The Treats Truck Baking Book: Cookies, Brownies & Goodies Galore ReviewAs a former resident of NYC, and a former weekly visitor to Sugar (a.k.a. the Treats Truck) I've been waiting impatiently for this book to come out. While baking Kim's treats myself will never be as fun as compulsively checking her location on Twitter and bouncing up to the truck's counter, it's the next best thing.
First and foremost, the recipes are spot-on. I'm not an accomplished baker, so I appreciate the tips sprinkled throughout the book. She clearly states which ingredients she uses, like unsalted butter, dark brown sugar, whole milk and large eggs. This is helpful as I don't know, for example, the difference between light brown sugar and dark brown sugar, and I find these distinctions are not always specified in other cookbooks. To date, I've made my three favorite treats: oatmeal jammies (with apricot jam), coconut macaroons, and cran-almond crispies. Prep was quick and uncomplicated, the recipe lists straightforward, and most importantly, all three turned out perfectly. I like the approach to baking as something that should be fun, simple and delicious. I also see a lot of mix-and-match options riffing off the basic recipes, which I think gives a lot of bang for your buck.
Second, the design is just terrific. Echoing a previous reviewer, props to Harper Collins for publishing a cookbook that clearly breaks through a sea of sameness in an over-saturated cookbook market. It is Kim's and the Treats Truck's philosophy to the core; anything less colorful, less quirky or less fun would have been an injustice to the Treats Truck brand. It's well laid out and the print is easy-to-read and follow. The illustrations are particularly charming; clearly the designer put a lot of love into this book and it shows.
I had a lot of expectations for this cookbook and they've all been surpassed. I plan to give out copies of this book, accompanied by a batch of oatmeal jammies, as holiday hostess gifts.The Treats Truck Baking Book: Cookies, Brownies & Goodies Galore Overview

Southern Cakes: Sweet and Irresistible Recipes for Everyday Celebrations ReviewThe receipes in this book are the cakes that my grandmother made when I was a child. I can remember her in the kitchen baking all day and then placing a towel on the counter and displaying all her baked cakes for our family. The photography in this book is awesome. From the coconut cake on the cover to the buttermilk cake is a replicate of the real thing. The receipes are easy to follow and well written. If you love the southern heritage of cakes made by your grandmother or your mom, you'll find them all in this wonderful book. I found the ingredients to be readily available in my pantry and the stories about each recipe add to the interesting reading. Sweet Auburn Desserts: Atlanta's "Little Bakery That Could" ReviewGot this book at a independent bookseller in Savannah, GA a few weeks ago and just fell in love with the recipes, the chef, and the cuisine. Sweet potato cheesecake? You have got to try it - fantastic! The recipe shown on the cover with all the layers of strawberries and flat cakes is superb! We swung by Atlanta recently on a trip and went to the bakery to meet Chef Sonya and it was very much worth the trouble! She sat with us and talked about her recipes, her momma, and she was truly interested in our cooking. Highly recommend this book and if you have a chance to meet the author - do it! The Butch Bakery Cookbook ReviewFeaturing super sized cupcakes with big bold flavors and and chock full of sports motifs, this book will definitely draw the men into the kitchen. The photographs are beautiful and the directions are easy. Purists might take issue with the measuring technique (using the same cup for both wet and dry ingredients). The recipes will make either 12 supersized cakes or 16 regular sized. The flavor combos are bold with many featuring alcohol-- rum raisin,mojito, beer.
But the real proof is in the proveribial pudding. So far I have made four of the recipes with mixed results. The red velvet "Defense Defense" was delish, good cocoa flavor and a vivid red color. The Jack Daniels spiked cream cheese frosting definitely enhanced the cupcake. The" Rum and Coke" cupcake was tasty, almost like a sponge cake. The "Wake-Up Call", a chocolate expresso cupcake was a delight. The coffee complimented the chocolate and the texture was nice. The "Serious Coffee Buttercream" made it a mocha explosion. The "Triple Play," a chocolate cupcake with a chocolate ganache was a total disaster. The cupcake had a weird texture, kind of like eating a drying sponge. The flavor was flat despite use of copious amounts of high quality chocolate.
The amount of frosting generated bythese recipes is excessive. I found that halving the frosting recipe helped. I did not like the last chapter which relied on boxed cake mixes. No I am not a semi homemade type of girl. I would have preferred the baking tips been presented in all one area rather than scattered throughout the book. Some of them, like the substitutions for cake flour, were difficult to locate.
This is a basic book but lots of lfun. The flavors are interestiing and assertive and a good waya to lure the men into the kitchen.The Butch Bakery Cookbook Overview
