The Brooklyn Cookbook (Knopf Cooks American) ReviewIn addition to the fact that the recipes work and are delicious, the best thing about this book was that it traced the ethnic roots of the many diverse cultures that made Brooklyn a true melting pot. I grew up in Fort Greene/Clinton Hill and that book brought me back home for a little while longer. Reading the stories that accompanied each of the recipes, I was again transported to the experiences and landmarks of my childhood and that of my parents - football weddings, the Botanical Garden, Junior's, Jahn's Ice Cream Parlor,Ebinger's Bakery, Bamonte's Restaurant, the Garden Room at Abraham and Straus, weekend picnics at Crestwood Lake. I could almost hear Aunt Jennie and my mother arguing over whose cooking most closely resembled their mother's (it was my mother, although Aunt Jennie wielded a mean fusilli rod!!) More importantly, I found myself immersed again in the sense of family and community that are my home borough - a sense that transcends every ethnic background. It was fun, poignant and tasty! I have given this book to friends as gifts over the past few years and everyone loved it. Only one criticism. In the section on Cammereri's Bakery, with the references to the movie Moonstruck, Gilberto Godoy (the real life bakery owner), did not play Ronnie Cammereri. Nicolas Cage played Ronnie, one of the starring roles. Given the popularity of the movie, that was probably the one item that should have been absolutely correct. The Brooklyn Cookbook (Knopf Cooks American) Overview

Junior's Dessert Cookbook: 75 Recipes for Cheesecakes, Pies, Cookies, Cakes, and More ReviewThe recipes in this cookbook look wonderful. Most call for ingredients that are easily attainable by the average consumer. I wish that there was a picture with each recipe. Many pages are filled with narratives and stories about the company, the family or the origin of the recipe. I would prefer a photo so that I know if my dish looks like it is supposed to look.Junior's Dessert Cookbook: 75 Recipes for Cheesecakes, Pies, Cookies, Cakes, and More Overview

Junior's Cheesecake Cookbook: 50 To-Die-For Recipes for New York-Style Cheesecake ReviewWhen it comes to the United States, New York seems THE place to live and eat!! From yet another delicious food emporium, comes a new classic to place on your bookshelf. I can't believe it was possible to come up with cheesecake recipes that could beat any of the usual tasty standards, but to my fellow cheeseheads, this is it!! I have already made several for my family and friends, and they have all raved over the taste and texture.
The book is a heavy ode to that lovely brick of cheese that can make the pickiest tastebud take notice. The physical layout of the book itself reminds you of the old soda parlors with it glossy cover of bright white and dairy-red color, then it draws you into it's pages with sharp, clear photography. One of the pleasant surprises contained are the sidebars of hints and suggestions for making these cakes the finest in texture and flavor. They begin with the essentials of cheesecake baking with every detail covered to ensure your success from the right type of cream cheese needed to the pans to bake them in, to water baths to ensure their creaminess. Then they begin with the fabulous recipes. The writing is straight and simple for the home baker, yet professional enough for an accomplished baker. And by the way, realize that these are not for the dieting, health-conscious, low-fat eater; more for those who wisely have a pair of elastic waist pants.
Junior's is a family restaurant in Brooklyn, New York that opened in the 1950's, though it acutally got started several decades earlier, under another form of restaurant, by Grandpa Henry Rosen around 1929. It was in the 50's, that the official Junior's was christened. This wonderful story of family, dedication, and hard work is just part of the threads of history that are woven into the story of Junior's in the first section. The book breaks down into:

A Passion for Baking: Bake to celebrate, Bake to nourish, Bake for fun ReviewI have Marcy Goldman's two previous books and I can only say she gets better with each effort. This one is truly magnificent- filled to the rooftops with glorious photos that you want to devour themselves! But the recipes? This is a totally awesome, instant classic baking book. Each recipe features that trademark Goldman creative baking style she showcases at her site (www.BetterBaking.com) and yet each one as easy as pie. This is NOT your average baking book (it also lies flat on the counter- Yea!) but it certainly is for all levels of bakers. Where else could you find grainy/healthy/decadent/holiday (she has one definitive recipe for each holiday) and even a quick baking chapter. This book is worth its weight in gold for the biscotti and cheesecake chapters alone. I know- I have already mailed out by-request biscotti from coast to coast and made her Chocolate Eruption Cheesecake, not once, but twice. Wherever I go- I am, thanks to this book, the most-requested guest. Recipes are worth every extra mile around the running track! Marcy- you've outdone yourself this time!A Passion for Baking: Bake to celebrate, Bake to nourish, Bake for fun Overview

The SoNo Baking Company Cookbook: The Best Sweet and Savory Recipes for Every Occasion ReviewI purchased this book after seeing the author on Martha Stewart. This will be the third book I've purchased in a 6 month time frame after seeing the author on her show.
Let me start out by saying the photos for this book were very well done. They are so enticing they make you want to bake something.
Whenever I purchase a new book I start out with something simple. In this case I tried the Irish Soda Bread. The recipe required 4 tablespoons and 2 teaspoons of instant dry yeast for 6 cups of bread flour. I thought the ratio of yeast for this amount of flour was a lot but followed the recipe instructions.
The result was not good, the bread had a strong yeast taste and was dry. The recipe also called for raisins which offered not very much to the taste, as the yeast was overwhelming. Also, the instructions indicated to bake at 400 degrees F for about 1 hour, mine was done in 40 minutes.
I'm willing to try another recipe from this book and hoping that the measurements for the yeast was an error.
There are a lot of recipes in this book that you will typically find in a good baking book, that also covers ingredients, equipment and storage.
The recipe contents are quick breads (muffins, scones, pastries), cookies, brownies and bars, pies and tarts, cobblers, crisps and buckles, trifles, mousses, and pudding, cakes breads and foccias and savories. The SoNo Baking Company Cookbook: The Best Sweet and Savory Recipes for Every Occasion Overview

Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook Review*EDITED*
There have been a number of mixed reviews about this book - in fact, there're quite a few negative ones that almost put me off trying to make anything from the recipes. I really wanted to know if this book was worth anything so I decided to prove it to myself. I am a decent baker; that is to say, I taught myself to cook and bake on a regular basis (often with good success!) but have no real culinary skills or knowledge. However, I do spend enough time in the kitchen to notice that the methods for doing various things in this book is quite different from most recipes that are commonly used. For example, the methods for mixing the cake mixture in Vanilla Cupcakes provide that you first combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and a bit of milk in one bowl; and some eggs, milk and vanilla extract in the other. Once thoroughly incorporated, the book tells you to mix the two together. Now, most recipes would ask you to first beat the egg and sugar in one bowl, add the milk and vanilla, follow by the dry ingredients. But I decided to stick closely to the recipes provided - using whatever amount of ingredients (which may seem "ridiculous" to many people) that the book suggests, and have my fingers crossed. The results? Well, the cupcake recipes (vanilla, chocolate and the velvet cupcakes) that I've attempted so far have turned out pretty good! They're all very tasty and do not appear to be "dry" or "inedible" in any way. My guess is that for those of you who are rather experienced would question the validity of the recipes and so instead of sticking to the book, would be tempted to do "what they think is best" - which is probably why there're more experienced bakers complaining about their various failures, etc. So my advice is for you to turn blind eyes and ears and just follow the recipes to the letter, even though your experience and "instinct" are telling you otherwise!
***The book itself is simply beautiful. It is well laid-out, divided into several sections like cakes, pies, tarts, cookies, etc. The recipes include: the basic vanilla/chocolate cupcakes, lemon cupcakes, red velvet cupcakes, strawberry cheesecake cupcakes, lavender cupcakes, hazelnut and chocolate cupcakes, coconut and pineapple cupcakes, banana and chocolate cupcakes, pumpkin cupcakes, marshmallow cupcakes, ginger cupcakes, hummingbird cake, carrot cake, brooklyn blackout cake, coffee cake, blueberry cake, spiced pound cake, banana bread, nutty apple loaf lemon loaf, New York cheesecake, icebox banana cheesecake, lemon meringue pie, pecan pie, pumpkin pie, mississippi mud pie, apple pie, brownies, muesli bars, rocky road bars, ham and mushroom muffins, spinach and cheese muffins, blueberry muffins, banana and cinnamon muffins, chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cookies, white chocolate and pecan cookies, oatmeal raisin cookies, and gingerbread men. The photographs are all stunning, you get to see exactly what your cakes should look like.***
However, I must say that since I own over 200 books on cakes, cookies, ice cream and desserts, this book doesn't give you a very wide range of recipes - hence why I've given it 4 stars. The book is quite thin and it does have "enough" to keep you entertained for a while, but I prefer to have more choices so I usually have several books on very specific subjects. For example, if you're looking for a good book on cookies, I'd recommend "Martha Steward's Cookies", "The Good Cookie" and "Great Cookies"; for cakes, I'd recommend "Mary Berry's Ultimate Cake Book" and "Southern Cakes"; for cupcakes, I'd recommend "Cupcake Heaven", "The Crabapple Bakery Cupcake" and "Cupcakes: Luscious Bakeshop Favorites"; for general baking/desserts "Desserts by the Yard", "Maida Heatter's Book of Great Desserts", "Jim Fobel's Old-fashioned Baking Book"; for ice cream "Ices", "The Ultimate Book of Ice Cream", "The Perfect Scoops"; and for chocolate, I'd recommend "The Essence of Chocolate" and "Maida Heatter's Book of Great Chocolate Desserts".
Overall, if you're truly passionate about cakes and are NOT looking for "healthy" cakes (whatever that means!), you'll love this book. It'll be a great addition to your cook book collection, although I wouldn't say that this will be the ONLY book you'll need, because the book just simply doesn't offer enough varieties in the long-run. I've also been to the bakeries in London and I am happy to announce that my most recent batch did taste rather closely similar to the "real" things! I can assure you that this book will give you some great ideas and the pictures will be able to keep you coming back to the book time and time again!
Recommended.
P.S. I've also noticed that a few people have been comparing this book with Magnolia Bakery Book. I own all of them (2 by Magnolia, 2 by Buttercup Bakeshop and The Hummingbird Bakery) - and I'd NEVER pick the Buttercup Bakeshop over the other two. In fact, The Hummingbird bakery book actually contains MORE cupcakes recipes than those Magnolia books! It should also be noted that none of these books offer "healthy" goodies! Have fun baking!Hummingbird Bakery Cookbook Overview
