In other words, you would be given the same information, in the same format throughout. Ideally, you pay a guide to do the work for you so that you don't have to waste time going from website to website in order to gather information. For example, I would, at a minimum, expect this guide to give the tuition for each and every school at the time of publication. However, the guide provides this information here and there. It's as if the editor just didn't feel like working that hard and if they actually had to contact the school, they didn't bother. It's a satisfying fix, and I would say the first half (just like the first bite) was the best part. I can admit I was able to personally relate to a lot of those cake-nocake-cake-nocake-CAKE!!!! scenarios.
The part I didn't enjoy was the middle, where the author spent way too many pages on the wedding cake competition and its contestants. I honestly would have preferred a shorter book than the obvious filler she stuffed in--I mean, outlining the wedding couple's honeymoon and the cakes they ate on it? Entire chapters devoted to the petty dramas between bakers? Please.
She revived herself a bit in the last part, with the outline of cakes (trashy or not) around America, providing a refreshingly ironic take on the "local food" craze.

52 Loaves ReviewIf you enjoyed watching the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", then you are going to relish reading "52 Loaves". Just as the audience did not have to be Greek to laugh at the hilarious movie scenes and to empathize with the protagonist's experiences, readers do not have to bake bread, to be fully sated with this wonderful book.
For me, the most satisfying book is one that balances character, plot, setting, and theme. In "52 Loaves", all four strands are woven in a tapestry of well-written, thoughtful words.
The main "character" is the author, William Alexander. If you can recall a time in your life when either a meal or food tantalized you with its sublime taste, smell and texture, you can understand the author's dogged attempts to recreate a memorable experience with a loaf of bread. Given bread's many dynamic variables (flour, yeast, time and temperature), replicating a loaf of bread without a recipe, is intricately complicated. As the story enfolds, we laugh heartily as the author encounters one mishap after another in search for this elusive recipe, while admiring his doggedness. The single-focused character who we meet at the beginning of the book becomes introspective and philosophical at the end.
The plot holds the reader's interest as it revolves around the author's activities, his tribulations paired with triumphs, his obstacles followed by revelations. Along with the author, we learn from and enjoy meeting, among others, the miller, the bakers, the hippie, the scientist, the storeowner, and the monk. While we know intuitively that the author will eventually bake a "perfect" loaf, we read on to share in this victory. Rich in setting, the book travels from one location to the next - a myriad of fascinating places that culminate in a week's stay at a French monastery. The descriptions are precise in detail, informative in context, and lyrical in tone - a pleasing juxtaposition. Finally, like the author who learned that the perfect bread is the penultimate one, at the conclusion of the book, the reader will think about its many meanings long after the last page is read.
"52 Loaves" is quintessential story-telling. Whether you have never baked a loaf of bread, want to bake a loaf of bread, or have experienced the joys of baking your own or eating the "perfect" loaf, this is the book to read.52 Loaves Overview

The Slow Food Guide to New York City: Restaurants, Markets, Bars ReviewAs a frequent traveller to Italy, I have found the Slow Food Guide to be invaluable for restaurant recommendations throughout that entire country. The Slow Food organization has consistently provided knowledgeable reviews of places that offer traditional regional cuisine for excellent value. Now that Slow Food is expanding its scope to other cities and countries, I am happy to report that its New York guide also provides reliable reviews of some of the city's best eating establishments.
Note that, unlike Zagat, the Slow Food guide is not meant to be comprehensive. Instead, the contributors have chosen to write about a handful of some of the best restaurants for each cuisine category, ranging from cheap takeout places to famous four star establishments. Inevitably, some noteworthy restaurants have been left off of the list -- but those that have been included are highly worthy representatives of their respective cuisines.
Also, unlike Zagat, the reviews contain far more knowledgeable insights about ethnic restaurants in the city. Instead of providing entries about places that are popular but have watered-down cuisine for Western tastes, the contributors provide descriptions of outstanding and occasionally lesser-known restaurants that serve more authentic fare. In particular, the guide highlights some of the best ethnic restaurants in the outer boroughs, which are too frequently ignored by the Zagat reviewers and clientele. For example, the guide recommends Sripraphai Thai restaurant in Woodside, Queens -- and their inclusion of this relatively overlooked gem indicates that this is a guide well worth following.
In summary, the Slow Food guide is not necessarily meant to be a comprehensive survey book like Zagat's, but its focus on some of the best New York restaurants -- regardless of cost or borough -- makes this guide potentially even more valuable to New York visitors. Then, I came across this - it includes 13 of Seuss's best including all my son's favorites (Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, The Sneetches, The Grinch, If I ran the Zoo ...) All for under $25! I went ahead and purchased it. Now, every night we read a couple of stories ("Green Eggs and Ham" is always one of them) and my son loves it! The only problem I found with it is that it is too heavy to be handled by young kids (under 5) alone. But it is sturdily bound and the pages are good quality. As a long time Bay Area resident, I found myself using it immediately
Things I love about the book
-It's lightweight, so I can carry it my purse
-There are tips about places I frequent that I didn't know about
-Great cross indexing. It's very easy to use.
-It doesn't have the same tired general knowledge tips
-Really amazing that not only is SF and immediate areas covered, but that the entire Bay Area is nicely represented.
It also captures the essence of Chowhound of having fun while finding something wonderful to eat.

Talk Nerdy to Me ReviewThis book is such a riot. It is the first Nerd book that I've read, and I immediately went out and bought all the others. So far I've read Nerds like it Hot, and My Nerdy Valentine, and this one is still the funniest.
This author writes with so much humor, that you are almost laughing at every page. The secondary characters are funny. In this case, there is a kinky neighbor, who tells people she was abducted by an alien and learned other-wordly sexual techniques. At the same time all the characters are 'normal' in the sense that they have normal human faults and insecurities. That's part of what makes the series so enjoyable - the very humanness of the characters.
The premise of the story is that there is this beautiful model, who is also a genius at aerodynamics, who gets into a little bit of trouble with her advanced design on a hovercraft. The dichotomy between her being so gorgeous, and so nerdy at the same time was wonderful. Highly recommended. I've never laughed so much reading a romance novel.Talk Nerdy to Me Overview

Culinary Careers For Dummies ReviewIf you're cooking up a new career, CULINARY CAREERS FOR DUMMIES is a good, if basic, place to start. If you already know quite a bit about the industry, maybe not. It's a practical overview, focusing first on various jobs in the trade. First instance, you will learn that, between 2008 and 2018, jobs for cooks in full-service restaurants are expected to rise by 8%, in cafeterias and institutions by 10%, and in other areas by 16%. People have to eat, after all, and people with little time on their hands tend to eat out. This is not to mention those captive audiences who HAVE to eat "in," not "out" -- students, hospital staff, and prisoners (to name just a few).
Most prospective employees of the trade think of restaurants, naturally, but this book spells out the many other avenues open to those entering the culinary industry. For instance, there are hotels and resorts; pastry shops and bakeries; catering companies; spas; private households; educational institutions; hospitals, nursing homes and retirement homes; cruise ships; airlines; correctional centers; military bases and schools; test kitchens, development kitchens, and commissary kitchens; wineries and breweries; grocery and specialty food stores; restaurant supply distributors; and public relations and marketing firms. So much for only sending your resumes to Chilis, Applebees, and Outback!
While the book acknowledges the benefits (for some) of on-the-job training, it also surveys the culinary school scene. It considers, too, the fact that not all cooks care to make the same foods. Thus, the section on specialties looks at becoming a pastry chef or baker, a personal chef (no, you don't get to choose your celebrity), even a mixologist (mixing drinks is apparently a branch of "cooking").
There's even nuts (and, as required by law, bolts) to be found. Here is advice on writing a resume, there advice on interviewing techniques. Charts are even provided with expected pay scales for various food-related occupations (don't get your hopes up: a chef or head cook has a salary range of $22,120 to $66,680 with a median salary of $38,770).
Overall, it's informative in a "breadth, not depth" kind of way. Looking for an overview of the industry? I think this will serve (food humor for you). Looking for some real insider info? You might keep clicking. It's a big bookstore.Culinary Careers For Dummies Overview

She owns a hip boutique and has an uncanny knack for determining a couples' potential for staying together based on the cake that they choose. Her best friend after all chose the wrong cake and ultimately the wrong groom. When her other close friend makes a near disastrous decision, it is up to Lauren to rescue her from making the same mistake.
Enter ex-boyfriend Neil. He and his fiance show up at her boutique and he chooses the cake that Lauren has already determined will be her cake. Did she make a mistake eight years ago when she sent Neil packing? Despite being in the early throes of a new relationship with marriage-shy divorce lawyer Charlie (who she has so much in common with, including clients), Lauren entertains the idea of pursuing a relationship with Neil before he ties the knot. At the same time, she is trying to launch a wedding cake book, set her friend Paige up with a more appropriate guy, deal with a temperamental head cook, and determine if happily ever after means marriage.

Seriously Serendipity (A Holiday Romantic Comedy) (Christmas in Miller's Village) ReviewSanta Claus has come to town, and he's moving in on Camille's grandma. He's also brought along his grandson, and once he and Camille meet sparks fly. Not an issue if they weren't ultimately made to work together to save Santa's bakery.
There's lots of slapstick, lots of snark, and lots of funny. I'll just say I agree with others here and say it's cute. Go girl power.
That being said, I'm a huge fan of Shopaholic and Bitter is the New Black, so I'm all about strong personalities and quirk in my main characters. Not everyone is. Just be forewarned.

Issues of global warming, health care reform, a strangled economy, and the latest celebrity shenanigans fill our media outlets and our heads until they just about burst. It is all too much to bear. No wonder we seek solace in the tiny triumphs of life: in our own small successes and in the personal interactions, the soothing sights, the tempting tastes, and the sensational smells we find in the world around us.
Neil Pasricha is the author of the award-winning blog, "1000 Awesome Things." His online success translates well into the format of this book, which outlines 200 of those Awesome Things. Things like "That one really good pen that never gets lost;" "The sound of ice cubes cracking in a drink;" "Licking the batter off the beaters of a cake mixer;" "The smell and sound of a campfire;" and "That friendly nod between strangers out doing the same thing." In these pages you'll also learn the most successful strategies for trick-or-treating and for making the most of an all-you-can-eat buffet. You'll even learn exactly what functions are attached to your colon. But this is not a book of mere lists. Mr. Pasricha provides an explanation for each one, and some of those pieces are several pages in length. His observations are spot-on, and his writing style is friendly and funny. This is an entertaining and feel-good read.
I had to wait until page 342 to find my most favorite Awesome Thing: Snow days. The author breaks this phenomenon into three types: The Pre-Planned Snow Day, The High-Probability Snow Day, and The Surprise Snow Day. But Neil, there's a fourth one to consider, and that's the "We're already here. Will we get enough snow for them to send us home early?" kind. That one may be the most frustrating of all. When the crucial announcement comes, that joyful event becomes yet another (albeit, shortened) Awesome Thing. Assuming you can make it home safely in the storm.
"The Book of Awesome" is the kind of paperback that you can scan through quickly. You can catch the headlines and say "Yes!" to particular ones. Or you can take a single lovely, rainy weekend to devour this volume from cover to cover. Keep it on your bedside table or coffee table for a pick-me-up. Read passages aloud to a living room full of friends, and your group will come up with even more possibilities. You don't have to agree with all of the entries. ("Using all the different shampoos and soaps in someone else's shower" didn't resonate with me, and neither did "Neighbors with pools.") Just keep turning pages, and it won't be too long before you find several more Awesome Things that you can relate to. And you will probably find yourself smiling, nodding, and laughing out loud.
Once you get into this mode, you may pay closer attention to those magic moments in your own life. Like sliding a key perfectly into a lock in the dark, without fumbling and without turning on the light. Watching a squirrel figure out how to invade a rodent-proof bird feeder. The smell of tea that wafts up when you unwrap a brand-new box of it. It's all good ... and Awesome. Thanks, Neil. Have a Crumby Book: A Collection of Wit and Whimsy from Cincinnati's Favorite Bakery ReviewWhat a deliciously delightful novelty of a book! WARNING: DO NOT read this book when you are hungry. I often found myself drooling on the pages of photographs of popular billboards depicting some of Busken Bakery's finest baked goods. Their appearance is absolutely mouthwatering! I do wish that I lived much closer to Cincinnati, now. I also wish that I could have had the pleasure of seeing some of these billboards in my travels; but alas, I have not.
There is just enough history of the Busken Bakery and its founders to familiarize yourself with the chain and give you a little background on the baking industry. It was interesting and educational. For instance, I know with 100% certainty that I could never be a baker, since I learned that they get up to go to work at 2:00 a.m.
But, again, the real treat here are the photos depicting the clever advertising slogans full of puns; and most importantly, the delectable baked goods themselves! I'm definitely ready for a trip to Cincinnati now. Oh, that won't be necessary--they have a website that offers shipping of their products.
I'm glad I received this colorful book with the funny name as part of the Goodreads Early Reads program; since I don't think I would otherwise have discovered it. It was a pleasant, quick read and should be especially delightful to those lucky people who have grown up with the Busken Bakery as part of their life.
