La Patisserie de Pierre Hermé (English and French Edition) ReviewThe good: If you want to make cakes just like they have at Dalloyau and Fauchon, buy this book. Divided into: fruit cakes, chocolate cakes, tarts, and petit fours. It tells you EVERYTHING there is to know. The pictures are stunningly beautiful, more so than ANY dessert book I have ever gotten, and I have about 12 or so. The desserts are very original - Pierre uses stuff like saffron and violet, and rose, and all sorts of flowers in his mousses for example. Cool combinations: Chocolate mousse/lemon cream chocolate cakes, genoise/raspberry/orange mousse cakes for example. I am not kidding: if you have this book you will know every single decorating technique, every single way of putting together stuff just as they do in the french bakeries. It lists just about every kind of mousse, every cake you could want, which ways to decorate them, and most importantly how to put it together. This is my favorite dessert book.
The bad: You have to know what you are doing already. The explanations are sparse. For instance, the explanations for pastry cream goes like (this is not real but an example) boil milk + vanilla. Add in whisked yolks/cornstarch. Put back on stove at 120C for a few minutes. Cool to 140 F, then put in butter. So the explanations are very sparse. All recipes are made for 2-4 cakes so you have to scale down. Everything is metric, everything is by weights (so you have to know 1 yolk = 20 g, 1 white = 30 g for instance). Gelatin is used in sheets in the book, so don't forget to put in about 1 T water for every 1/2 t of powder you use (if you're american and use gelatin powder) It helps to have "desserts by pierre herme" by Pierre and Dorie greenspan to "convert" back and forth units, since some cakes are in both books. Sometimes you may want to substitute: ie regular genoise for Pierre's genoise, regular puff pastry for Pierre's inverted puff pastry. In these cases it helps to know what you are doing first.
Overall: The best book period, in my opinion. Definitely worth the extra cost - it is worth 3 regular books. You have to know what you are doing first though, not for beginners. Other recommended books in the same French cake style: "desserts by pierre herme" by Herme and greenspan, and "art of the cake" by bugat and somebody else I forget. Both are great books (and a lot easier), though not as great as this one.La Patisserie de Pierre Hermé (English and French Edition) Overview

Cakes from Scratch in Half the Time: Recipes That Will Change the Way You Bake Cakes Forever ReviewI love to bake cookies, pies, tarts, cheesecakes etc. but have always had lousy luck with cakes. I have tried a few from the famous Cake Bible (Rose Levy Beranbaum) and from Gourmet and Bon Appetit, but while I know my way around a kitchen, I had concluded that cakes must not be my forte.
I read through Cakes From Scratch in Half the Time yesterday and baked my first cake last night (chocolate orange passion cake!). I was very impressed . Great texture and flavor. The whole thing was very easy - her methods are simple. She teaches you to assemble all the ingredients, bring the eggs to room temp by placing in hot tap water, soften the butter by placing on top of the preheating stove (or microwaving for a few seconds), and spray the pans with Baker's Joy (which Cook's Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen just confirmed works better than hand greasing and flouring of pans).
This is definitely not fussy cake-making. Most cakes are made in a single mixing bowl, so not a lot to wash. The keys are:
1. Good ingredients (cake flour, whole milk, unsalted butter, good whipping cream, bittersweet chocolate, etc.)
2. Good equipment (inexpensive aluminum light-colored cake pans)
3. Right process (add the ingredients in a particular order, don't overmix, and bake at 400).
I couldn't make the frosting because both Safeway and Whole Foods were completely out of powdered sugar. GO figure. But the cake was wonderful. I made an easy chocolate ganache from another cake in the book to frost it with. I am going to try it later this week for a birthday party with the intended frosting.
One minor nitpick so far - I think she oversimplifies the directions for melting chocolate. She says to put in the microwave on full power for 1 minute, but in my experience (in my microwave) that makes the chocolate sieze up. I have to do 50% power for a minute, then stirring after 30 second intervals until it melts. Trust your own experience there.
I am eager to try more of her cakes, but am hopeful I can get away from cake mixes forever now!Cakes from Scratch in Half the Time: Recipes That Will Change the Way You Bake Cakes Forever Overview

The Whimsical Bakehouse: Fun-to-Make Cakes That Taste as Good as They Look ReviewThis book's ONLY lack is its shortness. I wanted a few hundred more pages of ideas. However, despite its brevity the book is absolutely chock-full of ideas most of which seem obvious in retrospect but I would never have thought of (a deliberately tilted cake?).
Its strengths:
(1) the recipes are really, really good. Those who remember the old Wilton cake decorating books will understand why I say that this is not always common in books about decorating cakes.
(2) the photos illustrate creative use of color and the text contains charts to explain how to reproduce the effects and generate similar ones on one's own, using the different types of food coloring available, the pros and cons of which are clearly explained.
(3) the text explains clearly how to use "wafer chocolate," which is really a malleable and dyeable form of white chocolate, for truly stunning effects.
(4) children _love_ the cakes. My five-old-daughter grabbed this book, studied it cover-to-cover, and then asked me to read it out loud to her. She will actually sit for fifteen minutes listening intently to a description of how to construct the cakes that she likes.
This really is a generous book. The cakes are spectacular enough that the authors probably could have found some way to franchise or trademark their designs and thereby made a lot of money. Perhaps they will make a lot of money selling copies of this book (I hope so) but the information is free if you check the book out of the library. They explain enough of their methods that we all can make cakes in our kitchens that make us laugh out loud. And that is a Good Thing.The Whimsical Bakehouse: Fun-to-Make Cakes That Taste as Good as They Look Overview

Two-Bite Cupcakes ReviewWhen i got this book, I immidiately sat down with my boyfriend and took out pen and paper to take notes on which recipies I was going to try first. The book looks very promising, everything looked awesom and I was very excited. We went out and got all the ingredients (like the other person said, I was slightly scared to actually eat it due to the many whole stick of butter and everything the recipies call for). It started well, but all went south real soon. None... NONE of the icing recipies actually worked, i wasted boxes of sugar and cases of eggs. I went online and googled and asked some friends that are regular bakers what was wrong with my recipies. All signs points to the fact that many ingredients were missing in the recipies for the icing which makes them impossible.
The Brownie and Coffee cupcake that i did end up making turned out tasting great, tho the icing didn't work, i had to work with what little materials I had left (after trying and failing the icing recipies it had, twice,) and make a simple back up icing to put on it.
I will keep trying the cupcake recipies in the book but will not trust any of the icing again. Have to say, i had high hopes of the book and it was very frustrating and disappointing to be defeated by egg whites and sugar.Two-Bite Cupcakes Overview

Scandalicious: A Novel (Zane Presents) ReviewSolay has been all work and no play because her main focus has been her bakery, Scandalicious. Her business is booming, and her delicious cupcakes are flying off the shelves so her dedication has clearly paid off, but her love life is an entirely different story. With no time for men and their drama, Solay's romantic life has suffered and honey has cobwebs! (If you know what I mean) Finally ready to get her groove back, but still not ready for messy emotions or commitments, Solay goes in search of a friend with benefits. Soon she is ordering a handsome companion from Rent-A-Man agency, and before long she finds herself addicted and catching feelings. From that point forward her life begins an unexpected ride that no one involved ever expected.
Melanee is Solay's reliable baking assistant, always at the bakery before Solay whipping up the day's goods, and always hoping to mix up a brand new creation. Seemingly overnight Melanee becomes a different person, anorexic thin, withdrawn, sneaky, and then all of the sudden she's gorging food to reach a healthy weight, daydreaming throughout the work day, and whistling a tune. Solay and her employee Vidal are completely perplexed by her odd behavior and wonder what type of life Melanee leads outside of Scandalicious. They have no idea the Melanee is highly immersed in the life of masters, slaves, submission, and domination. . . always anticipating directions from her owner.
Having been unfaithful and seeking forgiveness, Chevonne is willing to do anything to get her husband, Lincoln, to put her indiscretions behind them. Agreeing to go to marriage counseling, the couple is soon told that a temporary open marriage is exactly what they need. Not at all comfortable, Chevonne is repulsed, and quickly recoils at the very idea of counseling. Lincoln, on the other hand, questions if being allowed to sleep with another woman is truly a good idea. Nothing allows a couple to learn more about each other like throwing in a third party. With the complacency of their marriage completely disrupted, both Chevonne and Lincoln decide they want their marriage to work more than ever but, has too much damage already been done? Will Lincoln seek revenge in an attempt to forgive his wife? I highly recommend reading this scintillating tale to discover the answers to these questions and more! Hobbs weaves a story so fluidly and intertwined that it will have every reader on the edge of their seats!Scandalicious: A Novel (Zane Presents) Overview

Little Cakes from the Whimsical Bakehouse: Cupcakes, Small Cakes, Muffins, and Other Mini Treats ReviewFirst, as this book's title indicates, this is a book about little desserts. From cupcakes to muffins to small cakes. Dessert in miniature, which is pretty trendy right now. So if you're looking for a repeat of their first book, you'll find it here, only in miniature form.
The corn muffin recipe was delicious, and their decorations are phenomenal.
Just to give you an idea of the recipes offered, here's a selection. . .
Anytime Little Cakes & Muffins. .
Corn Muffins, Blueberry Muffins, Zucchini Muffins, Banana Muffins, Whole Wheat Blackberry Muffins, Oatmeal Muffins, Pumpkin Muffins, Coffee Chocolate Chip Muffins, Almond Coffee Cakes, Blueberry Crumb Cakes. .
Special Occasion Little Cakes
Strawberry Shortcakes, Raspberry Cheesecakes (miniature, of course), Falling leaves (melted candy painted to look like leaves!), Pumpkin spice cheesecakes, Matt's upside-down cakes (they look soooo delicious!), Nostalgic nibbles and Devilish delights (basically their nod to the twinkie and a chocolate counterpart), Make a wish cupcakes (their interpretation of their "mini" cake from their first book, only in cupcake form), halloween cupcakes, Pate a Choux nests and Pastry Cream, Wild Meringues, and Dulce De Leche, and more!
There are even 3-d Apple bushel cakes (the actual cupcake looks like a bushel of apples - so cute!), Flower pots (the actual pot is candy coating!), and there are directions on how to make your cupcakes look like several different flowers (gorgeous!), and then there's the 3-d Christmas trees, & the much desired Tiered mini cakes (one's a dragon - it's gorgeous, another one has a Paisley design, and the final cake is decorated in beautiful Lilacs.
And all of the frosting and filling recipes they suggest using are here, plus the cake batters. I think you'll find their books inspiring, easy to use, and fun to look at over and over again.
Also, the recipe for Kaye's buttercream is in here (it is out of this world!) and it's scaled down from the version in their first book, to make half a recipe.
I can't stress this enough, this is a miniature bakery book - think cupcakes, mini muffins, muffins, and single portion desserts. If that interests you, then you're going to absolutely love this book!
As a sidenote, as anyone who owns any of their three cookbooks can tell you, the photos are fabulous! You never have to guess what your dessert is going to look like, and the templates are included in the back of the book.
Just buy it!Little Cakes from the Whimsical Bakehouse: Cupcakes, Small Cakes, Muffins, and Other Mini Treats Overview

125 Best Cupcake Recipes ReviewThe recipes in this book are very easy to bake, yet really delicious. I definetely recommend to buy it if you like to vary every now and then the little treats for the familly and friends.
Although I must give the readers a hint. I tried the "Chocolate Brownie Cupcakes" and let's get real, the recipe is NOT FOR CUPCAKES. I swear no cupcakes will come out of it. They totally stuck to the paper liners, never rose, actually they sunk and left a hole in the middle, and looked like the result of an oven catastrophe. But don't get me wrong, it was still delicious. After that, I've used the recipe as what it actually is: a brownie recipe, a very good brownie recipe. So, I've made brownies quite a few times now, in a regular 9X13" cake pan, and cut them into squares, and I'm happy to have a good unexpected brownie recipe at hand.
Most of the other recipes I've tried are indeed very tasty, specially the "Best Chocolate Cupcakes" recipe, which is absolutely excellent. Bake these cupcakes and the compliments won't stop coming your way.
Don't expect a lot of pictures of beatifully decorated cupcake pictures, since this is a RECIPE book. Just do what I do, bake this delicious recipes and decorate them using your own creativity and/or get ideas from other books.
A definete must-have in any kitchen, whether you're an occassional baker or almost a pro-baker.125 Best Cupcake Recipes Overview

The Cupcake Queen ReviewTackling issues of separation, divorce, being the new kid at school, and teen love, Heather Hepler's novel seems to have a little bit of everything. We see the mean girl scenario play out in Penny's experiences at school, but on the other hand, we also see young love blossom before our eyes. This small little young adult novel seems to have a little bit of everything in a teen's life.
Although the cover is what initially drew me to pick up this small book, the cupcakes and bakery make up a very small part of the story. Hepler draws on real-life situations that teens face to flesh out the story in the book. For instance, the first day of school scene and encounter with the school secretary are really well done. (In fact, I shared that chapter with the students in my Popular Fiction course.) The way the author depicts how Penny feels, and what she sees, are really smart. To say that Penny is uncomfortable and feeling out of place on that first day, is an understatement.
Not all the scenes in the book pop out as much as that first day of school, but there are many other memorable moments that feel close to what teenagers feel and consider important. Penny worries about her family, about her position at school, and about the boy she finds herself crushing over. She isn't one of those characters that gushes, ad nauseum about how she feels about her crush, but you can sense how much she wants to be noticed. In short, you really feel for her and want her to be happy.
While simple in its themes and ideas, The Cupcake Queen was a sweet, simple read. The issues hit on in the book are familiar, yet vital to most teens, and I can see many readers connecting to Penny. Overall, I found the story to be an easy read, but one I would recommend to many of my own students.The Cupcake Queen Overview

The Boozy Baker: 75 Recipes for Spirited Sweets ReviewThe Boozy Baker: 75 Recipes for Spirited Sweets features 75 recipes for desserts and another 25 for cocktail recipes with a lot of high-spirited commentary in between.
The author provides a description of baking ingredients followed by an introduction to 43 spirits (from amaretto to wine, alphabetically). Many of the liquor descriptions include the prevalent flavor which would be helpful to anyone not familiar with it. For example, amaretto is flavored with almonds and frangelico with hazelnuts. This could help cooks avoid flavors they don't like (and spending money for liqueurs they won't like).
I found it very helpful that the author provides a brief commentary for each recipe, and offers an alternate flavor or two for many of them. For example, you can substitute dark rum or brandy for the bourbon in the Bourbon Apple Crisp or berry-flavored vodka for the tequila in the Pink Elephant Milkshakes.
Most of the desserts require just a tablespoon or two of alcohol, so you could use a mini-bottle to try the dessert before committing to buying a larger bottle. The main exceptions are recipes using beer or wine which tend to call for a larger quantity (since the flavors aren't usually as intense as liqueurs). For instance, the champagne cake calls for 2/3 cup of Champagne plus an additional three tablespoons for the buttercream frosting.
Recipes in the Have Your Cake and Drink It Too chapter include:
* Fig and Orange Cake with Ouzo Glaze
* Green Tea and Banana Cake with Sake Syrup
* Molten Chocolate Orange Cake
* Plum Biercake
* Coffee Maple Walnut Cake
* Devilish Angel Food Cake

The index includes the liqueurs and other booze so if you have leftover rum and want to use it in a dessert, you can quickly determine your options (there are 11, including beverages). You can also look up the type of dessert (such as pies or puddings).
The author includes the formulas for metric conversions (ounces to grams, pounds to grams, cups to liters, and Farenheit to Centigrade). She also provides quick reference charts of metric equivalents for volume (from 1/8 teaspoon to 1 gallon), oven temperatures, length (1/4 inch to 15 inches), and weight (1 ounce to 1 pound) as well as for butter (2 teaspoons to ½ pound).
My only suggestion for improvement would have been to include more photos of the finished desserts. Only 28 of the 75 dessert recipes (and 5 of the 25 drink recipes) included photos (which were full page, color and well-styled).
This was a fun read and I am looking forward to baking several of the treats to liven up my next office potluck.
If you like this book, you might want to check out Booze Cakes: Confections Spiked With Spirits, Wine, and Beer which has a similar fun tone and concentrates on cakes infused with liquor.The Boozy Baker: 75 Recipes for Spirited Sweets Overview

Small-Batch Baking: When Just Enough for 1 or 2. . . Is Just Enough ReviewOkay, so I love to bake. Unfortunately, there are only two people in my household and both of us have, um, "portion control problems".
Since most of my favorite cookie recipes yield several dozen and making just PART of a cake is nearly impossible, my boyfriend and I often end up eating way more than we actually want. Sometimes I'll try to pass off my baked goods to co-workers, but (and I'm being painfully honest here) I usually polish off the batch myself in less than 3 days.
I know all that sugar is no good for me, but I can't imagine not having cakes and cookies once in a while. Life's too short to cut out something I enjoy so much!
When I came across this book, it was like I stumbled across a puzzle piece I hadn't noticed was missing. The cake recipes make single or double servings! The cookie recipies make less than a dozen! I've tried cutting regular recipes in half, but the results are never quite right. With this book, you're measuring ingredients in tablespoons instead cups, and the two recipes I've tried have turned out beautifully.
The peanut butter cookie recipe made 8 perfect cookies and tonight I tried a recipe for two giant oatmeal cookies. Perfect again. I can't wait to try to make the small cakes, little breads and even a baby Baklava!
I expect that this book will change the way I bake forever. It's nice to make a dessert that I can enjoy without feeling like a jerk for enjoying way too much of it.Small-Batch Baking: When Just Enough for 1 or 2. . . Is Just Enough Overview

Everyone loves how cute the cake poss are. So many good ideas in the book. I cant wait to try them all. Detailed instruction and pictures make them easy to make, the end product will look amazing! Presented by Southern Living Big Book of Cupcakes: 150 Brilliantly Delicious Dreamcakes ReviewI am a pastry chef and I own 300 cookbooks. You would think that little would impress me. You would be wrong. Jan Moon's Big Book of Cupcakes is so much more than I ever thought it would be I barely flipped through the pages before buying it and rushing home. Now that I have had time to live with it and love it I am more impressed than ever.
Moon walks you through 150 different cupcakes. Often, these are combinations of cake flavor, filling, frosting, and then decorations. She uses bases to spring into the stratosphere of creativity. Chocolate Chocolate Chunk? Mojito? Banana Split? Sign me up! I want to make every cupcake in here! Not only will the recipes get you drooling but all the cakes look brilliant and beautiful as well. She also includes a feature called Flip It which gives you ideas on how to alter the cupcakes for a different presentation, flavor tweak, etc. It is helpful and gets your creativity running. Moon also divides her book into helpful sections, which are:
* Cupcakes 101
* Spring Fever
* Summer Celebrations
* Fall Follies
* Winter Wonders
* Cupcakes for Sharing
* Resources
There are also an introduction and index. Cupcakes 101 is great because if you are someone who has never really baked, or are giving this as a gift to someone who does not have a ton of kitchen experience it is very helpful. If you are an accomplished baker or chef, skip that part or flip through it, then get on to the recipes.
The only thing I hate about this book is I cannot figure out which ones to do first! I love this book so much, and trying to decide is sweet, wonderful torture.
Highest possible recommendations. This blows away Martha Stewarts' cupcakes any day!Presented by Southern Living Big Book of Cupcakes: 150 Brilliantly Delicious Dreamcakes Overview

The Icing on the Cake (True Vows) Review"The Icing on the Cake" is the delightfully romantic new novel from Alison Kent. I adore Alison Kent's novels. They're fun, flirty, sincere and oh-so-romantic. When I read that Alison was actually writing the first reality-based romance novel, I was intrigued, but not necessarily in a good way. I don't really care for reality TV and knowing that the characters I was reading about are actual people? Not my first choice in a novel, but I had faith in Alison's writing so in I went... And there I stayed. Each chapter starts with one of the cupcake descriptions that Michelle and Todd actually use in their cupcakery. Delicious, tantalizing names and flavors met me with each turn in the story. Oh, how I wished I lived in Washington, D.C. rather than Central Ohio! But Todd's from Central Ohio and it was a treat seeing my hometown featured during several scenes. Details like that drew me in and kept me reading.
Honestly, it took me a lot longer to finish the book than I expected. I'm a voracious reader and while Alison's writing and the story progression kept me hooked, real life (I'm mom to three kids, six and under) got in the way. I realized that if it weren't for Alison's fantastic writing, I would still be working my way through the book instead of hiding under the covers with a flashlight at night so I don't wake anyone up. But flashlight in hand, I loved reading this sweet romance.
And the "eh" feeling about reading a story based on real people? Gone. Every romance has a Happily Ever After ending and it was a pleasure to read about how two regular people can find an extraordinary connection that's real. Like FOR REAL. Not all Happily Ever Afters start with flashes and bangs and loud choruses of angels announcing the Fall In Love moment. Many start - and stay - just as Michelle and Todd started their story... with friendship, taking a chance, and seeing where life leads.
The only thing that would make this book better would be to have one of Michelle and Todd's cupcakes included. :)The Icing on the Cake (True Vows) Overview

Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World: 75 Dairy-Free Recipes for Cupcakes that Rule ReviewI love love LOVE this book. The recipes are simple and perfect, every time; I have had VCTOtW for about a month and a half now, and despite at least weekly bakings, haven't had a single recipe fail yet. Not one. Since I bought it I seriously can't stop baking and am beginning to fear for my waistline!
I would like to second another reviewer who pointed out that the recipes don't ask you to use egg replacers or other "substitutions" common in vegan baking (usually because someone is trying to veganize a non-vegan recipe); instead, the recipes are just designed vegan from the ground up, and call for simple ingredients that anyone would have (oil, baking powder, etc.). Also, there are tons of beautiful color pictures of finished cupcakes throughout, which is one of the most important things about a cookbook, to me. Then, too, they suggest enough variations on each cupcake recipe (there's 6 suggested ways to dramatically alter the chocolate cupcake recipe alone) that this book will keep you occupied for quite a long time.
Since every baker likes a little external validation, here's mine: I have gotten absolute raves on every cupcake I have made so far, and most of these raves were from non-vegans who were comparing my vegan cupcakes with regular [non-vegan] cupcakes. For example, last night I fed a chocolate cupcake with cookies 'n cream frosting (vegan buttercream frosting with Newman's O's mixed in... this is a recipe from the book, obviously) to a friend who didn't just enjoy it, but was absolutely WOWED. "Geeze, it's amazing what they're doing without dairy or eggs these days; these are better than regular cupcakes" was one comment that I particularly appreciated because most vegan desserts can taste good, but in my experience it's the rare vegan dessert that can taste identical or even BETTER than the regular omni thing.
I would recommend this book to anyone, vegans and omni's alike, because even if you're not vegan (or lactose intolerant), the cupcakes taste fabulous. The recipes are so simple they're basically idiot-proof, and I have seriously never in my life had better chocolate cupcakes than the ones I made from this book: moist and fluffy and ooh... just perfect. And I'm not even a chocolate person.
Anyway, do yourself (and everyone in your life who will be eating your baked goods) a favor and buy this wonderful book! I'd give it 10 stars if they'd let me...Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World: 75 Dairy-Free Recipes for Cupcakes that Rule Overview

The Icing on the Cupcake: A Novel ReviewAnsley Waller just had a really bad night. Dumped by her fiancé and humiliated in from of her sorority sisters, she decides to head to New York and move in with her wealthy grandmother Vivian, who's been estranged from the family since she abandoned Ansley's mother at the tender age of five. But regardless of her mother's opposition, Ansley needs a place to lick her wounds and determines that now is as good a time as ever to reconcile with a grandmother she never knew. Both apprehensive, the two women begin to bond over their shared love for baking. But Vivian's keeping some secrets of her own while dealing with an IRS investigation into her late husband's investments that could cost her everything.
When Vivian insists that Ansley get a job or be sent back home with her tail between her legs, she decides to play to her strengths and open her own cupcake shop. Determined to prove she can make it on her own, Ansley, using recipes from a book that's been passed down for generations in their family discovers that it just may hold the key to the secrets of Vivian's past.
THE ICING ON THE CUPCAKE is a charming story, thick with Texas charm and baking anecdotes. Ross does a beautiful job of developing her characters and creating suspense surrounding the mystery of how any mother could leave their five-year-old child. You'll root for Ansley as she struggles to figure out what to do with her life now that becoming a privileged housewife is not an option any longer and your mouth will water as she stress-bakes her way through her troubles. A lovely novel with a decadent recipe at the end of each chapter, I have a feeling you'll find THE ICING ON THE CUPCAKE as sweet as I did.The Icing on the Cupcake: A Novel Overview

Cookie Dough or Die (Wheeler Large Print Cozy Mystery) ReviewOlivia Greyson is the owner of The Gingerbread House which occupies the first floor of her Victorian home in Chatterley Heights. It is a shop that features cookie cutters and other baking items. Olivia lives upstairs with her tiny dog Spunky. Olivia (Livie) and her friend Maddie run the shop and Maddie bakes and creates the most yummy cookies. Olivia gets to be close friends with prominent Chatterley Heights citizen and business woman Clarisse Chamberlain who also has a passion for cookie cutters. She often helped out at Livie's shop and gave her business advice.
No one it town is more shocked than Livie when she learns of Clarisse's death. The sheriff calls it an accident, maybe suicide, but Livie can't wrap her head around those ideas. Clarisse was too meticulous and too strong, neither of these options fit. She knows Clarisse had something on her mind of late but until Livie can figure out what that was she can't be sure, but her gut is telling her this was not an accident. Some one killed Clarisse Chamberlain and she is going to find out who before the last cookie crumbles.
I really liked this story. It is a wonderful debut to what I am sure will be a wonderful series. Cozy mysteries are my favorites and I am continually amazed by the variety of settings used for each series. A simple cookie cutter shop is an excellent setting and I can see many possibilities for future mysteries.
The foundation has been well laid in this first story. Letting us get to know just enough about they main characters to want us to keep reading more about them to learn who they are below the surface. The supporting characters in this story were fun, quirky, opinionated, smart, and witty. I hope they are around in future installments.
This is not only a new series but a new author. An author I can't find anything about. Not a web page, a Facebook page or email. Leads me to wonder if this is a new author or an author we already know using a pseudonym. If Virginia Lowell is indeed a brand new author, this is an excellent written mystery for a debut. I hope we can learn more about her in the future and that she continues to write books as good as this one. Through my research I did find out that book two in this series A Cookie Before Dying is slated to be released December 6, 2011.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Berkley Prime Crime, A Division of the Penguin Group. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Cupcake Company ReviewDo NOT buy this book..what a rip off. ($25 for 1/4" worth of NOTHING!) Mostly what you will get is basic common sense in running any business..that they took and TRIED to apply to the cupcake business. I am a pastry chef with experience in the field and I can tell you the numbers DO NOT and WILL NOT add up. I actually went back to see when it was published.. the costs were so below reality. What a pathetic book.. this publisher obviously just takes a basic business concept and TRIES to make it apply to a business they know NOTHING about to sell books. I seriously could have written a better one myself with more pertinent information for success. Buy a good business plan software and you'll get more out of it. Business Plan Pro has a great set up they walk you through. I was looking for more detail (marketing, bookkeeping, etc..) in this book... only to find it just SKIMS the surface in any area. Equiptment costs are a joke.. so UNREALISTIC! No contact info for suppliers, etc.. useless! If your curious..skim it through in a bookstore.. and see for yourself. Don't waste your money. Might be good for a kindergartener wanting to sell cupcakes instead of lemonade from their front yard.Cupcake Company Overview

Who You Callin' Cupcake: 75 In-Your-Face Recipes that Reinvent the Cupcake ReviewI was excited to get this cookbook until i noticed several errors throughout.
For example: 12 Lemon cupcakes are supposed to come from 8 cups of flour and
8 eggs. Clearly, this is way off. Another recipe for Chocolate Sponge is supposed
to yield 12 cupcakes, calling for 20 eggs. These recipes call for 2 teaspoons
of salt for 12 cupcakes which can't be correct either.
If you read the recipes, clearly the author put her soul into this book. There are nice distressed style
pictures for most of the cupcakes which is awesome. She is clearly passionate
about her work, and wanted to share that with the readers, however, that just didn't translate
into making sure the recipes were in correct proportions before printing. And since most
of the recipes rely upon the master recipes in the beginning of the book which have incorrect
proportions, it makes the rest of the recipes not work and it also makes you worried to trust
the rest of the recipes as well.
The author's facebook page
shows that they are claiming that altitude, over mixing and lack of use of organic ingredients
is the culprit for people's failed recipes when clearly that has nothing to do with , the fact
that the proportions are way off. 2 teaspoons of salt for 12 cupcakes with 1 2/3 cups of
flour tastes horrible whether your are 200 feet above or below sea level, whether you over
or under mixed it or it's organic.
The author submitted her recipes to the publisher in grams and the
publisher failed to convert them correctly. Be that as it may, what happened
to the proof copy author's get before the book goes to print, or at least an attempt
to make an errata page.The author posted 1 fix, for the basic vanilla cupcakes in grams, using Evaporated Can juice about a month ago. Most people can't get that ingredient. The author has known for several weeks that the proportions are way off and has made no attempt to make an errata page for any of the examples I named above which are clearly wrong. The author also suggests that
people wait for the NEXT printing of the book. Given the sloppy way this book has been handled who would trust the author or publisher at this point to try "revised" recipes.
It appears that most of those who are giving this book 5 stars have made no attempt
to actually bake any of the recipes apparent from them saying things like "i can't wait to try them". I did try to bake the Vanilla Cupcakes, which were good
but I had enough basic understanding and experience not to put 2 teaspoons of salt and the enormous amount of baking powder she suggests. My own changes made an excellent cupcake.
Most who rated this book 5 stars are die hard fans of her baked goods from her bakery and from seeing her on TV.If you are going to use this cookbook, you'll need your own basic recipes for the Vanilla and Chocolate Cupcakes, and only rely on this book for ideas. It is not uncommon
to find cookbooks with some errors, but sheer number of these egregious errors show a lack
care taken in publishing this book, on top of the author not fixing more than 1 recipe.
UPDATE: 9-25-10 I noticed that FINALLY after three months of knowing the recipes were wrong, the publisher and author placed a number of "fixed" recipes up on this page and F.B. This was a super slow response to the bombard of personal e-mails, phone calls to the bakery, and requests on her f.book page the author rejected responding to, despite constant complaints by purchasers that the recipes were not correct. I tried the updated Vanilla Bean Cupcakes TWICE and both times they came out super dry and rough although they did not sink in the middle like her original recipes . I have catered desserts for over 10 years, and do extremely well, and I certainly know my way around making excellent baked goods. Her updated recipe just didn't cut the mustard. They may have changed the recipes , but failed to test them. Surprise, surprise.
I really really wanted these updates to work, but given the way this whole thing was handled i'm not stunned to find these barely mediocre stand-ins doled out as fixes. This book is best used for ideas only. Forget the recipes, and save your ingredients because updated or not the authors recipes just don't measure up. Sometimes people can be so offended that their hard work is being critzied so negatively that they refuse to accept responsiblity. This was apparent by her not "fixing" things for 3 months and offering blaims instead as well as the F.B chatter that erupted so badly that she deleted some of it. The result is that they put a lack luster effort into fixing things they didn't think were a problem in the 1st place. Bottom line, the fixes just don't taste good. It's a shame because she worked really really hard in visual presentation, but there was just too much carelessness in the execution of translating of the actual recipes themselves from bakery to home versions. Some things are a little more than converting numbers.Who You Callin' Cupcake: 75 In-Your-Face Recipes that Reinvent the Cupcake Overview

The Buttercup Bake Shop Cookbook: More Than 80 Recipes for Irresistible, Old-Fashioned Treats ReviewI agree with the first reviewer of this book that the key word here is "old fashioned." These are the desserts that you turn to when you want something warm and familiar, and that'll settle into your stomach with a delightful plop.
Right from the start, the author makes it clear that all her desserts are made from scratch with whole milk, real butter, and white sugar. While die-hard health buffs might scream at the thought of no low-fat anything in this book, most dessert lovers like me revel in the Red Velvet Cake, Banana Cream Pudding (presented in a most novel way!), Oatmeal Butterscotch Cookies, cupcakes, and Rice Crispies Treats, which, (for me) was a hard to find recipe until I bought this book.
This book is simple pleasure and it takes you back to the joy of baking. There are no fancy, gravity-defying desserts here - just sheer delicious desserts you can make at home.The Buttercup Bake Shop Cookbook: More Than 80 Recipes for Irresistible, Old-Fashioned Treats Overview
