Heaping Spoonful ReviewHeaping Spoonful, a first novel by magazine columnist and blog queen Shauna Glenn, is surprisingly funny despite its dark premise.
The story opens with the main character, Claire Hamilton, who has lost her husband to cancer, struggling emotionally in her role as a 30-something widow with two kids and a small business. Her rage erupts in the first scene as she flings a rock into the window of a car that came too close while she jogged. The humor catches up when the driver of the car turns out too be her little sister's new boyfriend and Claire's ex-high-school principal father makes her pay for the window.
Glenn does an amazing job of putting the reader into Claire's roller coaster emotions. The reader feels the boiling anger that keeps Claire from being able to move on in her life emotionally, but is also able to enjoy the often darkly humorous as well as the lovely moments along with Claire. When Claire is scolded by her well-meaning father, the reader suddenly feels like a truant teenager right along with Claire. When Claire's son sleeps in his father's closet on a pile of sweatshirts, the reader's heart aches with Claire.
Claire's mother, an only occasionally lucid woman with Alzheimer's, is touchingly depicted. Her old-fashioned Southern charm comes through during her lucid moments, and her role in helping Claire on her emotional recovery are seamless.
Glenn's characters are very strong, fairly flawed and therefore, incredibly lovable. In particular, Claire's sister, Lucy, is a gem. Glenn's portrayal of the irreverent and irresponsible man-crazy but loving Lucy is wonderful. The unshakable bond of sisters who support and yet still exasperate each other shines through their interactions. Even less central characters leave a big impact. Case in point, Mrs. Sugarman, the well-meaning elderly socialite who anonymously helps put Claire's bakery on the map and then plays cupid as well. Similarly, Claire's restaurant manager, Ben, manages to creep stealthily into the reader's heart as his quiet strength and business skill joins with Lucy's enthusiasm to take Claire's neighborhood bakery to the next level.
As a mother, Claire's interactions with her young children as they too attempt to cope with the reality of their altered existence and their Mother's unhappiness makes the story all the more appealing to parents. The reality of being left entirely alone in what one expected to be the partnership of parenting and having to start all over again is a hidden fear in many of us parents. Glenn manages to avoid the cliché of a moral and asexual widow and instead gives us a very real, desperately hurt and yet still sexual being who is trying to find her way.
Claire's attempts to break back into dating and sex are comically bungled, and leave her even more confused and emotionally troubled. From torrid ill-planned sex with a completely inappropriate man to the perfectly planned but badly executed relationship with a near perfect man, Claire can't seem to get it right. It is only when Claire finally gets what she thinks she really wants, that she realizes what she really needs. The surprising twist at the end was quirky and unexpected, but it will leave the reader feeling almost giddy, albeit in a "...and they lived happily ever after" sort of way.
Each of the characters lend their own form of support to the seemingly fraying fabric of Claire's life. As the story comes to a close, the underlying theme of the importance of friends and family is clear. Any reader who has survived a dark or difficult patch will recognize that regardless of our individual strength, it is essential to have loved ones to prop us up, hold us close, and ultimately kick us in the pants when we most need it.
All in all, Heaping Spoonful is a moving and engaging story, full of honest, funny, and tender moments. You will enjoy the ride.Heaping Spoonful Overview

Fiscal Pear & Shimmer in The Call of River Whale ReviewIn this adorable read we meet our two very interesting main characters, Fiscal Pear, who is of course a pear, but one who has grown arms and legs, and Shimmer, a lightning bug. Sounds like a strange duo? Hold on you haven't heard anything yet.
As we begin the story we are told of a little village that has several bakeries, The Bakery of Apples, The Bakery of Blueberries, the Bakery of Cherries, the Bakery of Peaches, and the Bakery of Pears. Everyday they make delicious bake good for the villagers, but there is one problem. The evil owner of the Bakery of Pears is not happy when all of her customers pass her by for the other Bakeries. What will this evil baker do?
She decides that something must be done and she gets in touch with the very evil, Butt Rott Root. The name alone should send shivers down your spine. This evil slimy thing teams up with, Cutter, his name describes him quite well, and devises a plan, that includes kidnapping Fiscal Pear, to put all the other Bakeries out of business. Now the adventure beings.
I have to say that our author has let her imagination go wild in this wonderful book, and the reader will be pulled into her world of fantasy. The storyline is quick moving, sure to keep any readers attention, and the characters are both good and evil, endearing and frightening. There is a hint of mystery as the story moves along, as all of your questions on just why Fiscal Pear has arms and legs, and what his purpose is in the world is is not answered, at least not in this book. Good touch. There is adventure, friendship, excitement all merging with just the right mix to make one enjoyable read.
I loved this book. It is definitely different, imaginative, and one that will hold your attention from beginning to end. Great book! Highly recommended.Fiscal Pear & Shimmer in The Call of River Whale Overview

Pie ReviewPolly Portman owned a pie shop called --- what else? --- "Pie" in the very small town of Ipswitch, Pennsylvania. Alice spent many happy hours with her Aunt Polly at the shop, keeping her company, being an extra pair of hands, and learning a lot about the art and science of pie making in the process. What was most unusual about the shop was that Polly never charged for her pies. She just could not bring herself to accept money for doing what she loved to do --- bake delicious pies and give them away to anyone who wanted one. Fresh fruit, cartons of eggs, bags of flour, and other pie ingredients mysteriously appeared each morning on Polly's doorstep, and those gifts were turned into wonderful pies with crusts that were amazingly delicious.
A reporter for the local newspaper wrote an article about Polly and her pies. When the Associated Press printed the story, Polly and her pies became famous overnight, and folks came from all over the country for the delectable treats. All the local pie bakers wanted to know the recipe for Polly's pie crust, which had won her many, many awards, called Blueberries, but that recipe was the one and only thing that Polly refused to share.
When Polly quietly died in her sleep, the residents of Ipswitch were saddened to lose such a good friend. No one was sadder than Alice, who dearly loved her aunt. In her will, Polly actually left her secret pie crust recipe to her very huge and very unfriendly white cat, Lardo. And she left Lardo to Alice.
Confusion reigned, and it turned the little town upside down. Someone broke into the pie shop and vandalized it while searching for the recipe. The recipe simply had to be somewhere. How could a cat own a pie crust recipe? People even wondered if it was written on Lardo's huge belly. Alice's father was highly allergic to cats, and Alice's mother was threatening to take Lardo to the pound. Then Lardo disappeared, and Alice feared he had been catnapped. The little tourist industry that had grown up around Polly's famous pies was losing business since Polly was gone and the shop was shuttered. Now just about every woman in town was baking pies, hoping to finally have a chance to win the coveted Blueberry medal that Polly had easily won 13 years in a row.
This mystery moves along fairly quickly, and the book is filled with interesting characters like the bodybuilding spinster principal of Alice's school, the publicity-driven mayor, and Charlie, Alice's inquisitive friend who wants to help her solve the mystery. In addition to being an entertaining story, each chapter begins with the recipe of a delicious pie, from buttermilk to raspberry peanut butter and many others. Some lucky readers who are pie lovers may be able to convince a mother, grandmother, or kindly aunt to bake a pie using one of Polly's recipes. But be advised that the pie crust recipe is not included.

Henry's Sisters ReviewEven though the Bommarito sister's, Isabelle, Janie and Cecelia are close emotionally, they've all moved away from Trillium River, except for Cecelia. That is until they receive one of their mothers infamous pink notes beckoning them home. She's having surgery and needs the girls to come home and take care of their grandmother and mentally challenged brother, as well as run the family bakery. Each sister has her reasons for not wanting to return home. But the one reason they all have in common is the very reason they are asked to return - their mother River. River is, well, a bitch. She is cruel and mean and spiteful. No one wants to be around her. But the women all realize that while they may not want to help their mother, their brother and grandmother need them.
Isabelle (Cecelia's fraternal twin) lives a lonely, dark, depressing, self destructive lifestyle. Well known for her award winning photographs, she doesn't let anyone "in". Living a life full of traveling to third world countries, drinking Kahlua for breakfast, and hanging out her loft window naked (who cares if the people in the other building can see), she is afraid to commit and spends her nights with one night stands. One of which may just might get her killed.
Janie is a famous mystery author who leads a life alone on her houseboat. She hates going out and will only do so when necessary. She also has OCD and her rituals are very important to her. When Isabelle comes to discuss the pink letter from their mother, she forces her to walk out and come back in because she did not have a smile on her face when she came in the first time. Sweet, loving, quiet Janie spends her day thinking of the most gruesome ways in which to kill people in her books. Ideas that fill her head day and night. Janie is afraid that if she returns home to the harshness of her mothers tongue she will further retreat into her self as opposed to the centered calm self she is while on her houseboat. And what happens when poor frumpy Janie faces the potential of falling in love?
Cecelia is a bitter, harsh kindergarten teacher who has remained close to the family home to help care for her family. She also is not even close to being afraid of speaking her mind. Often hitting below the belt with the venom she spews. She's extremely overweight as she continually shoves food in her mouth to compensate for the hurt she is feeling. The hurt from a father that left them when they were young, and the hurt of a ass of a husband who is cheating on her with a bimbo. She also has two beautiful daughters. One who spends each month "trying on" different religions, and one who is so unsure of her self, pulls her hair out a strand at a time.
Henry is beautiful. While he is mentally challenged, he doesn't have a care in the world. He loves the work he does at the bakery, the shelter and the church. He is the light of his sisters lives. They will, and have, fought for him. Both physically and emotionally. There is nothing they wouldn't do for them.
The Bommarito sisters, along with their brother Henry, had harsh childhoods. From their Vietnam vet father leaving them to their mother struggling to keep them in food by stripping, that is when she wasn't in bed with her depression. The girls ended up helping keep the family afloat by baking during these times. Although it was just never enough. Several times they were placed in foster care, providing them the first sense of stability they've had in a long time while at the same time causing one of them an extreme amount of pain.
Will coming home to Trillium River be the wake up call that this family needs? Will they be able to finally deal with the trauma's of their lives and finally find peace and happiness? Will they once and for all get the answers that they've unknowingly been searching for? But just when things seem as if they are finally turning around they get the most crushing, heart breaking news they could ever get. They are faced with something that they are not willing to deal with and could very well destroy any of the progress that they've made. It is now time for them to put everything else aside and come together as a family.
A beautifully written tale of one families struggles and triumphs. Of how they overcome adversity and figure out a way to move on with their lives. Of how to love and trust again. Of forgiveness and family. Full of laugh out loud moments and heartbreaking scenes, scenes that will have you crying as you read them, Henry's Sisters is one story that you will regret not reading.Henry's Sisters Overview

Anna Mae decides to write her sister-in-law Kathryn to see if she can help arrange for her to visit home. Despite knowing the problems such a visit would cause with Anna's father & her own husband, Kathryn believes it is God's will that the family should reconcile. A trip is arranged.
The story of the trip is well told . It is full of ups and downs and various twists and turns. I enjoyed the strong characters and the scenes of an Amish Christmas. I thought that how the characters dealt with one another, their families' problems and their faith was very inspiring.

A Promise of Hope: A Novel (Kauffman Amish Bakery Series) ReviewI read Amy Clipston's first book in the Kauffman Amish Bakery,A Gift of Grace: A Novel (Kauffman Amish Bakery Series) and loved it. When I was given the oppertunity to read an advanced copy of the book not only was I honored, but excited to see what was going on with the Kauffman Family.
I certainly suggest picking up a copy of ' A Gift of Grace' by Amy Clipston, but if you haven't read it, no worries, you can absolutely pick right up with this book.
Set in Bird-In-Hand, PA, the main character, Sarah, is a first time expectant mother who is greiving over the tragic loss of her husband. Sarah moves back in with her parents who are trying their best to love and support their greiving daughter, reassuring her that people will help her take care of her babies. Sarah is overwhelmed with greif and sadness. While working in the family bakery she meets a man who has come to Bird-In-Hand to learn more about her husband's death. This man, Luke, claims to be a realitive. Sarah learns many things, some quite troubling, about her husband's past that she never knew, but she also learns quite a bit about herself as well.
You'll laugh, you'll cry and you'll definitely fall in love with the hero of the story, as I did. A MUST READ for anyone who is a fan of Amish Fiction. If you like Wanda Brunstetter and Beverly Lewis, well the Amy Clipston should be a new favorite author of yours as well!
