Bread on Arrival (St. Martin's Minotaur Mysteries) ReviewAnother great example of the writing by Lou Jane Temple. Heaven Lee is cooking again -- this time she is making bread, not bbq. The Kansas City restaurant owner is involved with the ARTOS (bread) convention come to town. Little did she know that death would be served up along with the breadsticks.
Another great Heaven Lee mystery. Wonderful recipies are also included in the book. Temple's previous book introduced you to the main characters contained in this recent release, however, the book is written well enough to stand on its own without reading the previous 4 works from this author.
In the style of Diane Mott Davidson and Tamara Meyers -- a great culinary read.

Sweet's Sweets: The Second Samantha Sweet Mystery (The Samantha Sweet) ReviewAfter reading a review stating this book contained "santanic ritual" I wondered if the author had decided to veer away from the delicious recipe for her first Samantha Sweet book. Instead I found myself feasting on her likeable characters and enticing storyline. In my opinion, the worst thing about this book is the cravings I'm still fighting after finishing it... Amaretto Cheesecake, Pumpkin Cake with cream cheese filling and chocolate ganache icing, and every chocolate confection imaginable! However, if you are a person who thinks a DREAM of standing in a red room "with strange white symbols painted" on the walls and being told "Your strength will not fail you and many good things will come to you" describes a "satanic ritual", you should probably save your money. Cookie Dough or Die (Wheeler Large Print Cozy Mystery) ReviewOlivia Greyson is the owner of The Gingerbread House which occupies the first floor of her Victorian home in Chatterley Heights. It is a shop that features cookie cutters and other baking items. Olivia lives upstairs with her tiny dog Spunky. Olivia (Livie) and her friend Maddie run the shop and Maddie bakes and creates the most yummy cookies. Olivia gets to be close friends with prominent Chatterley Heights citizen and business woman Clarisse Chamberlain who also has a passion for cookie cutters. She often helped out at Livie's shop and gave her business advice.
No one it town is more shocked than Livie when she learns of Clarisse's death. The sheriff calls it an accident, maybe suicide, but Livie can't wrap her head around those ideas. Clarisse was too meticulous and too strong, neither of these options fit. She knows Clarisse had something on her mind of late but until Livie can figure out what that was she can't be sure, but her gut is telling her this was not an accident. Some one killed Clarisse Chamberlain and she is going to find out who before the last cookie crumbles.
I really liked this story. It is a wonderful debut to what I am sure will be a wonderful series. Cozy mysteries are my favorites and I am continually amazed by the variety of settings used for each series. A simple cookie cutter shop is an excellent setting and I can see many possibilities for future mysteries.
The foundation has been well laid in this first story. Letting us get to know just enough about they main characters to want us to keep reading more about them to learn who they are below the surface. The supporting characters in this story were fun, quirky, opinionated, smart, and witty. I hope they are around in future installments.
This is not only a new series but a new author. An author I can't find anything about. Not a web page, a Facebook page or email. Leads me to wonder if this is a new author or an author we already know using a pseudonym. If Virginia Lowell is indeed a brand new author, this is an excellent written mystery for a debut. I hope we can learn more about her in the future and that she continues to write books as good as this one. Through my research I did find out that book two in this series A Cookie Before Dying is slated to be released December 6, 2011.

Cream Puff Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) ReviewI have been a fan of this series since the beginning and have faithfully read each and every one of them as they are published. It's one of my favorites and I look forward to settling in with Hannah and her friends and family as well as having a mystery mixed in for good measure.
This one was different for me. The first 100 pages or so I was really enjoying the book. Definitely a "cozy" story since no murder had been committed yet. I was appreciating getting caught up with the characters from the previous novels and zipped right along. Around page 110 things started deteriorating. The mystery portion was introduced and I thought it was fairly weak. Lots of unrealistic situations occur to the point of spoiling it. All cozies have bits of reality that you have to ignore, but this one pushed it past acceptable. All of the police department's detectives are unable to work the case for some reason or another, so they decide to have a cookie shop owner run the police investigation? It's one thing for a mystery to revolve around a person sticking their nose in where it doesn't belong, its another thing to have us all swallow that four different police officers recruit an amateur and let her solve the mystery. A detective is brought in from the big city and even she lets Hannah take the lead and do all the investigation. Just too over the top for me.
By the time the last 100 pages came around, I was finding it hard to stay with the book. I wasn't motivated to finish other than out of loyalty to the series and a personal desire to finish every book I read.
I did like the Mike/Norman/Hannah situation and was glad to see some movement in that story line. I also got a real kick out of Moise (Hannah's cat) and the mystery of the disappearing food. I actually liked that mystery better than the main murder in the novel.
I'll keep reading these since they have been so good so far, but I am hoping for better in the future. If you have never read this series, I would recommend going back and starting with the very first one. Since so much of this book is dependent upon characters, it would be really helpful to have all the previous background -- won't stand alone very well.Cream Puff Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) Overview

Plum Pudding Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) ReviewThe book starts out with a murder, and then backtracks to the day before a man was shot to a scene at The Cookie Jar. Hannah is selling cookies to the local Christmas tree lot for the holidays, and she and her partner, Lisa, are busy baking cookies, and preparing for the holidays. Hannah's Mom is wondering why her partner in the antique business has been cancelling so many social outings. Norman is helping Hannah put her first Christmas tree in the condo. Mike is worrying about some suspicions he has over local citizens at the tri-state mall. Andrea is selling houses and keeping her precocious daughter, Tracy, busy. The plot thickens when it becomes obvious that a local business owner may have been cheating several of the town's citizens. Norman is helpful, kind and sweet, and Mike shows up for handouts of food late at night. Mike's dalliances with other women are brought up by Hannah and then dismissed. Hannah continues to date both men, and I found myself wanting Norman to dump her. He deserves a woman who appreciates his care for her, and Hannah seems to be attracted to the bad boys. The end of the book brings yet another former suitor into the pictures. Sweet Holidays: The Third Samantha Sweet Mystery (Samantha Sweet Mysteries) ReviewConnie Shelton has once again written another great Sam Sweet story - just enough mystery, intrigue, romance and sugar to make it a fun read.
I saved this one to read late, late Christmas Eve, after all tinsel, packages, food and fun were over. What a nice way to relax and enjoy the wee small hours.
Can't wait for the next Sweet mystery (due maybe just before Valentine's Day, Connie?).

Fudge Cupcake Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) ReviewHannah's life is very full. Not only is she juggling the demands of running The Cookie Jar, but her brother-in-law is running for sheriff in a very tight race and she's trying to organize the recipes for the Lake Eden cookbook. One night, as she's taking the trash out after her potluck cooking class (a convenient way to test all the recipes to make sure they're right before the book goes to print), she finds the body of Sheriff Grant in the dumpster. Now Bill is suspended from work because he's a suspect, and Hannah must clear him by finding the killer before he drives the very pregnant Andrea crazy cleaning out their house. This also adds major complications to Hannah's relationship with Bill's partner Mike. Meanwhile, her mother is acting strangely, and she needs to get her cat to eat his senior cat food. And she's searching for the missing ingredient in Mrs. Koester's fudge cupcake recipe so it can make the book. Can Hannah juggle all these competing demands?
Needless to say, there's never a dull moment in this book. There are a few times when the murder investigation seems to stall briefly, but the other sub-plots take up the slack. Frankly, I hardly noticed because there is so much else happening. The mystery does progress well, with an ending I figured out a little before Hannah, but not by much. All the characters we've come to love are back, and it's definitely a wonderful visit with old friends. This book contains 10 delicious sounding recipes. (A word about the title recipe. The first edition contains an error. It should read 1 1/2 teaspoons baking POWDER not baking soda. This will be fixed in all future editions.)
Is it possible to get the warm fuzzies from a murder mystery? If so, this is the series to do it. If you like your murder served cozy, look no further then this fun series.Fudge Cupcake Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) Overview

Candy Cane Murder ReviewI am not the biggest fan of short stories. I want more content to sink my teeth into. However, this book was the exception. I loved it! Hannah was in her usual keen sleuthing mode. I liked how the second short story referred back to Joanne's story and recipes. I am especially thrilled to be introduced to Leslie Meier. Sugar Cookie Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) ReviewThis is my first book in the Hanna Swensen series and I'm not sure I will look for others.
I didn't realize what a huge genre of "cookbook mysteries" are out there! I picked up a bunch of paperbacks at a rummage sale and there were a half-dozen of these types of stories all by different authors. That said, "Sugar Cookie Murder" wasn't one of the better ones.
Since I haven't read any of the previous books in this series, I have only this book to base my opinions on and that might be unfair. However, this is supposed to be a stand-alone book.
Anyway, as several reviewers noted, the "mystery" was hardly a mystery at all. The climax was horribly disappointing -- a quick confession and bang, end of mystery. Apparently the cops did nothing but guard the doors and the detective sat in an office being cranky while Hannah and her sisters ran around and solved the "mystery". Almost all the action -- such as it was -- took place in the banquet hall and focused on describing food. Lots of food. With a few million references to how cold it gets in Minnesota and how everyone there can drive through a blizzard like it was a warm sunny day. Obviously there is a history between all the residents which, fortunately, wasn't too heavy-handed although it did get kind of confusing now and then.
I didn't particularly like the characters, either. Again, the shallowness of everyone might have been because it's part of a series and there was more character-building earlier on. But Hannah came off as a bit whiney, controlling and indecisive. She has two guys on a string -- one is too good to be true but kind of ordinary, the other is an obnoxious, self-serving cop who is apparently hot for his secretary and Hannah both making him a class-A jerk, but he's a hunk so Hannah seems to cozy up with him moreso than the other guy. But she uses the other guy whenever it suits her so she's not much better than the cop. The sisters seem two dimensional, the mother is a ditz and the rest of the cast are mere shadows on the wall.
The reason I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 (too bad sometimes you can't give 0 stars!) was because I am hoping/assuming the earlier books were better and this was just a filler book. If I run across more of Joanne Fluke's books at a rummage sale I might buy them but I'm sure I won't be spending full price -- paperback or hardcover -- for any of them.Sugar Cookie Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) Overview

Devil's Food Cake Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) ReviewReading on my new Kindle is a thrill. Reading this book was not. A long-time fan of Hannah's, this outing was a disappointment to say the least. An occasional recipe is fun, a book full is a cookbook, not a mystery. The plot had promise, the premise was good, but the word that springs to mind is lack-luster. And the number one, topmost ANNOYING thing, is the ending that doesn't end. A sales ploy for the next book? Come on, Joanne, I hope this is a Fluke and not an omen for books to come.
Grandma Knudson would have enjoyed a little more depth, and Delores deserves far more details concerning her venture into undercover work. And as for Norman and Mike, bor-ing for Mike, and SO out of charactor for Norman!!!

Cinnamon Roll Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) ReviewJoanne Fluke follows a fairly predictable model for these books- Hannah bakes, Hannah finds a body, Hannah solves the crime, Hanna solves the crime by being the only one in a semi-dangerous situation with the killer- until Mike or Norman (or Both) ride in to save her. I'm not going to completely fault the writer- she feels she's found a formula that works and she's going with it. After all,we're still buying the books, so we must LOVE them? I was on the fence about buying this book- I've been wanting resolution with the Norman/Mike triangle for several books, and I hoped (but did not truly expect) that Dr.Bev might be a form of a resolution.
The book opened up nice enough with a little intrigue in just a few pages. The mystery part was not bad, even though for most of the book I anticipated a different killer. The characters aren't bad either- they are a nice sounding group of people and definitely a "cozy". What bothers me the most of this series is that some parts Joanne Fluke just keeps rinsing/repeating. Ex. We all know Andrea can't cook. She's the fashionable, perfectly put together one. So when Hannah made a note about 'whole eggs" in her recipe and said "Andrea would have to be told to crack the eggs and then use them" (I'm paraphrasing), that bothered me a little because seriously even if you're not a "baker" this still seemed to be a common-sense thing. Of course, in the next chapter, Andrea lets us know that this did happen to her 1 time, but still.
The men. Hannah keeps dating them, but no progress with either really. Mike drops in at all hours for food and Norman can be wimpy. Hannah's own mother is making far more headway in her romantic life with Doc, than Hannah is with either man.
The books are still ok, they are semi-entertaining, and are similar to an old sweatshirt that has seen a better day- you know you should get rid of it, but it makes you feel comfortable, so you keep it.If you're looking for something light and fluffy- you've found the right series.

Lemon Meringue Pie Murder (Hannah Swensen Mysteries) ReviewHannah Swensen returns in the 4th book in this series. In this installment, Hannah jumps in to help solve a murder when a lemon meringue pie from her bakery, The Cookie Jar, is found at the crime scene. When Norman Rhodes, one of Hannah's "boyfriends", purchases a home, he does not realize that the dead body of the previous owner will be found inside. It seems that this owner, Rhonda, stopped at her old home to pick up a few last items and thought she would have one last meal there. This meal was definitely her last, as the person that met her there may have been the last to see her alive! Adding to Hannah's troubles is the fact that some of her clothes just seem too tight, and so she sets out to put herself on a diet (even while she is baking all kinds of yummy cookies!). Playing a part in this mystery is Hannah's nagging mother, Norman's mother, and Mike, the policeman who usually fights to keep Hannah out of each case but finally gives up this time. As Hannah fights to keep her life in order and her weight in check, she must find a killer before he/she strikes again!
I have enjoyed each of the Hannah Swensen mysteries and have loved the recipes that are included in each book. Each time I have read one of the books, I find myself getting hungry (not good for my waistline either!) for all of the goodies that Hannah serves. The mysteries are interesting, but as I like culinary cozies, I enjoy the books more for the food and the characters. My only complaint about this series has to be in the dialogue between characters, as they are constantly repeating each other's names. Other than that, this delightful read will leave you "hungry" for more!
The first book in this series is "The Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder". Enjoy!

The police are inclined to think so, but Hannah certainly does not. With the aide of her sister, Andrea, she sets out to find the real killer. Many suspenseful twists and turns follow as Hannah and Andrea proceed on their relentless mission to free an innocent woman. Will they succeed and find the real killer? Only in the last few chapters will you find out the answer to this riddle.
Once again, author Joanne Fluke has surpassed herself with another excellent novel. The cozy and inviting atmosphere found in the first novel continues here against the backdrop of the cruel Minnesota cold. Many delicious recipes are included so you can share the experience right along with Hannah and her friends. Her strained relationship with her mother continues as her friendship with Norman grows and her closeness to her sister Andrea deepens. The novel keeps you in suspense right up until the very end providing an exhilarating mystery ride. This is a novel not to be missed. Very highly recommended.

Buttercream Bump Off (Cupcake Bakery Mystery) ReviewThe second installment in Jenn McKinlay's Cupcake Bakery Mystery series is a delicious surprise. Back are the two best friends, Melanie Cooper and Angie Delaura. They are a modern day Lucy and Ethel (if Ethel wore miniskirts and could punch your lights out.) Melanie is the wacky can-do type who operates under the ask-for-forgiveness-later rule. When her Mom is framed for murder the duo jump into action. If you can read this book without craving (and demolishing) at least one delectable cupcake you are a better person than I (or you just skimmed.) The dialog is hysterical and the characters are charming. The plot is an engaging mystery and a romance; and, BONUS! there are cupcake recipes!!Buttercream Bump Off (Cupcake Bakery Mystery) Overview

Sprinkle with Murder (Cupcake Bakery Mystery) ReviewWho knew cupcakes were so dangerous? This fun, well-plotted mystery centers around two best friends, Melanie and Angie, who've just started a cupcake business, and are set to cater the wedding of their longtime male friend, Tate, whose fiance, fashion designer Christie, is, to put it mildly, not well-liked by almost anyone save for her fiance and one fawning assistant. When she insists on owning control over the original cupcake flavors that Fairy Tale Cupcakes is making, they almost balk, but agree...until she winds up dead, with a cupcake in her hand. This wreaks havoc on their business and Mel decides she's going to find out who the culprit is to save her business, and her reputation since rumors are swirling that she was the one with the fatal cupcake.
This is a page turner that certainly kept me guessing, and the horrors of Christie's manipulation are related with an almost gleeful detail. The author's done her homework on what it takes to run a cupcake bakery, and there's an entertaining rivalry with another shop (complete with frosting splattering!) as well as cupcake recipes at the end.
