Bon Appetit (French Twist, Book 2) ReviewBon Appetit by Sandra Byrd is a book about a young girl, Lexi, who moves to France to work in a bakery and go to school to become a pastry chef. Lexi's transition from America to France is fraught with difficulty. First of all, so many of the people with whom she deals hate Americans, which is understandable as a cultural generalization, but not of Lexi who is wonderfully warm, respectful of French culture, and best intentioned. Secondly, school is hard and complicated by different personalities and someone sabotaging the students' recipes. Finally, Lexi has to make difficult choices concerning her romantic life and her professional career. You'll find yourself pulling for Lexi as she encounters each obstacle, and your heart will soar each time she learns to trust in God for guidance and companionship.
Lexi's story is great. This book is the second in a series, the first book being Let Them Eat Cake. However, you do not need to have read the first book to completely enjoy and understand Bon Appetit (I still haven't read the first book, but I will).
The best part about this book for me were the discussions on food. Seriously. I love to cook and reading about the cooking school and all the fancy desserts being made was just facsinating to me. Best of all, there are several recipes featured in the book. Most are desserts, but there was a recipe for French Onion Soup which, once altered to suit a vegan diet, was DELICIOUS!!! I love French Onion Soup, but haven't had it in years because of the beef broth used in restaurants (and the fact that my one attempt to make it at home years ago was a horrible flop). I tried the recipe in this book (page 143) and LOVED IT. In fact, I started out by making half a batch in case it was bad, and went back and made a double batch the next day.
This book is truly a yummy book, for reading entertainment and your pleasure in cooking! I'm looking forward to the next French Twist book!Bon Appetit (French Twist, Book 2) Overview

The Fearless Baker: Scrumptious Cakes, Pies, Cobblers, Cookies, and Quick Breads that You Can Make to Impress Your Friends and Yourself ReviewI got an electronic version of the book, so the final version might be somewhat different.
I am not a baker. I cannot prepare desserts unless I follow instructions; so the cookbook needs to be very specific for my desserts to turn out.
The author dedicates some pages to the type of equipment that we should have. I wish that they had included photographs, as I had a hard time finding some of the equipment.
The book is divided into several chapters that cover: cookies, bars and bites, cakes, pies and tarts, fruit, No oven required, Best Dessert Sauces and Breakfast. It also has chapters on Sources, Metric Equivalents and Acknowledgments (people who helped with recipes and tasted them).
The first recipe that I baked was Blondies. They turned out great. The flavor was great and they were easy to prepare. The second recipe that I tried was the Cardamon Shortbread. It kind of flop on me because my mixture was not like "wet sand". I tried it again and had much better success with it. Both of them tasted good but I would have liked to see the final product to compare with what I baked.
This book is for the person who has a clue on baking. The lack of pictures makes it very hard for people like me that do not bake. The Fearless Baker: Scrumptious Cakes, Pies, Cobblers, Cookies, and Quick Breads that You Can Make to Impress Your Friends and Yourself Overview

From A French Country Kitchen - The Culinary Tradition Of La Madeleine French Bakery & Cafe ReviewThis book is filled with many recipes that you may find in the restaurant depending upon their current menu and time of the year. This book is a well written book featuring some of the common delights of French Cuisine. What impresses me most is that most recipes have suggestions for dishes that will go with the recipe, or how to use the leftovers if you should have any.
The book is well illustrated with photographs of some of the dishes. Directions are clear and concise with very little room for confusion. The recipes are very tasty, and fairly easy to prepare for most cooks.
Selections in this book vary from simple to more complex. My personal favorite out of this book is the Potatoes Au Gratin, a recipe that I have been asked for more than once. The Brie soup is delightful, and perfect on a cool weather day. The book also features desserts, meats, and so much more.
If you enjoy their restaurant, or even if you have an interest in French cooking, this book may be ideal for you. Recipes are made with ingredients that are common to the American taste, and can be found readily in a grocery store. From A French Country Kitchen - The Culinary Tradition Of La Madeleine French Bakery & Cafe Overview
