Start and Run a Coffee Bar (Start & Run ...) ReviewWe are opening a coffee house in 4 months and, needless to say, I have been reading and researching tons of books. Not just on the coffee world, but on insuring a small business as well as other legal insights. This book has been a HUGE resource for our venture. It is an easy read, meaning, it doesn't numb your mind for countless pages discussing, say, insurance. Let me add that it does talk about insurance, and I thank the authors for that. They explain complicated business talk with clear and consise examples. They also tend to weigh situations against other situations. For example, when drawing up the plans, they give you three ways of doing it (yourself, a draftsman, and an architect) and explain the pros and cons of each. This is consistent throughout the book and they go on to explain why or why not certain things work. They discuss marketing, staffing and the interview process, equipment tips, design layout, decor, etc. This is obviously written from the stand point of people who have been there. They cover all the bases about getting your shop up and running while touching on some potential pitfalls and how to avoid them. And if you get in a bind, they discuss how to get out of it. My highlighter has gotten a workout and I am passing this on to my co-owners to read. I am grateful to have found this book and only wish I had found it sooner to save money on the previous "coffee house" books I have purchased. This book exceeded my expectations as it went beyond the basics and truly is the only book you'll ever need. I was impressed to see that they covered LLC's, C corporations, and, S corporations...where people can't sue and go after your homes, bank accounts, personal assets, etc. Our attorney recomended an LLC for our type of operation and I was relieved to see that this book brought the topic up. Thanks to the authors for being the most complete work out there (in my opinion) on starting your business THE RIGHT WAY from the start.Start and Run a Coffee Bar (Start & Run ...) Overview

Mr. Hall has done a remarkable job to take a complex subject and break down into easily understood advcie without getting bogged down into cliches or pie-in-the-sky hyperbole.
I have searched far and wide and have found three terrific volumes, but this one is the best of the three and is the only one available on Kindle. Note that I once had a bakery in which one of my signature products was franchised in Oregon using the moniker Billy Bob's Pot Pies. Although the franchise effort was ill-fated, as vice president of the corporation, I learned a good deal along the way.
I also learned why, these days, beginning franchises is all but dead unless you have really deep pockets. I also learned why trying to breaking into supermarkets is even deader than franchising.
Thus, Sell Your Specialty Food is my pick for food producers hoping to break into wholesale food marketing in any format, but readers and researchers also should read Selling My Food To supermarkets; Kitchen To Market; Gourmet To Go - C. It was a compelte waste of [money]. If you have gone out to eat more than one time, you already know 90% of this book. The book seems to have little insight into the detailed aspects of starting and running a restaurant and seems to only brush the surface of important issues.
The most valuable information in this book gives you a guideline as to what percent of your income should go to various restaurant operations.

For someone like me who never went to a culinary school where food management is taught extensively, I thought that Mr Bathie answered some of my very basic questions of lay out and process management. It's a highly instructive book for someone, like me, who has no professional background in baking. The writing is clear and concise and layman languange is used extensively through out the book. As Mr Bathie was a consultant for most of Asia and African countries, he laid to rest some of my uncertainty of the operations of a bakery. The book includes some basic layout configurations of certain types of bakery and also explains briefly uses of machineries for semi or fully automated bakeries. Brown is an excellent choice for anyone thinking about opening up their very own bakery. It presents a number of things to consider. From weighing the pros and cons of different bakery locations to selecting a menu and from possibly serving meals, coffee, and ice cream to deciding to buy or lease baking equipment, the authors of this book gave me a plenty to think about before I dive into the food industry. It is a great basic resource for anyone looking to own their own food industry business.
In addition to bringing up several points to consider, the authors also direct readers to a number of helpful resources and they guide readers to seek out individualized information from local sources, such as the local health department, fire department, and more.
I found the chapters on hiring the staff and getting set up with suppliers to be the most helpful. Sometimes when you are new to an industry it can be hard to know where to start. Thanks to "How to Create a Financially Successful Bakery" I now know what needs to get done.
The accompanying CD-ROM is also a great resource. On it are a number of sample business plans and related Microsoft Word documents that anyone can alter and use for their own start up business.
