him and make him return.
"Devil's Food," as its predecessors, is a recipe for light but delightful reading. And the actual recipes included at the rear should appeal to those of us with a sweet tooth. It's all good fun, and recommended.Devil's Food (Corinna Chapman Mysteries) Overview

Strawberry Shortcake Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) ReviewFollowing up on the success of The Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder, this is the second volume in the Hannah Swenson Murder Mysteries. Here again, we find Hannah coping with the brutal Minnesota winter when the unthinkable happens. Hannah finds a body! The local high school coach and secret wife beater is found dead face down in Hannah's strawberry shortcake. His wife certainly has a motive, but is she the real killer? The police are inclined to think so, but Hannah certainly does not. With the aide of her sister, Andrea, she sets out to find the real killer. Many suspenseful twists and turns follow as Hannah and Andrea proceed on their relentless mission to free an innocent woman. Will they succeed and find the real killer? Only in the last few chapters will you find out the answer to this riddle.
Once again, author Joanne Fluke has surpassed herself with another excellent novel. The cozy and inviting atmosphere found in the first novel continues here against the backdrop of the cruel Minnesota cold. Many delicious recipes are included so you can share the experience right along with Hannah and her friends. Her strained relationship with her mother continues as her friendship with Norman grows and her closeness to her sister Andrea deepens. The novel keeps you in suspense right up until the very end providing an exhilarating mystery ride. This is a novel not to be missed. Very highly recommended.
