Bon Appetit (French Twist, Book 2) ReviewBon Appetit by Sandra Byrd is a book about a young girl, Lexi, who moves to France to work in a bakery and go to school to become a pastry chef. Lexi's transition from America to France is fraught with difficulty. First of all, so many of the people with whom she deals hate Americans, which is understandable as a cultural generalization, but not of Lexi who is wonderfully warm, respectful of French culture, and best intentioned. Secondly, school is hard and complicated by different personalities and someone sabotaging the students' recipes. Finally, Lexi has to make difficult choices concerning her romantic life and her professional career. You'll find yourself pulling for Lexi as she encounters each obstacle, and your heart will soar each time she learns to trust in God for guidance and companionship.
Lexi's story is great. This book is the second in a series, the first book being Let Them Eat Cake. However, you do not need to have read the first book to completely enjoy and understand Bon Appetit (I still haven't read the first book, but I will).
The best part about this book for me were the discussions on food. Seriously. I love to cook and reading about the cooking school and all the fancy desserts being made was just facsinating to me. Best of all, there are several recipes featured in the book. Most are desserts, but there was a recipe for French Onion Soup which, once altered to suit a vegan diet, was DELICIOUS!!! I love French Onion Soup, but haven't had it in years because of the beef broth used in restaurants (and the fact that my one attempt to make it at home years ago was a horrible flop). I tried the recipe in this book (page 143) and LOVED IT. In fact, I started out by making half a batch in case it was bad, and went back and made a double batch the next day.
This book is truly a yummy book, for reading entertainment and your pleasure in cooking! I'm looking forward to the next French Twist book!Bon Appetit (French Twist, Book 2) Overview

Let Them Eat Cake (French Twist, Book 1) ReviewI liked this book so much, I scarfed in down almost as fast as I would a piece of my mom's legendary brownie chocolate cake.
While I've enjoyed some Christian "chick lit" lately, some of it can veer into the self-consciously cute and trying a little too hard to be funny zone. Not this book. Sandra Byrd's humor is wryly amusing instead of broadly slapstick, her protagonist's interaction with God believable instead of goofy.
The story is Alexandra "Lexi" Stuart, a 20-something who is having trouble getting her career bearings in a post-college world. When yet another job falls through, this Francophile decides to follow her heart and work for a much smaller paycheck in a French bakery.
Her adventures at the bakery, her attraction to two very different guys, and her steps back to a relationship with God, make for some of the most enjoyable reading I've done in a while. Lexi is an appealing character, and by the time the story wraps up, you feel you've made a friend--and if you're like me, you'll applaud her choice at the end of the book.
After reading this, I handed it off to my 20-year-old daughter, who also devoured it (appropos word for a book largely about food!) in one weekend. While this tale of a "quarterlife crisis" will go over very well with twenty-somethings, age won't matter when it comes to enjoying this book. It's a good story, told with humor and verve, and pages turn effortlessly.
P.S. I really liked the way actual images were interspersed in the copy, such as those of e-mails, application forms, classifieds, personal notes, etc. And the recipes! I'll definitely be trying "Boyfriend Bait Stroganoff."Let Them Eat Cake (French Twist, Book 1) Overview

Piece de Resistance: A Novel ReviewI have been aching to read Sandra Byrd's "Piece de Resistance". This wonderful novel picks up where "Bon Apetit" left off. Lexi has returned to Seattle from her bakery training in Paris to run the latest Delacroix Bakery. She is running into some challenges and is unsure if she can do it. She hopes that her interpretation of events and her study of Philippians is leading her in the right direction. She is also at a crossroads in her love life. Will she choose Dan, the Seattle lawyer, who makes her heart skip a beat when he enters a room? Or Philippe, the exotic Frenchman with the beautiful little Celine, who has captured Lexi's heart?
Byrd's writing sparkles like the Bijoux Bakery. I was riveted from cover to cover. The suspense builds as the story progresses, drawing the reader into a deep investment into Lexi's personal and professional choices. You'll believe that these characters live right next door to you.Piece de Resistance: A Novel Overview

The Cassandra Cookbook ReviewCassandra Lee gets one life-changing blow after another. Having caught her fiancé in a compromising situation, only days before they exchange nuptials, Cassandra has more on her plate than she knows what to do with. The Cassandra Cookbook by Shawn James is not only about cakes and cookies, but how one woman is determined to secure the future of her parents and herself, by the choices she has to make. Will she be able to successfully make everyone happy?
Cassandra's parents, Carlton and Helen Lee, are the owners of Cassandra, a bakery they opened when she was but a little baby. Through the years Cassandra followed in her parents' footsteps, learning the tricks and tools of the trade. Using the knowledge and her eye for attracting people, Cassandra helped to change the profits coming in to their bank accounts. When a major conglomerate corporation takes interest in the bakery's cookbook, a sign of the changes to come are obvious.
James delivered a series of characters who were three dimensional, and believable. The plot was well developed. However, with such a great storyline the editing needed to be on point and it was not. The grammatical errors, extra words, and punctuation misplacements served to be a distraction at certain points throughout the book. Even with the errors, I still recommend The Cassandra Cookbook to a reader looking for romance, a little drama and whimsical characters.

The Burning Jacket ReviewOf the three main characters in this book I was able to identify best with the oldest one because of her alternative life style, and secondly with the youngest one, even though I am closest in age to the middle one. I enjoyed the various themes Nel touches on, including deforestation, modern terrorism, the elderly, and broken homes. Also, being a dog lover I was happy to have dogs be a definite part of the story. It was a very engrossing read and I have recommended it to all my reader friends. The Burning Jacket Overview

The Icing on the Cupcake: A Novel ReviewAnsley Waller just had a really bad night. Dumped by her fiancé and humiliated in from of her sorority sisters, she decides to head to New York and move in with her wealthy grandmother Vivian, who's been estranged from the family since she abandoned Ansley's mother at the tender age of five. But regardless of her mother's opposition, Ansley needs a place to lick her wounds and determines that now is as good a time as ever to reconcile with a grandmother she never knew. Both apprehensive, the two women begin to bond over their shared love for baking. But Vivian's keeping some secrets of her own while dealing with an IRS investigation into her late husband's investments that could cost her everything.
When Vivian insists that Ansley get a job or be sent back home with her tail between her legs, she decides to play to her strengths and open her own cupcake shop. Determined to prove she can make it on her own, Ansley, using recipes from a book that's been passed down for generations in their family discovers that it just may hold the key to the secrets of Vivian's past.
THE ICING ON THE CUPCAKE is a charming story, thick with Texas charm and baking anecdotes. Ross does a beautiful job of developing her characters and creating suspense surrounding the mystery of how any mother could leave their five-year-old child. You'll root for Ansley as she struggles to figure out what to do with her life now that becoming a privileged housewife is not an option any longer and your mouth will water as she stress-bakes her way through her troubles. A lovely novel with a decadent recipe at the end of each chapter, I have a feeling you'll find THE ICING ON THE CUPCAKE as sweet as I did.The Icing on the Cupcake: A Novel Overview

Pastries: A Novel of Desserts and Discoveries ReviewI picked up this book because I like novels that have a food base to them. I especially love baked goods (who doesn't?) so Pastries seemed to fit the bill.
What a groaner this has turned out to be. The characters are flat, the dialogue is painfully unbelievable (from the French assistant who inserts a "oui" or a "bon jour" with every third line he utters to the movie director who describes his movie to Sunya over dinner like he's reading from a 13-year-old girl's journal of prose) and the plot twists are just plain silly. (For example, over dinner Sunya is stunned when her date rhapsodizes about a hole-in-the-wall doughnut shop with silk curtains he frequented as a boy. Guess what -- it's the shop Sunya's mom opened when Sunya was a girl.)
Then, as other reviewers have mentioned, the Bakery Wars?! For someone who really isn't doing much to save her business, Sunya sure get s a lot of ink in the city's major newspaper. And when I hit the part with the newspaper columnist making note of a man loitering outside Sunya's bakery I said aloud, "Come on."
All WTO references, and those involved and inspired by them, feel forced and unsupported.
Kirchner seems to create dialogue, characters and situations just to fill in the unexplainable gaps in the overall plot.
I keep picking up the book and giving it another chapter hoping it gets better, but it has become almost laughable (Perhaps I would laugh about it if I hadn't paid for it).
I gave it two stars because there are some wonderful descriptions of complicated pastries along the way.Pastries: A Novel of Desserts and Discoveries Overview

Miss Invisible ReviewFreddie is a just your regular almost 30 something woman, who has a job she enjoys, with a boss she hates, trying to find that special guy. Oh and she's also on the bigger side which ironically makes her easy to miss. She's learned to blend in the crowd, pleasing society by eating carrot sticks in public and then going home and downing a pint of ice cream. She's learned to keep her anger inside and stay hidden. Then she meets Deborah, a caterer who gets Freddie to release her true self and become a new person. Once Freddie finds her voice, her life changes- for the better.
Oh I loved loved LOVED this book! The story is excellent, the characters are great, there's so much food in the book! I could really relate to Freddie. I'm not a big girl, but neither am I a size 6 either. I felt the same way she does about how smaller girls always get the attention from society and everyone else gets ignored. And I was really glad that Freddie showed realistic reactions to those girls that wear low cut jeans and belly baring shirts. I loved that there is a character named Deborah in this book. Usually when I read a book where there is a character that shares my name she usually gets it shorten down to Debbie (ugh). Not so here, and what an awesome character Deborah was. I wish I had a friend like her in my life. I really felt for Freddie when her father kept insulting her throughout her life. It really hurt during the party when he did it to her face right in front of everyone. I'm glad that the author did not feel that this book needed to have a tidied ending where Freddie and her father magically get along. I would not have believed it if it was written that way, it would have been completely unrealistic. I just loved how real this book is. Christians do tend to be prejudiced in regards to appearance no matter what they say.
I really loved this book. And I totally did not feel guilty about eating ice cream while reading it either! This is one of the best chick lit books I have ever read, Christian or secular. This is a perfect book to pass along to non Christian readers as well, it's not preachy at all, just a fun good read. If you haven't read any of Laura Jensen Walker's other books, I highly recommend reading those as well. I know I'll be anxiously awaiting her next one!Miss Invisible Overview

Henry's Sisters ReviewEven though the Bommarito sister's, Isabelle, Janie and Cecelia are close emotionally, they've all moved away from Trillium River, except for Cecelia. That is until they receive one of their mothers infamous pink notes beckoning them home. She's having surgery and needs the girls to come home and take care of their grandmother and mentally challenged brother, as well as run the family bakery. Each sister has her reasons for not wanting to return home. But the one reason they all have in common is the very reason they are asked to return - their mother River. River is, well, a bitch. She is cruel and mean and spiteful. No one wants to be around her. But the women all realize that while they may not want to help their mother, their brother and grandmother need them.
Isabelle (Cecelia's fraternal twin) lives a lonely, dark, depressing, self destructive lifestyle. Well known for her award winning photographs, she doesn't let anyone "in". Living a life full of traveling to third world countries, drinking Kahlua for breakfast, and hanging out her loft window naked (who cares if the people in the other building can see), she is afraid to commit and spends her nights with one night stands. One of which may just might get her killed.
Janie is a famous mystery author who leads a life alone on her houseboat. She hates going out and will only do so when necessary. She also has OCD and her rituals are very important to her. When Isabelle comes to discuss the pink letter from their mother, she forces her to walk out and come back in because she did not have a smile on her face when she came in the first time. Sweet, loving, quiet Janie spends her day thinking of the most gruesome ways in which to kill people in her books. Ideas that fill her head day and night. Janie is afraid that if she returns home to the harshness of her mothers tongue she will further retreat into her self as opposed to the centered calm self she is while on her houseboat. And what happens when poor frumpy Janie faces the potential of falling in love?
Cecelia is a bitter, harsh kindergarten teacher who has remained close to the family home to help care for her family. She also is not even close to being afraid of speaking her mind. Often hitting below the belt with the venom she spews. She's extremely overweight as she continually shoves food in her mouth to compensate for the hurt she is feeling. The hurt from a father that left them when they were young, and the hurt of a ass of a husband who is cheating on her with a bimbo. She also has two beautiful daughters. One who spends each month "trying on" different religions, and one who is so unsure of her self, pulls her hair out a strand at a time.
Henry is beautiful. While he is mentally challenged, he doesn't have a care in the world. He loves the work he does at the bakery, the shelter and the church. He is the light of his sisters lives. They will, and have, fought for him. Both physically and emotionally. There is nothing they wouldn't do for them.
The Bommarito sisters, along with their brother Henry, had harsh childhoods. From their Vietnam vet father leaving them to their mother struggling to keep them in food by stripping, that is when she wasn't in bed with her depression. The girls ended up helping keep the family afloat by baking during these times. Although it was just never enough. Several times they were placed in foster care, providing them the first sense of stability they've had in a long time while at the same time causing one of them an extreme amount of pain.
Will coming home to Trillium River be the wake up call that this family needs? Will they be able to finally deal with the trauma's of their lives and finally find peace and happiness? Will they once and for all get the answers that they've unknowingly been searching for? But just when things seem as if they are finally turning around they get the most crushing, heart breaking news they could ever get. They are faced with something that they are not willing to deal with and could very well destroy any of the progress that they've made. It is now time for them to put everything else aside and come together as a family.
A beautifully written tale of one families struggles and triumphs. Of how they overcome adversity and figure out a way to move on with their lives. Of how to love and trust again. Of forgiveness and family. Full of laugh out loud moments and heartbreaking scenes, scenes that will have you crying as you read them, Henry's Sisters is one story that you will regret not reading.Henry's Sisters Overview

How to Bake a Perfect Life: A Novel ReviewWith "How To Bake A Perfect Life," Barbara O'Neal once again demonstrates why the Romance Writers of America awarded her their top prize for novels with romantic elements in 2010. And, in my opinion, she's baked her own slice of perfection in this book. Yummy recipes and sensual descriptions of bread making and baking will satisfy the cravings of an ardent foodie. Those who want a story about family rifts and healing will find it in Ramona's dealings with her strong, restaurant-owning clan. Lost love and teenage angst play against a hearty dose of war's realism.
The creation of a book, much like the making of a loaf of bread, requires the careful combination and layering of many aspects--plot, structure, characterization, voice. "How To Bake A Perfect Life" takes all those elements and adds a dash of the unknown, a willingness to take a chance by focusing the story on an older heroine. There's a lot going on, but somehow Ms. O'Neal simply makes it work, and the result is one of the best books I've read in ages. How to Bake a Perfect Life: A Novel Overview

By Bread Alone ReviewNew Zealand author Sarah-Kate Lynch has come up with a quirky, original, touching charmer of a book about an English wife and mother who is anything but ordinary.
Esme Stack makes sourdough bread every day of her life, and its texture, aroma and "ambience," if you will, measures out her days. But when the book opens, Esme cannot bring herself to bake her bread, something she has been doing for decades. Her husband Pog (Hugo) is worried sick; her irrascible and nasty father-in-law Henry is secretly worried, and her divinely unique 4-year-old son Rory is not right at all.
As the story unfolds in delightfully fey meetings between Esme and her deceased Grandmother (you have to read it to believe it) and in flashbacks to the past, it gradually becomes clear that Esme and Pog have had a great tragedy: one that is barking at the heels of Esme's sanity. But what? On the outside, Esme is a ferociously organized housewife, baker, artist, nurturer of sick and lame animals (the bits about the donkey are hilarious). We know she once had a career, but not why she left it. We know she is holding something terrible at bay, but not what it is.
The gradual breaking of Esme's shell of protection is heartbreaking in its intensity and almost joyous in its resurrection of her soul.
This is simply a fabulous book. I am looking forward to reading "Blessed Are the Cheesemakers," by the same author! What a find!By Bread Alone Overview

Seriously Serendipity (A Holiday Romantic Comedy) (Christmas in Miller's Village) ReviewSanta Claus has come to town, and he's moving in on Camille's grandma. He's also brought along his grandson, and once he and Camille meet sparks fly. Not an issue if they weren't ultimately made to work together to save Santa's bakery.
There's lots of slapstick, lots of snark, and lots of funny. I'll just say I agree with others here and say it's cute. Go girl power.
That being said, I'm a huge fan of Shopaholic and Bitter is the New Black, so I'm all about strong personalities and quirk in my main characters. Not everyone is. Just be forewarned.
As far as errors, my copy was just fine. My chapters were all good, there weren't any mistakes. Maybe I have a later edition, or something, but mine was fine.Seriously Serendipity (A Holiday Romantic Comedy) (Christmas in Miller's Village) Overview

Icing On The Cake ReviewLiz Talbot has reinvented herself and though life is a struggle, she's doing fairly well. Then, her late ex-husband's will is read, naming her sole beneficiary to a fourteen million dollar estate. Needless to say, the current Mrs. Talbot is not happy and contests the will. Liz finds herself trying to run her bread bakery which has been fighting to stay afloat since the no carb craze hit as well as trying to work with the woman who stole her husband to keep the ad agency he left her alive. If that were all she faced, it would be daunting, but Liz has also found a guy who makes her feel alive again, but she has no idea how he fits in her world, or if he does. Then, there is her mother, Sally, who is outrageous and wonderful, but a pita, especially to those who love her. Think of Shirley Maclaine's characters in most of her recent roles, and you will know Sally. Somehow, Liz needs to make all this work between dodging court summons from the woman referred to as her.
*** Most of the time when a book tends to be rambling, it's a horrid experience, but this book does that, and it is far from horrid. Liz is funny and very real, as are all the characters, even the dreaded "her." You may just have a hard time sticking to the Atkins diet after reading this; don't be surprised if you start craving bread. ***
