Eating St. Louis: The Gateway City's Unique Food Culture ReviewThis book stirs up memories.
Last Saturday evening, I got home from a tiring trip around 9 o'clock, and the only thing I wanted to do was get into bed. But there was a package waiting on my doorstep. Inside was "Eating St. Louis," and I was up until after midnight leafing through this entertaining book, remembering a lot of great meals and, more important, the people and places that served them.
Of course, it helps when your recollections of St. Louis restaurants go back to the '40s, when my Mom and Dad took me to Medart's, The Hill and the Mayfair's dining room on each of our annual vacation trips to the big city. It also helps if you were living there when Gaslight Square was still going strong and later on when all those intriguing shoestring restaurants started popping up on Euclid and in the Loop. But anyone who has spent much time at all in St. Louis will have fun recalling the eating places, food markets and drinking establishments that turn up in this book.
I don't want to make it sound as if "Eating St. Louis" is fixated on the past. Pat Corrigan gives equal time to the current restaurant scene, and I was interested to find out how much it has grown in the ten years I've been gone from town. This book would be a useful guide for anyone planning a trip to St. Louis and hoping for some great meals -- or for folks who already live there and want to expand their dining-out repertoire. Some of those places on Lafayette Square sound especially tempting.
As you can tell from the above, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I've known its author since the days we worked together at the Post-Dispatch, and I have read several of her many books. "Eating St. Louis" is now my favorite...though the one about the Zoo is still right up there.Eating St. Louis: The Gateway City's Unique Food Culture Overview

Eat This: 1,001 Things to Eat Before You Diet Review...and he was hungry, he very well might have written this charming book. A celebration of that spot in town that only the locals know about, this book is a light footed tour through the places that will never be included in the Michelin guide, but should not be missed at all costs.
Written with a great eye (and ear, nose, and tongue) for detail, lovers of "real food" everywhere will find this book a very satisfying read. Finally, a food book that understands that a super omelet or a perfect pizza is just as important to understanding great food as a fancy 3-star meal.Eat This: 1,001 Things to Eat Before You Diet Overview

Running a Restaurant For Dummies ReviewMy Mom ordered this book for me, as I was thinking of owning my own place. I have been in the restaurant business for several years, as a worker, and as a cook, and as a store manager. I thought I knew pretty much all I needed to know, but after reading this book, I am amazed at just how much MORE I needed to learn! This book has given me much more insight to more ways of obtainning the funds for starting out, and all the differrent things needed to know for employee hiring, inventory, money managment, and even how to find the best location! The book is also very true and realistic as to the difficulties occurred along the way to owning, and running a sucessful business. Thanks a lot "Books for Dummies" people for getting this book on the market. I know it will help a lot of folks who are thinking about opening their own restaurant. I am ready and anxious to get going on the road to owning my own pizza restaurant! Look for my place, SOON!

The Essential Gluten-Free Restaurant Guide ReviewI was so impressed with the glowing reviews of this volume that I ordered a copy. The restaurants are listed alphabetically by name (instead of alphabetically by city) which makes it almost impossible to find a restaurant in any city you happen to be in, unless you're willing to read the entire chapter. 95% of the restaurants in this book are described as having "no gluten-free menu." The author admits that neither he nor his editor made any attempt to verify information listed in the book, going so far as to print, repeatedly, that the restaurant's chef or owner, "reports" that their menu includes gluten-free offerings(!) As a celiac patient who is on the road 200+ days a year, this book allowed me to locate less than thirty restaurants and bakeries, nationwide, that actually maintain a gluten-free kitchen, let alone a gluten-free menu. Nosh New York: The Food Lover's Guide to New York City's Most Delicious Neighborhoods ReviewIf you are interested in exploring New York's vibrant, delicious underbelly, and are willing to venture deep into the boroughs to experience the many cultures of this great city, this book is a good place to start.
I thank the author for getting me into neighborhoods that I might not have otherwise ventured into. I have used it to explore about a dozen locations in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. You are pretty much guaranteed an interesting afternoon if you follow one of these walks, in spite of the book's many weaknesses.
The organization of information around neighborhoods is a good starting point, but beyond that the infomation is not presented in a way that is easy to follow on your feet. Yes there are maps, but the maps do not delineate the routes of the walks nor do they show any of the places mentioned in the text. The text gives addresses of restaurant and shops but rarely gives cross-streets. A little more information on the maps that visually shows the route of the walks and location of the points of interests would have made a huge difference here.
The book is bulky and just not well designed for walking tours. It is very difficult to find your way walking while trying to keep your place in a page of text. And besides the weaknesses in design, many of the points of interest are inaccurate or outdated. It just seems like the book was put together very quickly and cheaply. It is obvious that some neighborhoods were not researched very extensively when the author mentions that a restaurant looked interesting but she did not try it on her [single] trip to the neighborhood.
Overall, I do recommend this book simply because I know of no other guide like it for NYC. But use it just to put yourself in the right neighborhood, don't waste too much time searching for specific places listed here. Laura Taxel gives exhaustive commentary on a huge variety of restaurants, providing helpful reference points as to general cost, atmosphere and location. We found several of our very favorite restaurants thanks to her - it's a shame she wasn't interviewed when Anthony Bourdain filmed an episode of No Reservations here, because she's a true insider with an adventurous palate. It was a compelte waste of [money]. If you have gone out to eat more than one time, you already know 90% of this book. The book seems to have little insight into the detailed aspects of starting and running a restaurant and seems to only brush the surface of important issues.
The most valuable information in this book gives you a guideline as to what percent of your income should go to various restaurant operations.
