Brownie Points: Seven Steps to Success for Woman Entrepreneurs from One Who Made It ReviewA wonderful book for women (and men) entrepreneurs who have dreams of being their own boss and want to read about a woman's story of turning her dream into reality. Quite a fun read! Much of what is said in this book is material I cover during my face-to-face sessions as a volunteer SCORE counselor.
If you are lucky enough to get a copy of this book, then you will learn about the importance of the following if you want to be self-employed and your own boss:
1. The need to get organized.
2. The need to get your finances in order.
3. The need to research your business idea and write a business plan.
4. The need to systematize your business' processes.
5. The need to continually improve your business' marketing program.
I particularly enjoyed the discussion of the importance of intellectual property concepts and why one should consider created a tradename, trademarks and possible patents. There was valuable insight offered about the significance of trade secrets. And don't forget how much mentors can help, too.
I also liked the insight provided regarding the use of temp workers exclusively. That seems to be a growing trend in America today. And the message that not having a storefront with a reasonable profit is better than having a strorefront with minimal profit. One should be in business to make money - not just put on a show of being self-employed.
I would have liked the book better if copyrights had also been mentioned. And I was kind of surprised the author said she personally used Quicken instead of QuickBooks. If she really does use Quicken to keep her business' books, then it is smaller than I envisioned it. It was a compelte waste of [money]. If you have gone out to eat more than one time, you already know 90% of this book. The book seems to have little insight into the detailed aspects of starting and running a restaurant and seems to only brush the surface of important issues.
The most valuable information in this book gives you a guideline as to what percent of your income should go to various restaurant operations.

My grandfather built the soddy (a house made of blocks of prairie sod) that my mother was born in on the Colorado plains. The spirit of the people who carved out a living on those plains could best be described as tenacious as a bulldog. And here I thought that Sloppy Joes were named after my uncle Joe Masterson. Ohh well I like Ms. Shelnutt's version better since I had my first one after moving to Denver. Her depiction of the people in her family make them recognizable as all of those who have fought to overcome life's boulders. Short Tails And Treats From Three Dog Bakery ReviewThis book is a quick read that held my interest from beginning to end. It's funny and has it's own unique charm. More importantly, however, is the business angle that is interwoven throughout the "tale" (the author's pun, not mine!). This is the story of two guys and their three dogs who started a company on a shoestring and have grown it to a good-sized company. I bought a second copy to give to my brother, as inspiration, who is now starting his third entrepreneurial endeavor. I can't think of a reason why readers and their doggies would not immenseley enjoy this book. I rank this book 5 stars.Short Tails And Treats From Three Dog Bakery Overview

One of most important aspects are their estimates of the funds needed. Of course, the exact amounts are going to vary from each person, but this book does a great job of giving you idea of "ballpark" numbers. A lot of the book won't apply to everyone since it breaks down the different types of restaurant but like I mentioned earlier, it's a good starting point. I personally found it to be very useful and brings of very good tips and insight on some of the differences between a good and bad restaurant.
