Little Cakes from the Whimsical Bakehouse: Cupcakes, Small Cakes, Muffins, and Other Mini Treats ReviewFirst, as this book's title indicates, this is a book about little desserts. From cupcakes to muffins to small cakes. Dessert in miniature, which is pretty trendy right now. So if you're looking for a repeat of their first book, you'll find it here, only in miniature form.
The corn muffin recipe was delicious, and their decorations are phenomenal.
Just to give you an idea of the recipes offered, here's a selection. . .
Anytime Little Cakes & Muffins. .
Corn Muffins, Blueberry Muffins, Zucchini Muffins, Banana Muffins, Whole Wheat Blackberry Muffins, Oatmeal Muffins, Pumpkin Muffins, Coffee Chocolate Chip Muffins, Almond Coffee Cakes, Blueberry Crumb Cakes. .
Special Occasion Little Cakes
Strawberry Shortcakes, Raspberry Cheesecakes (miniature, of course), Falling leaves (melted candy painted to look like leaves!), Pumpkin spice cheesecakes, Matt's upside-down cakes (they look soooo delicious!), Nostalgic nibbles and Devilish delights (basically their nod to the twinkie and a chocolate counterpart), Make a wish cupcakes (their interpretation of their "mini" cake from their first book, only in cupcake form), halloween cupcakes, Pate a Choux nests and Pastry Cream, Wild Meringues, and Dulce De Leche, and more!
There are even 3-d Apple bushel cakes (the actual cupcake looks like a bushel of apples - so cute!), Flower pots (the actual pot is candy coating!), and there are directions on how to make your cupcakes look like several different flowers (gorgeous!), and then there's the 3-d Christmas trees, & the much desired Tiered mini cakes (one's a dragon - it's gorgeous, another one has a Paisley design, and the final cake is decorated in beautiful Lilacs.
And all of the frosting and filling recipes they suggest using are here, plus the cake batters. I think you'll find their books inspiring, easy to use, and fun to look at over and over again.
Also, the recipe for Kaye's buttercream is in here (it is out of this world!) and it's scaled down from the version in their first book, to make half a recipe.
I can't stress this enough, this is a miniature bakery book - think cupcakes, mini muffins, muffins, and single portion desserts. If that interests you, then you're going to absolutely love this book!
As a sidenote, as anyone who owns any of their three cookbooks can tell you, the photos are fabulous! You never have to guess what your dessert is going to look like, and the templates are included in the back of the book.
Just buy it!Little Cakes from the Whimsical Bakehouse: Cupcakes, Small Cakes, Muffins, and Other Mini Treats Overview

Booze Cakes: Confections Spiked with Spirits, Wine, and Beer ReviewI was so excited when my sister sent me this book as a gift. I love baking and cakes are a specialty of mine. I was feeling very brave when I decided to make 2 of the recipes for a friend's Wedding Reception.
The first was the Mudslide Cake. It looks so chocolaty in the picture, but I followed the recipe EXACTLY and ended up with a walnut colored cake. It tasted all right, but I would not call it chocolate at all, and did not feel right bringing it to the reception to serve to guests. I ended up making a very tasty mudslide cake using my tried and true Fudge Cake recipe which I just modified a little. I used the book's recipe for the icing and drizzle and that was delicious! My modified Mudslide Cake was a big hit with the women at the reception.
Then I made the Honey Spice Beer Cake. When it came out of the oven, this was the UGLY duckling of cakes. Part of the cake looked like it was venting steam out during the baking process. When the timer went off, that area of the cake was still completely raw. The surface of the cake was wavy and bumpy looking. I left the cake in for an additional 12 minutes to try to get that area to cook a little. When it finally came out of the oven, the edges were crispy, the top was wavy and that problem area was still a little mushy. I was going to scrap the whole cake, but when I took it out of the pan, I tasted a little piece and it was actually very tasty! I had to carve the cake into a rectangular shape on a 1/4 sheet board. But once I iced it, no one even knew the difference. The honey and lemon go so well with the spices. And the Honey Beer Frosting added a little more richness. The mixed nuts on top added a salty crunch. Despite it's rough beginnings, this was one of the tastiest cakes I've ever made.
The book is really cute, clever and original. But so far the recipes I've tried could use some improvement.Booze Cakes: Confections Spiked with Spirits, Wine, and Beer Overview

Elizabeth Falkner's Demolition Desserts: Recipes from Citizen Cake ReviewThis book is not for the traditional home baker looking for something to bring to next week's pot luck. It's not really for the home baker, period, though Falkner has made an effort to provide thorough explanations (she succeeds) and minimalist versions of each dessert. That is not to say that only a professional will enjoy Demolition Desserts, it's merely that most home cooks aren't going to find a book of composed/plated desserts terribly useful.
If you are looking to expand your baking/cooking skills or to find inspiration, however, you'll be very, very excited. One of Falkner's main approaches to creating a new dessert is taking an old dessert and re-imagining and rearranging it: A Banana Split with pineapple sashimi and brandied cherries, a Lemon Meringue pie where each element gets to shine separately, "Tiramisushi" with biscotti chopsticks. Her ideas and the wacky, approachable layout of this book will really get the ball rolling if your looking for a new approach to the same-old, same-old. She even gets into some food science - there's are pages exploring sugar and different gums and thickners. The marshmallow recipe even has a variation using xanthum gum.
If you want to ease into this, the first chapter explores Chocolate Chip Cookies and the publisher's website offers the Chocolate Chip Espresso Cookies recipe for downloading.
Demolition Desserts is gutsy and inspiring, not for the faint of heart!Elizabeth Falkner's Demolition Desserts: Recipes from Citizen Cake Overview
