The Whimsical Bakehouse: Fun-to-Make Cakes That Taste as Good as They Look ReviewThis book's ONLY lack is its shortness. I wanted a few hundred more pages of ideas. However, despite its brevity the book is absolutely chock-full of ideas most of which seem obvious in retrospect but I would never have thought of (a deliberately tilted cake?).
Its strengths:
(1) the recipes are really, really good. Those who remember the old Wilton cake decorating books will understand why I say that this is not always common in books about decorating cakes.
(2) the photos illustrate creative use of color and the text contains charts to explain how to reproduce the effects and generate similar ones on one's own, using the different types of food coloring available, the pros and cons of which are clearly explained.
(3) the text explains clearly how to use "wafer chocolate," which is really a malleable and dyeable form of white chocolate, for truly stunning effects.
(4) children _love_ the cakes. My five-old-daughter grabbed this book, studied it cover-to-cover, and then asked me to read it out loud to her. She will actually sit for fifteen minutes listening intently to a description of how to construct the cakes that she likes.
This really is a generous book. The cakes are spectacular enough that the authors probably could have found some way to franchise or trademark their designs and thereby made a lot of money. Perhaps they will make a lot of money selling copies of this book (I hope so) but the information is free if you check the book out of the library. They explain enough of their methods that we all can make cakes in our kitchens that make us laugh out loud. My main and only problem of the book is where is the "budget" aspect of the book as it says in the title. They offer numerous and helpful tips and advice about planning a wedding, even an elegant wedding. But for those actually looking for advice on keeping a wedding under a limited budget, this isn't the book. For real and practical budget advice, I recomend Bridal Bargains by D. The Butch Bakery Cookbook ReviewFeaturing super sized cupcakes with big bold flavors and and chock full of sports motifs, this book will definitely draw the men into the kitchen. The photographs are beautiful and the directions are easy. Purists might take issue with the measuring technique (using the same cup for both wet and dry ingredients). The recipes will make either 12 supersized cakes or 16 regular sized. The flavor combos are bold with many featuring alcohol-- rum raisin,mojito, beer.
But the real proof is in the proveribial pudding. So far I have made four of the recipes with mixed results. The red velvet "Defense Defense" was delish, good cocoa flavor and a vivid red color. The Jack Daniels spiked cream cheese frosting definitely enhanced the cupcake. The" Rum and Coke" cupcake was tasty, almost like a sponge cake. The "Wake-Up Call", a chocolate expresso cupcake was a delight. The coffee complimented the chocolate and the texture was nice. The "Serious Coffee Buttercream" made it a mocha explosion. The "Triple Play," a chocolate cupcake with a chocolate ganache was a total disaster. The cupcake had a weird texture, kind of like eating a drying sponge. The flavor was flat despite use of copious amounts of high quality chocolate.
The amount of frosting generated bythese recipes is excessive. I found that halving the frosting recipe helped. I did not like the last chapter which relied on boxed cake mixes. No I am not a semi homemade type of girl. I would have preferred the baking tips been presented in all one area rather than scattered throughout the book. Some of them, like the substitutions for cake flour, were difficult to locate.
This is a basic book but lots of lfun. The flavors are interestiing and assertive and a good waya to lure the men into the kitchen.The Butch Bakery Cookbook Overview

Cupcakes from the Primrose Bakery ReviewThis is seriously one of the very best cookbooks for baking cupcakes that I have ever purchased. One of my daughters loves to bake and decorate cupcakes, and found this book at our local library. Once I looked through it, I knew it was a book I had to buy. It was written by two moms from the U.K., and the recipes are simple, and wholesome, yet the finished products have a stylish look to them. I love the photographs in this book, they are very "vintage", and really accentuate the beautiful simplicity of the baked goods. The book came in pristine condition, as have all of the books I have ordered directly from Amazon.
