Bahamas Out ReviewWhile this book definitely has entertaining moments, I found its dual nature as both travel guide and travelogue distracting. I would have preferred the specifics of where they stayed, etc. in an appendix at the end. The best parts are those that give brief glimpses of how life is conducted in the locales visited. At times the supercilious attitude of the author toward other tourists is more grating than funny. Paul Theroux, she is not.
The book falls into an awkward gap; It does not have thorough, detailed information about tourism options on the Out Islands as a true travel guide would have, and also does not present itself as a polished travel account. Perhaps in trying to be both, it fails at being neither?
If you are planning a trip to the Out Islands, this book would make an entertaining, if short, read.Bahamas Out Overview

Cake Boss: Stories and Recipes from Mia Famiglia ReviewCake Boss is more than a gorgeous book with mouth watering recipes. Cake Boss is a memoir of the Valastro family, Buddy's remarkable father who played such a positive role in where Buddy is today... and within the first few pages of this book you will know that this is a book about family. From Danny Dragone, who helps out wherever he is needed, Stephanie who was the first woman to work in back with the bakers (no small feat), Joey the brother in law who is not only married to Buddy's sister, but is also one of the top bakers, the counter is run by Buddy's sisters. Little Frankie who's been in the bakery business since he could walk, and Sal who has been with the bakery since 1960. This is truly a family business.
And that is just the beginning, as I turned the pages I found myself immersed in what family means to Buddy. As I found myself reading the history of the "Cake Boss" I became immersed in the strong sense of history. I enjoyed reading about the first cakes Buddy was allowed to make, to his growing talent as a baker... to his first wedding cake where he really began to flourish.
(Who knew reading about the history of a bakery and a family could be so interesting?)
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. While I have heard of the show Cake Boss, I admit I have never watched it. I can assure you I am going to start now. This book jump started my heart for a family I did not know, and reading this book makes me want to know more.

My Life from Scratch: A Sweet Journey of Starting Over, One Cake at a Time ReviewI work in a bookstore and read soooooooooo many books that and often I lose interest and toss the book aside to move on to the next one.
Well. I LOVED this book. I read it in two days and found myself making home made bread and vanilla cake (which was THE BEST EVER).
This is the story of Sandra Bullocks's sister, Gesine, who worked in Hollywood for her sisters production company and gave up a career most American's would drool over. Famous Stars - check! Fabulous clothes - check! Lunch/dinner dates - check!
First class travel - check!
Gesine chucked all the "phoniness" of LA to follow her passion for baking and ended up opening her own bakery - due mainly to an offhand comment her sister made about Gesine's fabulous macaroons.
If you love to bake (or eat) hurry and place your order for this book. If you're not a foodie but your doing a job that drains you and long to do something else, buy this book!
It's a heartfelt, easy, inspiring, read.
Truly the best book I've read all year. I will not be loaning my copy to ANYONE. And I rarely keep books I read (I usually pass them on). I have ONE SHELF that holds favorite books (6 in all) - and this takes first place.
Did I mention I LOVED this book! Funny. Heartwarming. Inspiring. Funny.

The Bakery Girls ReviewDorothea "Dot" (b. 1911), Louise (b. 1916), and Elaine (b. 1926) grow up in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, as the daughters of baker Floyd Stitt and his wife, Clara. This story follows the girls from their childhoods to young womanhoods, and through the Great Depression and the World War II years. We learn of their hopes and dreams and their favorite songs and movies. We meet the men they care about who go off to war. Along the way, we also learn the ins and outs of the bakery business, including the vagaries of commercially-sliced bread and the restorative properties of homemade cherry pie. Each sister has a different relationship with the family bakery. Sometimes it's a welcomed one; sometimes, not. But no matter where Life takes her, each girl discovers that Stitt flour and sugar are in her blood.
Although this book is a work of historical fiction, it is based on the very real lives of Ms. Ditlow's ancestors. "The Bakery Girls" is recommended reading for women of all ages, but especially for those who are familiar with the central Pennsylvania landscape, for those who like to bake, and for those who are fascinated by the culture of The Greatest Generation. The Girl in the Italian Bakery ReviewTo read the blurb, you would think that Kenny Tingle was born and everything was downhill from there. That is not the case. His life had a lot of downhill runs but, ultimately, this is a memoir of hope. He overcame his upbringing to become a substantial citizen.
We are introduced to Kenny when he is about six, the youngest of three boys, the oldest of whom has mental disabilities. They are being raised by a single mother in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Although there is no indication why, she does not seem able to handle the boys and after a while does not take an active part in their upbringing.
This is a rare look at white urban poor. Kenny gets into the foster system for good and for ill depending upon the foster parents. He drops out of school, goes back, works while in school, drinks, smokes, commits crimes, enjoys hijinks with friends, yet overcomes it all. This is testimony to the human spirit (not to mention the Marine Corps).
The book is well-written and the characters seem like something out of a modern day Dickens tale - indicating how some things have not changed in a few hundred years. Mr. Tingle is brutally honest about his faults and short-comings and more than modest about how his efforts lifted him out of the mire of crime-ridden poverty.
This is a stark look at youth in a depressed old mill city. Ultimately, you'll just have to smile at Kenny's destiny.The Girl in the Italian Bakery Overview
