Chow San Francisco Bay Area: 300 Affordable Places for Great Meals & Good Deals ReviewThis book is a must for anyone who lives or spends any amount of time in San Francisco. Locals and visitors alike will find it indespensible if they love to eat out but don't always want to do it on a champagne budget. This book reveals not only where the great food is in the City by the Bay (and surrounding areas,) but also addresses the pocketbook, too. It's based on the premise that the meals must not come to more than a [certain amount of money.] It covers the gamut from fine dining to taquerias to everything in between. I find the reviews to be comprehensive, realistic and often mirror exactly my impression of the dining establishment. (So it MUST be good!) ;^) The index is divided by both neighborhood and food type and is very easy to use, as the restaurants are then listed alphabetically. I keep mine in the car so that it's always easily available. I use it often. I'm also buying 10 of them as Christmas gifts. My only complaint is that the book falls apart easily.Chow San Francisco Bay Area: 300 Affordable Places for Great Meals & Good Deals Overview

The Chowhound's Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area ReviewWhether you are a tourist who wants to eat like the locals or a Bay Area native, this book has the most compact yet comprehensive list of ideas for delicious dining in a unique, humorous and easy-to-read format.
As a long time Bay Area resident, I found myself using it immediately
Things I love about the book
-It's lightweight, so I can carry it my purse
-There are tips about places I frequent that I didn't know about
-Great cross indexing. It's very easy to use.
-It doesn't have the same tired general knowledge tips
-Really amazing that not only is SF and immediate areas covered, but that the entire Bay Area is nicely represented.
It also captures the essence of Chowhound of having fun while finding something wonderful to eat.
I've traveled quite a bit and bought many guide books. This is one of the best and most useful books I own.The Chowhound's Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area Overview

L.A.'s Original Farmers Market Cookbook: Meet Me at 3rd and Fairfax ReviewImagine if you will, having the chance to sample some of the freshest and best cuisine from all over the world; a French Fondue Savoyarde, some Mexican Chilaquiles Verdes, Singapore's Mee Goreng, or some Korean Kalbi. The passport and travel tickets alone might be enough to break the bank. Unless, of course, you live in Los Angeles and want to `meet me at 3rd and Fairfax' where for 76 years this month, culinary patrons from the world over have gathered at the dozens of homegrown eateries that comprise L.A.'s Farmers Market.
Now, through the efforts of author and Food TV producer, JoAnn Cianciulli (and Bay Area food photographer Karl Petzke), Chronicle Books has assembled some of the best recipes from the legendary vendors into one book of international and domestic delights called "L.A.'s Original Farmers Market Cookbook."
Unlike most cookbooks that rely on one particularly style or a single chef's output, the Farmers Market Cookbook combines dishes for every meal - including snacks and desserts - from a veritable cornucopia of chefs, genres, styles and nationalities - all blended together to replicate what a visit through the aisles of the legendary marketplace are like in real life.
In addition to the recipes, there are the storied histories of each of the featured vendors, some of which date back to the origin of the market that now resides on the old Gilmore Oil fields and is one of L.A.'s official Historical and Cultural Landmarks (second only to Hollywood itself.) While the book serves as a great cookbook for those seeking a wide variety of casual comestibles, it also aptly describes the history of the famed location, from its origin as dairy land to its hangout status for famous names like Sinatra, James Dean, Garbo and more, to its current day adjacency to both CBS's Television City and the high-profile shopping plaza, The Grove.
If you can't make it around the world, or even out to L.A., the Farmers Market Cookbook is the next best thing to being there. Otherwise, `meet us at 3rd and Fairfax' soon. See you there!L.A.'s Original Farmers Market Cookbook: Meet Me at 3rd and Fairfax Overview

Williams-Sonoma Foods of the World: San Francisco: Authentic Recipes Celebrating the Foods of the World ReviewAs a resident of San Francisco who loves his city, I am hardly the most objective reviewer of this book, but I do think this is a worthy if rather cursory overview of the culinary treats and idiosyncratic dining experiences that make up the best of what this city has to offer to local and tourist alike. Chuck Williams has established one of the more unavoidable upscale gourmet store chains in Williams-Sonoma, and this tome is the latest in a series of cookbooks focused on the premiere food capitals of the world. The first third is actually a well-organized explanation of what makes San Francisco unique from its culinary history to the distinctive flavors currently found in its major neighborhoods. There are sections on local specialties such as artisan bread, coffee, wine, Asian produce and chocolate. The breezy but informative text is by Janet Fletcher.
The recipes actually don't start until page 79, but the 45 selections all look tasty and not overly complex to prepare. I have always had good luck with the recipes in the Williams-Sonoma catalog, and this one is proving to be no exception so far. Personally I have tried making the orecchiette with broccoli rabe; the braised chicken with tomato, pancetta and zinfandel; and the stir-fried long beans with Thai chile paste. All were hits with friends, though I would think items such as Chinese long beans may be harder to find outside the major metropolitan areas. There are even snippets of local information interspersed among the recipes. The book is also abundant in nice color photographs courtesy of Jean-Blaise Hall, though I wish the editors would have included captions so you know where some of the places are. Highly recommended for those who left their palettes in San Francisco.Williams-Sonoma Foods of the World: San Francisco: Authentic Recipes Celebrating the Foods of the World Overview

The Big Sur Bakery Cookbook: A Year in the Life of a Restaurant ReviewI understand all the rave reviews for this cookbook based on the photography and the narrative story it tells. But as a cookbook, I find it completely impractical. I bought the book based on these rave reviews and I wish one person would have been more upfront about the recipes and I would have made a more informed choice. The photographs are lovely. The narrative is interesting. The food and recipes however are impractical to replicate in my own home which is why I only gave this cookbook one star.
As an example, here is a list of key ingredients for one recipe after another in this cookbook: fresh sardines (not canned), rabbit, rose geranium leaves, rice bran oil, huckleberries, lemon verbena leaves, mulberries, rockfish, burrata, fresh mackrel, quail, foi gras, quince, ahi tuna, fresh oysters, beluga lentils, fresh squid, etc. etc.
I have nothing against this type of cooking. I'm sure the recipes are delicious. I sadly will never know because I live in the mid west in a modest sized town and just simply don't have access to these ingredients. If you have access to this type of food then this cookbook will probably work for you. These 'rarified' ingredients aren't widely available to the rest of us and I wish I had known what type of cookbook this was before wasting my money. The Big Sur Bakery Cookbook: A Year in the Life of a Restaurant Overview
